Jagex make most of their revenue through advertising. Most people who play Runescape are f2p, if Jagex want to attract more people to play the game then they will make the f2p more attractive to people.
The more website hits Jagex get ---> the more they can charge for an advert space, and because there are alot of people going onto runescape, then thats a high demand for advert space -----> Higher demand = Higher price.
Then that means as members we can get more updates and improvements, because Jagex make more money.
Simple.

Companies pay alot of money, and I mean ALOT for advertisements, thats why F2P (which has the most players) have to see adverts while they play the game.
