'.,¸¸,.' Year '.,¸¸,.'

Freshman is the start of your journey into ASCII, and will be your basic
beginnings. You will learn about the simple parts of ASCII, but once you've
shown you can do all of this, you will be promoted to Sophomore.

In Freshman year you will learn:
· Lesson 1. Basic Aligned Shapeš
· Lesson 2. Basic Aligned Angles
· Lesson 3. Basic Aligned Contrasting
· Lesson 4. Basic Unalign. Shapeš
· Lesson 5. Basic Unalign. Angles
· Lesson 6. Basic Unalign. Contrasting
· Lesson 7: Censor Killing
· Lesson 8: All aligned alt codes

Starting off:
All of your work should be in either Notepad or Wordpad, and the font should
be Verdana Size 10. When you have done this you can post your art straight to
the forums without needing fixes.
These are a few of the aligned characters:

Lesson 1: Basic Aligned Shapes.

Aligned is simple, and can easily make many shapes. Let's start off with the
simplest, a square/rectangle. You should just start by putting in any amount of $'s.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

And this is your top line. Now, you can just copy and paste that a few times
to make a square. Well done!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Now you can hollow it out, shade it, do whatever! It's really that easy.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$_$___________$_$
$____$_____$____$
$_______$_______$
$____$_____$____$
$_$___________$_$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Triangles-
These are a bit harder, but you'll get them eventually First, make the bast of
your triangle:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Add above it, taking a "$" off each side.
_$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$_
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Continue doing this until you get a triangle by reaching a point.
________$________
_______$$$_______
______$$$$$______
_____$$$$$$$_____
____$$$$$$$$$____
___$$$$$$$$$$$___
__$$$$$$$$$$$$$__
_$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$_
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Yay! Well done!
Circles-
Circles are much harder than the previous shapes, but are good for practicing
curves. Start by making your first line, a reasonable length. I did 8

(c)
__$$$$$$__
(c)
Then add a second, adding two "$"es to each side:
___$$$$$___
_$$$$$$$$$_
Add another line so it curves a bit:
(c)
___$$$$$___
_$$$$$$$$$_
$$$$$$$$$$$
(c)
Then it would be best to add that line again, to maintain the curve of the circle.
___$$$$$___
_$$$$$$$$$_
$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$
... and curve it back in at the bottom.
___$$$$$___
_$$$$$$$$$_
$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$
_$$$$$$$$$_
___$$$$$___
Not really a circle? Make it bigger or even add an extra line or two to make it
more of a rounded shape.
____$$$$$$$____
__$$$$$$$$$$$__
_$$$$$$$$$$$$$_
_$$$$$$$$$$$$$_
__$$$$$$$$$$$__
____$$$$$$$____
Add whatever is necessary.

Lesson 3: Basic Aligned Contrasting
Contrasting is where you use different characters of different brightnesses to
make something darker or lighter. You will not learn about shading in Freshman
though, this is simpler.

Say you have a cube:
____$$$$$$$$
___$______$$
__$______$_$
_$______$__$
$$$$$$$$___$
$______$___$
$______$__$
$______$_$
$______$$
$$$$$$$$
Not all sides are the same shade, right? That's where contrasting comes in. Use
characters of different brightness to show where the light is coming from.

. . . . . .v Brightest
____$$$$$$$$
___$$$$$$$$$
__$$$$$$$$_$
_$$$$$$$$__$ 1~- Darkest
$$$$$$$$___$
$00000$___$
$00000$__$
$00000$_$
$00000$$
$$$$$$$
. . . ^ Darker
But remember that on Notepad the brightness is opposite of forums! Try to
imagine it as a "dark light source" where is makes the cube darker on Notepad.

Lesson 4: Basic Unaligned Shapes
A square. Too easy
Start off with underscores to make the top of the square.
______________
Now add vertical lines to make the sides of the square:
.____________
|……………………|
|……………………|
|……………………|
|……………………|
|……………………|
Now finish it off with overscores (ALT+0175)
.____________
|……………………|
|……………………|
|……………………|
|……………………|
|……………………|
.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Easy, but could be better. You could add a dot before the under- and overscores
to make it look better.
.____________
|…………………….|
|…………………….|
|…………………….|
|…………………….|
|…………………….|
.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Triangles-
I bit harder, but much easier than a circle Start by finding a good angle, I'll
use ¸/'. Make the base with over scores and build up the triangle.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
¸/'……………………'\¸
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
..¸/'………………'\¸
¸/'……………………'\¸

Lesson 6: Basic Unaligned Contrasting
Say you have something which is meant to have two different, brighter and
darker colours. How do you contrast them? Well, the best characters to use
are spaces, periods, colons and semicolons.
( ) . : ;
Let's say this is your picture:

......¸‹´’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’¸‹|
.¸‹´............¸‹´...|
|’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’|.......|
|...............|.......|
|...............|.......|
|...............|...¸‹´
|,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|‹´

And you want to contrast the different brightnesses of the colours. You may
start by filling one section (the brightest) with semi colons.

......¸‹´’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’¸‹|
.¸‹´............¸‹´;;|
|’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’|';;;;;|
|...............|';;;;;|
|...............|';;;;;|
|...............|';;¸‹´
|,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|‹´

Much brighter. Now you may use colons to make a slightly darker colour in
another part of the picture.

......¸‹´’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’¸‹|
.¸‹´............¸‹´;;|
|’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’|';;;;;|
|::::::::::::'|';;;;;|
|::::::::::::'|';;;;;|
|::::::::::::'|';;¸‹´
|,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|‹´

Now use periods and/or spaces for the darkest sections

. . . ¸‹´’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’¸‹|
¸‹´............¸‹´;;|
|’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’|';;;;;|
|::::::::::::'|';;;;;|
|::::::::::::'|';;;;;|
|::::::::::::'|';;¸‹´
|,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|‹´

Thus leaving us to our contrasted picture.

- Semicolons and colons are now wider than periods and spaces making contrasting
much more difficult as you must realign after contrasting.
- Try blending of the symbols to create smoother contrasting. (;:; :) (:.:.) (. . )

Lesson 7: Censor Killing
Are you haunted by that dreadful censor? It's not your fault though, it happens
to everybody. Take this for example:

**1***********************000000*7**************1**
**1*******************000***0007$7______________1$$
$$1_______________000_T_0007____$$______________1$$
$$1___________000_L_0007________$$______________1$$
$$1_______000_A_0007****************************1**
**1***000*V_0007________________$$______________1$$
... Ouch. There are ways to avoid this. The easiest way to try and avoid this is
by putting a (c) between your text and your picture.
(c)
**1***********************000000*7**************1**
**1*******************000***0007$7______________1$$
$$1_______________000_T_0007____$$______________1$$
$$1___________000_L_0007________$$______________1$$
$$1_______000_A_0007****************************1**
**1***000*V*0007********************************1**

... but it doesn't always work. OR you could try put a (c) after each line,
like this:

$$1_______________________000000*7______________1**(c)
$$1___________________000___0007$7______________1$$(c)
$$1***************000_T_0007____$$______________1$$(c)
**1***********000_L_0007________$$______________1$$(c)
$$1_______000_A_0007____________$$______________1$$(c)
$$1___000_V*0007________________$$______________1$$(c)

It'll sometimes help, just not with this picture. Let's try moving my name,
changing some letters, and/or putting (c)'s around it, like this:
(c)
$$1_______________________000000$7______________1$$
$$1___________________000___0007$7______________1$$
$$1_(c)*VALT _(c)__000___0007____$$______________1$$
$$1___________000___0007________$$______________1$$
$$1_______000___0007____________$$______________1$$
$$1___000___0007________________$$______________1$$

:o yay! Enjoy your un-censored picture!

*** Note, switching letters for their clean counterparts often works well. For Example you can switch an e with a ê, a with å, i with í.

Lesson 8: All aligned alt codes.
If you're making an aligned picture with symbols that aren't on this list,
that picture won't be aligned. (Maybe not true after font change)
