*Sometime Later...*

Jay sat in the desert, head in hands. He was exhausted, hungry, and incredibly bored. His mind had run every possible scenario, yet nothing made sense. Something was just out of place- why had he been sent here?
As he looked around, his mind finally came back to him. He was here, and he would have to accept that. Jay realized now that the important thing was not finding out why he was here, but finding the way back out. He stood up again and began trudging forward.
Suddenly, a female voice called out from behind him, "Jay, stop."
Jay turned and saw a tall woman with lengthy brown hair. She seemed familiar, somehow.
Jay wasted no time. "Who are you? What's going on?"
"Listen to me, Jay. This is for the better, trust me."
"What is for the better? Explain what's happening ot me!"
The woman sighed. "Jay, my name is Nya [Out of context: In the original 3, her name was with an I instead of Y, but the censor does not allow it now, but she is the same character]."
"Nya? Why does that sound familiar?"
"I am a former friend of Zert's."
Now he realized where he knew her from. She was one of Zert's most trusted companions. Somehow, he pictured her as being far older.
"Ok, so what's going on?"
Nya sighed. "It's... complicated at best, but very necessary."
"What is?"
"Unconscious memory compression."
Jay sighed. This already didn't sound good. "Wha...?"
Nya smiled weakly. "Unconscious memory compression. Let me try to explain,"
Jay nodded slowly. "Please do."
"Well, when you enter the virtual world of runescape, your consciousness and memory is stored in that VR helmet. Most people didn't think much of it. But, when events happened in my life that I wished could be undone, I began toying with it, and I found that this form of memory storage allows for what we would call, in simplified terms, time travel."

Jay almost laughed. "No, seriously? I need the truth."
Nya shrugged. "I'm not lying. You are in a compressed state of consciousness, your future, present, and past is all within you right now."
"That's all very well and good, but I'd really like to get back to what I was doing..."
Nya shook her head. "You don't understand, I'm protecting you."
"From what?"
"Exactly one hour from the time you were last at, the greatest tragedy in our lifetimes will take place."
"Might I ask what?" The woman's story was becoming progressively more incredulous.
"...The program will be released again, only this time there is no one to stop it."
"I was actually on my way to do just that." Jay shot back.
"You don't understand. You alone are not enough to stop it. Your allies are scattered, and warring with one another. You are alone."
Jay shook his head. "There's plenty of people that will help me when and IF the time ever comes. Look, I'm trying not to think of you as crazy, but..." Then, Jay faded out again.

As Jay opened his eyes, he was met with a smoldering landscape. It was the town of ardougne, yet now it was on fire, in ruins. Buildings had fallen, and corpses littered the streets. As Jay surveyed the area, he could see none alive, save for one figure, who stood with his back to Jay.
To Jay's right was Nya, who had apparently come with him. "Where are we?"
Nya looked grim. "One hour from the point where I picked you up."
The last living figure seemed injured, barely able to stand up. Suddenly, a portal of white light opened in front of the figure, and he stepped in.
Jay looked to Nya. "Who was that? Where did he go?"
Nya motioned toward the portal, and the two stepped around corpses and ash to the light.

Jay paused momentarily in front of the swirling light. "What happened here?"
Nya looked straight ahead. "The program was released here first."
Jay looked back at all the corpses. "They're all OK, right?"
Nya shook her head. "Not this time. The program disrupts data and causes severe problems in the real world, often resulting in death or comas."
Jay sighed. "Well, it hasn't happened yet, so we're ok."
Nya stepped into the light and disappeared. Jay hesitated for one more moment, then followed.

The world he entered was no other. It was simply a world of pure light. There were no walls, no floor, no ceiling, just an endless sea of white.
Jay was puzzled. Where was he now? He began to step forward, but immediately found himself fall. His body felt wightless, but he had no control over it. Finally, he came to rest beside Nya again, who was standing, staring forward.
Jay followed her gaze and saw the same figure, standing, facing several others. Was there some sort of meeting taking place?
The figure drew a long, black sword and pointed it at the man directly across from him. The man laughed a little, and released some sort of a dark beam at the figure, throwing him back several feet.
In a startling revelation, Jay recognized the figure now- it was him.
Jay looked at Nya, stunned. "That's me?"
Nya nodded.
"Then, who are the others?"
"The reincarnation of the program, Matthew Timmins, Scyne, Undershadow, Itari, and Zert."
"Well, shouldn't all of us together be able to defeat Scyne and the Program?"
Nya nodded. "Yes, all of you together should be able to."
Jay let out a sigh of relief. "Then what's the problem?" He faded to black once more...

When he opened his eyes this time, he could see nothing. Everything was completely dark. He heard Nya'* voice: "This is your future, Jay. Two hours from the point you were last at. This is what becomes of you."
Jay tried to see what she was talking about, then reality set in.

He felt himself fade for a final time, then reappear in the desert where he had started this journey through time. Nya was in front of him.
Jay stared at her for a moment, then spoke. "I...failed?"
Nya nodded. "Yes, Jay. If I send you back to the present in which you belong in the condition you are in, you will die in two hours."
Jay paused, considering his options, and wondering how it happened. "Was Zert or anyone able to finish Scyne?"
Nya hesitated before answering. "I'm not sure if you understand. You were not there with friends."
Jay was puzzled. "Timmins, Undershadow, Zert, Itari, and I should've been able to take the program and Scyne with no problem at all...Unless the program is really that strong?"
Nya shook her head. "If you had all fought it together, then you very well could've been successful."
Jay waited for her to continue. When she did not, he spoke up. "Then what went wrong? And you said that was another hour after I entered that portal? The battle lasted for an hour?"
Nya sighed. "As you know, I am one of Zert's old friends. So, I've saved you to save him."
"Save Zert? I'm more preoccupied knowing that I am about to die..."
"It may be avoidable, I'm not sure. But, I need someone to help me. Someone has to save Zert."
"From what?"
"Himself. Zert is about to make the biggest mistake of his life."
Jay was confused. "What do you mean? I can't help you unless I know exactly what is happening..."
Nya nodded. "I understand. Zert didn't come back to protect Runescape. Well, he did in his own mind- but his idea of protection is not what you and I have in mind. He wants the program for himself. He wants to release it against Runescape, and cause as much pain and terror as possible."
"Zert wants to... No, it doesn't make sense."
Nya continued. "He tried for years to get the government to shut down the game. They didn't listen. He is going to make them."

Jay was stunned. "So... Zert is going to make people suffer, as a scare tactic to get the game shut down?"
Nya nodded. "He knows the dangers of the Virtual Reality technology first hand. Unfortunately, this technology is here, and cannot be stopped. Zert believes it can, and intends to use the program to get his message across."
It actually made sense to Jay. It wasn't a kind move on Zert's part, but it was brilliant in a very twisted manner. He was scaring people away from technology. The program would be a very valuable tool in his quest...
Jay looked up to Nya. "So, I take it Zert and Itari were on their own side?"
She nodded.
Jay thought out his words carefully. "Who won, then? Did Timmins and Undershadow, did Zert, Scyne? What was the outcome?"
Nya shrugged. "That's not important. What's important now, is that you are armed with the knowledge you need to survive. I am placing trust in you to not only live, but to ensure that the others do as well."
Jay was lost in thought, contemplating the situation and what he would have to do. "What if I explained this all to John? He can help, he practically owns the game."
Nya shook her head. "I see there is much you do not yet know."
Jay was puzzled. "What do you mean? You've already put a lot on my plate, is there something else I need to know?"
She nodded. "John, the owner of Runescape, is Scyne."
Jay's mouth dropped. "No...that's just not... no..."
Nya sighed. "He wants to use the program for his own selfish ideas as well. He believes that the program will, in essence, create a human interest story in Runescape, and will draw publicity to it, instead of scaring it away. In the larger scheme of things, he is actually far less dangerous in his purposes than Zert."
Jay's jaw dropped. His world had been turned upsidedown.
