~<>~ Chapter 5 ~<>~

The rain cascaded from the sky in furious torrents, pounding mercilessly into the ground. Thunder crashed overhead, and the sky crackled with energy as lightning illuminated the sky.

As the jagged bolt split the sky, it illuminated a small forest, trees bending in the tempest. Huddled beneath the canopy sat two drenched figures. They shivered as the cold water soaked their skin.

"We shoulda stayed at the camp!" Gerrick snarled, one hand scrubbing through his dark hair, now plastered to his head.

"You can never trust shades, Gerrick," Theios replied nonchalantly, one hand disappearing into the depths of his hood to scrub water from his eyes. "Now come on, the river is just ahead. We can take shelter under the bridge."

"Shelter under the bridge? The river's only where all the water run down ter," Gerrick snarled sarcastically.

"Would you rather camp out here? Trust me, it will be dry," Theios snapped, his damp robes dragging in the mud as he rose and trotted onward. Gerrick reluctantly followed.

Soon enough, the river came into sight, swelling as the rain poured into it. Theios trudged towards the wooden bridge, head bowed against the wind. He ducked under the supports, huddling gratefully on the dry ground. Gerrick appeared behind him, grumbling as he saw the ground was dry.

"Well, the elf were right. Wunnerful,” he muttered.

"Yes, the elf was right," Theios smirked in reply. He stood, forced to stoop under the low supports, and peeled off his crimson robes. Gerrick stared in amazement as an elven figure materialized from beneath the robes.

Theios was tall and thin, clad in a simple brown shirt and loose brown trousers. Snug boots reached up to his knees, turned over at the tops. Theios' skin was pale and sallow from lack of sun. His ashen face was gaunt and his eyes were sunken. His hair was light blond and hung matted to his shoulders.

"Well, it really be an elf, if on'y a half-dead one," Gerrick said sarcastically. Theios frowned, laying his robes out carefully to dry. Then, he stretched out on the ground and glanced at Gerrick.

"Are you going to sleep?" he asked softly.

"Someone's gotter watch," Gerrick said matter-of-factly. Theios nodded and closed his eyes, shifting to get comfortable on the rocky ground.

The shade slumped helplessly in the tent. He had to do something. He couldn't fail his Master. And not just for his conscience. He would face death if he failed. Now that he had a task, he had to see it through.

There was only one thing to do: track them. Drawing its hood tighter around its head, it stepped out of the tent, bowing against the tempest of rain.

In only a few moments, Ktroi's robes were soaked through. Ignoring the wet and growing cold, he gritted his teeth and continued to brave the storm. He stolidly followed the muddy footprints left in their wake, praying to Zamorak for forgiveness and success.

Ktroi's determination soon brought success. As he tramped on, he saw the swollen river ahead through a break in the weathered trees. The bridge stood directly in his path, and he could see the huddled shapes beneath it. He had found them!

Suddenly, he realized that they would be very suspicious. Why would he track them? There were two obvious choices; to kill them or to capture them. Hissing angrily, Ktroi made for the bridge as stealthily as he could. His only hope was the element of surprise.

Midway through the night, Gerrick nudged Theios awake.

"Elf, someone be out there. I think we was tracked. You'd best get y'self ready for a fight. I think it be one of them shades,” he whispered urgently. Theios moaned, rolling over and grabbing for his robes.

"Not so obvious, you dolt!" Gerrick growled. "It do be watching." Theios nodded, and pretended to be a sleep. He gave a loud snore and smacked his lips. Gerrick rolled his eyes and nearly laughed despite himself.

"Pretend you're falling asleep at your post,” Theios hissed to Gerrick. Gerrick instantly seemed to doze off. Meanwhile, Theios rolled around until he was over his damp robes.

“Can’t we leave those behind?” grumbled the thief. Theios shook his head and Gerrick mumbled a curse, causing a stifled laugh from the elf.

Gerrick watched the shade through narrowed eyes. It was coming closer, and as it approached, it drew forth the crimson blade of a shade.

"Get ready, elf," he whispered. Theios shrugged into his robes, preparing to say the words for a spell. Gerrick decided the shade was close enough. He sprung from his post, loosing his spear from its lashings.

Ktroi advanced slowly on the bridge. He was nearly there when a shadow seemed to spring forward. As it came closer, he realized it was the robed man's companion. The shadowy figure came slowly towards him, brandishing his black spear.

"Illumos!" The booming cry came from the depths beneath the bridge. A red-robed figure sprung out from the shadows, and bolt of electricity shot from his hands, lighting up the scene.

As his lightning lit the surrounding area, Theios' eyes quickly scanned the forest. His eyes alighted on the shade now entered in combat with Gerrick. The salty drops of sweat mixed with the fat raindrops, sliding down Gerrick's cheeks like tears of frustration. No matter how hard he fought, he couldn't find an opening in the shade's defenses. It took nearly all of his strength to hold the creature back, leaving nearly no opportunity to take the offensive.

"Gerrick, stand back!" Theios roared, muttering an ancient spell. Fire crackled around his clenched fists. Gerrick put the last of his dwindling strength into shoving the shade back, then diving in the other direction.

Just as he hit the ground, flames shot over his head. The shade barely avoided being incinerated, but its robes caught fire. With the creature distracted, Theios clasped his hands and muttered a few indistinguishable words. The limp, but conscious, figure of Gerrick grew smaller and smaller until it vanished with a pop. Theios quickly muttered the spell again.

The world began to spin rapidly and he felt as though he was being squeezed through a tube. Next thing, the city of Varrock surrounded him.
