"What's going on?" she asked. "Don't worry about me; I won't tell anyone." She seemed genuinely concerned and not at all just trying to be nosey.
"I guess it started a few weeks ago," John replied, amazed that he was actually going to tell someone all of this. "It's my senior year and things started to get real serious. Colleges kept sending me mail and everyone needed a final decision to know where I wanted to go to school and what I wanted to major in. High school started getting pretty demanding and I was just so worried about keeping my GPA up so I wouldn't lose any of my scholarships. Then I had all these other things going on like my job, wrestling, and rugby, and I just started feeling overwhelmed. Then I don't know what happened. I guess I just decided to go on a little vacation to clear myself off all the stress, and somehow I ended up here."
"I'm so sorry to here that. Do you have anywhere to stay tonight? I'm sure my parents wouldn't mind letting you spend the night."
"That's really nice of you, but I've already got a room at one of the local motels." This was only half a lie. Technically he did have a room, but if he went back to that motel and the owner saw all the damage he supposedly caused, he'd probably end up going to jail.
"Alright then. It was really nice talking to you, but I really should be closing this place up now. Here, tell you what," Sarah said as she reached into her purse and pulled out a piece of paper. "I'll give you my number, and you can go with me to church tomorrow. Our pastor is amazing, and I think he'd really be able to help you out."
John took the piece of paper and put her number into his cellphone. He was about to tell her how much all her help meant to him, but when he looked up he noticed Sarah had a really unhappy look on her face, and for the first time this entire evening she was no longer smiling.
