With Skrae charging in, Koshei hefted up his sword to defend. Sparks flew as their swords touched. Even though it was successful, the block Koshei used had been a bad one, putting himself out of position to counter and exposing his entire torso. The Dragonkin saw this opening and seized it.
His red blade punctured through the man's chest, cutting through ribs and emerging through his back in a fountain of blood.
'I win," Skrae thought. 'I finally win!" Then while the blade was still inside of the man, he felt Koshei's gauntlet seize him around his hand and hilt of his blade. Horror dawned on Skrae's face as he realized what was happening. He tried to pull himself and his sword free, but Koshei had captured him in his deathgrip.
"I didn't think you'd be able to resist hurting me with such a large opening," Koshei spoke clearly with pain in every word. "I was right." With his free arm he circled his blade behind his back and started up a massive swing with all his strength. With his hand trapped, this was one attack that Skrae could not dodge.
The sword came down across the collarbone, and even the Dragonkin's thick armored scales and bones like iron were not enough to stop it. Skrae screamed as he was cut from shoulder to below the sternum. Then his knees buckled and he was on the ground, his upper body barely holding together.
Koshei withdrew his blade and prepared to take off his head with his final killing blow. Before he could, he saw a flash out of the corner of his eye before he was caught in an explosion of burning energy.

"Sakirth," Skrae whispered. Koshei, newly burned and wounded but still on his feet, turned to face his new enemy, and his heart sank at the appearance of the second Dragonkin.
Sakirth looked like Skrae, only he was at least a head taller and his left arm was not crippled like Skrae's.
Koshei readied himself for an attack, but Sakirth didn't even seem to be paying attention to him.

"You fool!" he shouted at Skrae. "You and I both know what's happening in the north. The Syzygy ritual could be any day now, and you dare to waste everything for revenge?" He backhanded Skrae hard across the mouth. The injured Dragonkin lowered his eyes in disgrace. "What if you were killed? And now look at you. You're in no condition to fight the Faceless Ones. Oh, your kin are not going to be happy to see you," Sakirth said, grabbing him sharply by the throat and hauling him to his feet.
A large red portal materialized in the air behind the two. "But I'm so close! Koshei is right there!" Skrae cried out. His voice was barely more than a whisper, and he started coughing, his lungs filling up with blood.
Sakirth turned to face the Fremmenik warrior. "We don't have any time or energy to waste on the likes of him now," he hissed. "But don't worry. You'll have plenty of time to eat him after the Syzygy is over and the Stone is ours."
With that, he and Skrae dissapeared into the portal.

End of Chapter 1

John look around. About one-hundred yards behind them he could see something, but whoever Sarah was pointing at was definitely not the man he had seen outside the restaurant. Leon was huge; whoever was following them was absolutely *enormous*. From the fiery glow of the streetlamp John could see an arm with mottled, sunken yellow skin, and veined through with dark tendrils. Then, it was gone.
"That's not Leon. Sarah, I think you should call the police, now."
"I already tried right as we were leaving! The police, my parents... It says I have service, but the lines all seem dead."
There would be no point in trying to run away from whatever was following them. Judging by its size, it would only take it one step to cover the distance the two of them could make in three. John lifted up his shirt, slid his hand around the grip, and slowly drew his gun. When she saw what he was doing, Sarah began freaking out.
"What are you doing? Put that away! You're going to kill someone!"
"Shhh! Keep it down and keep walking. You carry around a taser or anything?"
"Um, my mom makes me carry around a thing of pepper spray in my purse," she replied, now looking very nervous. "What's wrong? What's following us?"
"I don't know. Get your spray out and keep it out in case you need it."
"Can you please at least put away the gun? It's making me really uncomfortable."
"Don't worry about it; I know what I'm doing." Looking around, John saw they were now just outside the park. "Please, just stay quiet for a minute. I want to get a better look at this guy."
As they passed out from under the next streetlamp and submerged back into darkness, John and Sarah drifted off the road and to behind a nearby bush.

From their vantage point they got their first good look at what was following them. The yellow skinned, tendrilled creature had at least a good two feet on John and was about as wide as a minivan. Other than its skin and massive size this super mutant resembled a human, except it was noticeable deformed. John could see its shoulder blades and vertebrae bulge from its back like spikes, and the bones of its left hand were all twisted and fused together, making it resemble a club.
John could feel Sarah's trembling fingers dig into his shoulder. He put his arm around her and slowly they backed away, both too afraid to even breathe.
The creature, realizing it had lost sight of them, let out a loud, mangled grunt. It twisted its head around, trying to regain visual on the two, and began sniffing the air for their scent. The two increased their pace, soon finding refuge behind a nearby oak tree, the same tree John had awaken under only a few hours ago. From there they watched as the super mutant wandered around, searching for signs of them. The creature knew they were still in the area, but its sense of smell wasn't good enough to tell exactly where they were.
'What do we do?' Sarah mouthed the words to John. Without speaking, he gestured for her to stay low to the ground. They couldn't outrun that thing, and John didn't think shooting it would do much more than make it mad. There was no option other than to pray it didn't find them.
For several minutes they waited, the silence broken only by the creature's cries of frustration as it flipped over picnic tables and stomped through bushes looking for them. There wasn't much cover around, and it would only be a matter of time before it found them.

John scanned the area, looking for anything that they could use. The park was pretty clear with not much other than a small children's area and a few miscellaneous shrubs and tables that they could take cover behind. He thought they were both goners until he noticed a tree line to the north. It was a pretty good distance away and there wasn't much shelter between there and where they were now, but if they could reach the forest they might have a shot at getting away.
He and Sarah's worked in bursts, waiting until the creature had their back turned to them and then slowly crawling across the damp grass from cover to cover. It was a slow process and they spent most of the time on their stomaches, barely moving, but their focus was on stealth, not speed. After several minutes they managed to cross half the distance. As the creature wandered off in the other direction they prepared to move again, but as they did so John could hear the small crunch of a twig as it broke under Sarah's knee. She froze up, a look of dread on her face.
The super mutant turned and began moving towards the origin of the noise. This was it. They had been found.
"Run," John whispered, and at that moment both he and Sarah jumped to their feet and made a mad dash for the tree line. The creature let out a thunderous roar and charged after them. The two still had several hundred feet to go, and even with their head start the mutant was quickly covering the distance between them with its monstrous legs. John didn't think they would make it before the creature ran them down, and in that instant had a tough choice to make. Keep running and pray that both of them could escape into the forest, or try to buy some time so Sarah could get away safely? Maybe it was some sort of chivalry, but he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he let that thing hurt such a sweet, innocent girl.
