OFFICIAL UNITED NATIONS TRANSCRIPT
CLASSIFIED INFORMATION: DO NOT DISCLOSE

Rep. McArthur (U.S.) Andrew Gower of the former company Jagex Limited, you are here to testify on the event now known as “The October Incident”. Please explain these events to the best of your knowledge and answer any questions truthfully and entirely.

Gower: Yes, sir. In October 2006, relatives of mine went to a family estate in Bulgaria where they encountered (pause) This is going to sound strange, but they encountered a creature from the former internet game, RuneScape 2.

Rep. Altair (U.A.E.) You are sure this was one of the game-creatures?

Gower: Yes, the creature exactly resembled a game character and possessed several of the game items. Upon dissection, it was found that the creature had no internal organs, no visible means of life whatsoever. Furthermore, some of the creature’s armor, made from a fictional metal called “runite” was analyzed and its chemical makeup was unable to be determined. Many of the scientists concurred that the material was not even made of atoms.

Rep. Thompson (G.B.) And what changes to the game programming did you make at this time?

Gower: None. We were really baffled by this.

CHAPTER ONE

“Hold the line!” Tyler’s commander now yelled as dozens of helmeted heads sprung out of foxholes to arm the barricades. “Fire on my command!”

Tyler climbed out of his hole and knelt behind the nearest barrier, a small wooden structure only partially intact after the artillery barrage. Through the scope on his rifle he could see enemy soldiers in gray-green uniforms running through the woods with submachine guns. He zoomed in on one and held his finger to the trigger, awaiting the order.

“Fire!”

A controlled burst of three rounds erupted from the long barrel of his rifle, putting three red holes in the gray-green jacket. The surviving combatants dropped to the ground and hosed Tyler’s position with bullets. Soon Tyler heard something he had dreaded: the roar of a powerful engine pulling thousands of pounds of metal through the forest. He chanced a look over the barricade and saw the tank, covered in camouflage, winding its way through the trees with a train of enemies hiding in its wake.

A National Guardsman several feet from Tyler climbed up into a kneeling position and carefully took aim with his grenade launcher, tilting the wide barrel gently upwards. Fire and sound exploded from the tank’s main gun, shattering the Guardsman’s barricade and riddling his body with splinters.

Tyler took another look at the situation and decided there was no choice but to wait until the tank was upon them. He strapped the SAR-27 to his back, as it was too large to be effective in a close-range battle, and drew the AMP-19. Several moments later there was a crunch as a nearby barricade was demolished by the arriving tank.

Tyler pulled out a shrapnel stick and armed it, then stepped up as he folded back the wings, igniting the fuse. He hurled the sharp object like a throwing knife and dived out of the way of the submachine gun rounds soon flying towards him. He heard a satisfying crack as the handle end of the CFD-39 broke an enemy soldier’s nose before exploding, killing several of the combatants.
In the confusion, he slipped around behind the group of enemy soldiers who were following the tank and, standing safely behind a tree, stuck an arm out and opened fire with the machine pistol. Other Guardsmen around him took advantage of the enemy’s confusion by joining in with their assortment of weapons.
The tank operators remained unfazed and quickly dispatched several Guardsmen at a time. Now that the infantry was taken care of, the tank would eventually fall. The only question was how many Guardsmen it would take with it.
Tyler emerged from his hiding space and made a mad dash towards the vehicle. As he ran, he pulled the grenade launcher off his assault rifle and threw the rifle aside. He also threw aside his pack, pistol, helmet and CFD’s as they would only weigh him down. He watched the tank’s main gun slowly turn to face him as he pulled back the spring on the grenade launcher. Tyler heard a click as another unbelievably large round was loaded into the main gun. He leaped high into the air, angled towards a tree and acrobatically kicked off of the tree just as the tank round flashed beneath his feet. Time seemed to pass in slow motion as he soared over the tank, took aim with the grenade launcher, and fired a single round into the open hatch on top of the vehicle. He landed with a somersault and rolled behind a tree as the tank exploded, sending shards of burning metal flying through the war-torn forest.

Tyler suddenly twitched as he had the odd sensation of having the warmth pulled out of his bones. A roaring, whistling noise filled his ears and he felt his face contort in pain as random images of his life flashed before his eyes.
The metal visor swung upward from its position covering Tyler’s eyes. He ran a hand through his closely shaved blonde hair and found that he was sweating heavily. His fellow Guardsmen sitting in similar virtual reality chairs around him began a slow clap as all eyes turned towards him. He smiled, trying to be humble as he soaked in the moment.
They all climbed out of the virtual reality chairs and began down the hallway to a conference room to be debriefed, after which they were free to leave. Tyler was glad he had chosen the National Guard. Although there was the risk of deployment in wartime, he enjoyed the one weekend a month, two weeks a year schedule.
“Hey Tyler!” a woman called out.
Tyler turned to see Caroline, a fellow member of the District of Columbia National Guard, running towards him. She had black hair that was wavy as she had just let it down from the tight bun she wore during the virtual reality sessions. Tyler looked down in horror to see that the armpits of his gray DCNG shirt were dark with sweat.
“Hey,” he replied, trying to casually fold his arms in front of his chest to hide the unsightly spots.
Caroline laughed and shoved him in the shoulder, causing Tyler to bring his arms down and smile embarrassedly.
“You should be allowed to sweat after that fancy move back there,” she said. Tyler couldn’t tell if she was mocking him or not.
He decided to play along as if she were. “Just doing my duty,” he said, facetiously puffing out his chest and stiffening his posture.

She laughed and leaned on his strong shoulder as they walked down the hallway. Tyler and Caroline had been flirting like this for weeks now, and Tyler decided that if this wasn’t a hint, he didn’t know what was.

“Hey Caroline, would you like to go out to eat after the debriefing?”

“Only if you shower first,” she said wrinkling her nose.

At least she didn’t say no, Tyler thought as they entered the conference room and took their seats. Because Tyler and Caroline had taken their time, they were the last people to enter and the debriefing began as soon as they were seated.

“I’m afraid I have some bad news,” their commander began. “I don’t really know how to say it, so I’ll make it quick. NA*A discovered something in deep space that the President considers a threat to national security. However, he doesn’t want everyone to panic and riot, so exactly what this thing is cannot be revealed at this time. Basically he wants you to guard the Pentagon and the White House and shoot what we tell you to shoot, whether or not you know what it is. Report here at 0600 hours tomorrow to prepare. And soldiers, I don’t think I have to tell you, but when we’re dealing with an unknown like this, we should assume that the fate of America is at stake. You’re dismissed.*

Tyler went to his locker and packed some essential items like toothpaste into a plastic bag. Since he was coming back at six in the morning, he left everything else in the locker before driving back to his apartment in the city. There he had his much needed shower, put on a nicer shirt, and got back in his small electric sport utility vehicle to go meet Caroline.

Dle- As you can see from this chapter, Tyler was in virtual reality. However, Josh is not.

Fuzzles- I have most of this story planned out, but I might include your idea anyway so go ahead.

Oh yeah, one more thing: I'm going out of town for a week starting tomorrow. I'll bring my laptop so I can write while I'm there, but I won't be able to post anything. I also might have very limited access to another computer with internet, but it usually doesn't work, so bump my stories.
