A caber? Yeah, it's a Scottish thing. When various clans were outlawed and banned from carrying weapons of any size larger than a mediocre steak-knife, they took up throwing rocks and trees as ways to train, keep fit, be threatening and all that hearty stuff.
Over time, the log-throwing thing took off (at least it did if you were really good at it) as a show of strength, balance and control. You grab one end of an exceedingly tall, heavy wooden pole, then throw it up and forwards. If it flips over so that the top ends up facing you on the ground, it's considered a successful throw.
A 'caber' is in fact a word that could describe any large beam of wood, but it's immediately connected to "tossing the caber" at Scottish Highland Games in most people's minds these days.
