Ruby, perhaps making the stem of the leaf more complex might help? Or maybe drawing a leaf that is more recognizable, such as a maple or oak leaf? Also you'll find that your signature making skills will transfer over to your ascii making skills. I've always thought it was better to learn signatures before ascii.
That was a nice attempt, Ruby. There are a few critiques that I would have though.
First off, I agree with Nop on making the stem a bit more developed, maybe like this:
..
,'`· „ ¸¸_
.´¬ *ˆ´¨¨¯
I like the shape of the leaf and the nibbles taken out of it, but I think the problem may lie with the veins. The colons are just too subtle. I'd personally makes lines just like the border, but not leave a space between the vein and the periods, just to make it so they don't stick out very much.
You've tempted me to try one myself, maybe I'll post one later if I can find the time.
Howdia, the letters are neatly drawn but they're hard to see. I think it's because the U's and H's are so similar; if you used a different background that makes the H's stand out and still keeps the drawing aligned, it would make it easier to see. Using a different color combination might also help the H's stand out.

The actual leaf part needs some better shading too. Too much space between the outline and the actual shading.
