He spoke with a loud, snarling, raspy voice “Tremble in fear, mortals. For I, Executioner Fah’lth the Infernal has come to be the harbinger of your annihilation!” The icyene warriors flew into combat at Ormus’ symbol, the imps were quickly dispatched, befitting of such vermin, Ormus thought to himself. The lesser demons also proved no match for the icyene, while they put up more resistance than the imps, they had been caught off guard and flanked by the more mobile icyene.

However, one of the black demons managed to react and quickly pounced upon one of Ormus’ soldiers in midflight, before they could react the demon had ripped through his armour and had begun tearing through the screaming icyene’s flesh. Ormus threw his spear at the black demon as it continued to maul his comrade, it let out a blood curdling scream as the spear went through his chest, Ormus then flew over, grabbed the shaft of his spear and pulled it out. The demon unleashed another cry as it attempted to prevent the black ic*or from oozing out of the hole in its chest, before it succumbed to its wounds and exploded, covering Ormus in ash and bile.

Ormus then turned to see the head demon with his hand around the throat of the other black demon, with the other hand draining energy from it, as the black demon grew weaker, the demon boss grew stronger and the glow of his skin was now red hot, and the stone he stood on grew black and started to crack due to the heat. The other soldiers couldn’t get close to the demon due to the immense heat it gave off. After a moment, the black demon turned to ash and its remains were either strewn across the ground or quickly slipping through its killer’s grasp.

The demon turned, it’s facial expression twisted into a sort of sadistic smile *I*ll let you have the first strike” it said gleefully. Ormus glanced toward the setting sun, it would be mere moments before the chill of winter took the land, with this in mind, he tossed the horn which had been fastened to his belt to Sophia and ordered his men to retreat and go to the island the barges were headed to, anticipating what their sergeant was planning, they complied. The demon chuckled to Ormus “How noble, but it truly doesn’t matter to me when I kill them, you merely delay the inevitable.” Ormus grimly replied “we’ll see about that...”

Ormus flew at the demon, spear at the ready, now had come the time for his repentance. He would sacrifice himself to save his men and prevent the demon from pursuing the innocents on board the barges. Ormus’ attack was quickly ended as the demon put its claw in the way of his attack, pain surged through his body, both from the claws tearing into his flesh, and the fire searing it. “Pathetic!” the demon roared as Ormus screamed in agony. Ormus then raised his shield and bashed the demon across the face, and while the demon was stunned, he lunged his spear into the right wing of the demon and tore a massive gap in into it. The demon grabbed Ormus and flew him at the nearest building, hitting it so hard that cracks formed in the bricks he was thrown into. “I will make you suffer for that, mortal!” the demon bellowed. Ormus coughed up blood and looked over to the sun which had now set and turned his head back towards the demon. A smile curled upon his bloody lips and he whispered to the demon “no... you’ll suffer...”.

The demon raged at the corpse of Ormus, beating it, blasting it with magic, stomping on it, until he noticed his breath. Gusts of fog came out of him with every exhale, and he had noticed a plane of frost and ice started to form upon the walls of the building and the ground. He realized that he needed to leave and attempted to spread his wings and take off, however, he then realized the nature of the icyene’s attack. It was not meant to be a parting blow as he had thought, it was meant to be a crippling blow, he had lost energy in the fight, and was losing blood through the wound. It appeared that the winter of New Domina would be his doom. The demon ranted and raved, raging at his fate, cursing and damning the icyene and his soldiers. But the rage soon gave way to exhaustion and fatigue, and eventually, the demon succumbed...

It had been many years since Sergeant Sophia had been on this island, she and her soldiers made their way to the spot of Ormus’ last stand, while they should be aiding in unloading the barges, Sophia felt that she owed it to Ormus and her other comrade to attempt to give them proper burials. While her men took the body the soldier who fell facing a black demon to bury in the city graveyard, there sadly wasn't much left of Ormus that hadn’t been reduced to pulverized mush or ash by the demon, whom was now itself just a mound of ashes that had recently thawed out. However, she did find at least one thing she was looking for, Ormus’ shield.

She took the shield to the long restored cathedral where Ormus had joined the infantry, the statues had been rebuilt, and windows had their stained glass restored and depicted icyenic saints and Lord Saradomin, new tapestries were made as well, however, the scars of the rebellion still remained with the vandalism on the walls. She placed the shield atop the altar and began to pray.

At the end of her prayer she felt a presence in the building, she turned to find none other than lord Saradomin himself, clad in his new attire. “He was a brave man, his devotion and sacrifice should be an inspiration to your people” Saradomin said in a calm voice. Sophia kneeled before her god and quickly said “My lord, you honour me with your presence, and you honour him with your words!” Saradomin smiled at her and said “there is no need to bow, I merely come here to honour a brave warrior who died honourably in my service.” Sophia rose and replied “He would have wanted nothing more...”

Very well written and compelling story.

There's only a couple things I'd like to mention. Some words were over-used it felt like, like Cathedral, for example.

Another thing was how Garlandia was portrayed. Given what we know atm about Garlandia, her being a brutal tyrant like you described her as doesn't really fit with her character imo.

But other than that, great job for a first time.

My intention was less to show her as a brutal tyrant, but more of a manipulative individual who saw themselves as better than everyone else and resented having to follow other people's orders or decrees. She was able to convince Ormus and many others that their actions were justified and were all part of a plan to remove the icyene's reliance on gods.
