Since ancient times man has been unwelcome on Kaonus; a harsh land plagued by terrible monsters that emerge from the earth, hellbent on killing and consuming. People have lived in fear, fleeing and fighting for their lives, further back than the oldest history books have recorded - both man and monster have existed.

Humanity struggled day to day, their homes ravaged by creatures too great for them to stand against - towns were crumbled within years of being built, people were scattered and turned on each other, further deepening the desperation. Sometimes it was as if the land itself conspired against them, disastrous earthquakes and hellish storms ruining settlements regularly. As it had always been so, humanity never wondered why.

Until He came.

It was said that one day the skies exploded - blinding light and blistering heat washing over the world, yet there was no pain, no injury. A figure appeared wreathed in flame and radiant light, one that gazed down upon them and filled each heart with unexplainable joy. Mankind fell to their knees as one, yet when this almighty being spoke - it told them to rise.

Thus the Brightlord guided mankind, uniting the scattered people beneath a banner of hope and warmth. With a strength none believed they had the people struck back against the monsters, reclaiming lost land and broken homes that, one day, would be rebuilt for their children's children. In the midst of their celebrations the Brightlord came before mankind again, now to tell them the truth behind their struggles - two beings like he, Gods, who had existed upon Kaonus since the beginning; the Underking and the Storm Warden.

Beneath their feet the Underking crafted monsters to eradicate mankind, a cruel entity who saw them as parasites that stole from his world. This God created the many earthquakes that shattered settlements, and changed the landscape to ruin any easy navigation. The Storm Warden created the storms that ravaged them, yet the Brightlord dissuaded any notion of malice from this God - the Storm Warden was akin to an animal, acting on instinct and without prejudice.

Here the Underking showed himself for the first time; breaking through a mountaintop on the horizon and roaring his fury at being unmasked. Sheer malevolence radiated from the deity as from the shattered mountain came countless monsters, descending upon man with intent to wipe them away. The Brightlord stood with man, arming them and leading the charge against the Underking's army - a great war following that lasted five decades and a day.

It was on the final day that the Brightlord claimed victory - He came to the Storm Warden and tamed the wild beast, gaining a powerful ally that turned its storms upon the Underking's forces. Even as mankind fought their last great fight against the broken army the three Gods did battle themselves, the combined might of the Brightlord and Storm Warden overpowering the Underking and banishing him back to the depths of the planet. Thus came the end to the greatest war man had ever fought.

A golden age followed as humanity rebuilt without fear of the Underking's beasts, the work of the Storm Warden became less hostile to man as a whole - even becoming a great boon as rainstorms fell upon ther crops. Humanity spread far and wide, building beautiful cities and works of architecture, the Brightlord hailed and worshipped as their salvation.

But while banished, the Underking was not defeated. Forced to scheme in secret, the Underking still sent beasts to the surface but in far reduced numbers - his power weakened. In spite of this the Underking forged a new method to take his revenge, a foul art that would gnaw at mankind from within - eating dirt. Spreading his dark desires through the soil itself and whispering sweetened words into the minds of weak men he convinced some of mankind to willingly consume dirt, forever corrupting them and turning them into his foul servants; Witches.

With their abnormal power the Witches set upon Humanity under the command of the Underking, causing great chaos and destruction. The Brightlord, infuriated by this perverse corruption of man, came to his greatest followers and gifted them with knowledge of his own great power. This power required strength of will, discipline, righteousness - those found lacking would perish during their own attempts at harnessing their core; violently combusting.

However, those who succeeded became known as the Paladins. Armed with steel and the magic of their God, the Paladins fought back against the corrupt Witches and burned away their taint. They became the peacekeepers of the land, great warriors and mighty heroes that fought in the name of all that was good. It was thought that the golden age would last forever, and indeed, many centuries passed by without serious incident.

Until the Brightlord's past came to damn them.

Where there is light, there must be shadow. Nobody knew when the Wraith arrived, its only hints of existence being the darkened hearts of man - people who were more willing to commit acts of selfishness, cruelty and evil. The changes came subtle, so subtle that not even the Brightlord himself saw what was happening until it was too late. The Paladin fortress of Esk Kharron, during a great summit where all Paladins were called to attend, was destroyed after a great rift opened in the earth, collapsing the fortress and many surrounding miles of land into the underground.

The results were devastating. Trapped in the depths of the earth, land of the Underking, with countless casualties from the collapse left even the mighty Paladins vulnerable. They were set upon by swarms of monsters, left with no way out they could only fight until their last breath - their God unable to reach them. In his grief the Brightlord did not see the Wraith's approach, His realization coming only when the shadowy God struck Him in the back and dealt a devastating wound.

Were it not for the intervention of the loyal Storm Warden then the Brightlord would have been slain - the sudden emergence of the Underking, renewed and more powerful than ever before, serving to thrust the world into crisis. Injured as he was the Brightlord could not win this fight, not even with the aid of the Storm Warden, and thus He made a choice to prolong what would otherwise have been the end. Using His remaining strength the Brightlord cast a great spell, forming a mighty barrier that would be known as the Accords, banishing them all from interacting with the world directly.

Thus it was with a final flash of blinding light and glorious warmth that the Brightlord was no more.

...

Three hundred years have passed since that day. Mankind has fallen back into the depths of despair as monsters once again roam freely, devastating the once great cities and towns. More Witches pop up all the time as people give in to the hopelessness and turn to the dirt, and those still struggling remember little of the teachings of their God. Man has turned against man once again, lost to the darkness that had once been everywhere with nobody left to guide them. Kaonus is a world without hope.

Yet, still... We must try, mustn't we?

~SUMMARY~

Hoo boy, that intro was a bit wordy. Sorry about that, been a while since I've wrote an actual roleplay - especially in Word!

Welcome to the world of Kaonus, a grim world of darkness, hopelessness and desperation. The intro provides all of the backstory you need, or at least the most important parts, so read through it if you haven't already if you want details on how the world became so shit.

On this roleplay you'll be playing as humans of various backgrounds who (hopefully!) will be drawn together through circumstance and, just maybe, a little bit of hope in order to try and put right the state of the world. You will face monsters, witches, magic, cruelty, crime and misguided people who no longer have reason to hope. How you deal with it is up to you, but beware - in these grim times it can be far too easy to fall into a place where you might never recover.

You're free to create geographical locations as you wish, whether it be a town, a cavern, mountains, rivers, whatever. You may also create your own monsters, but try not to go batshit crazy here.

~MAGIC~

There are only a few kinds of magic in the world of Kaonus, some of which you will not have access to for reasons that will become obvious. The first kind of magic the world has known is that gained through eating dirt, the simplest and most damning of ways to gain power. Those who willingly eat dirt (being willing is key. People cannot be forced to eat dirt, it wll do nothing to them) are forever bound to the Underking, their body corrupted and personality changed, but in exchange they receive foul magical powers that grant them control over the earth. Even more sickening however is their power to pack dirt into corpses, raising them as undead servants. You may not be a Witch.

Then there is the magic taught to the Paladins by the Brightlord Himself. Their magic grants them control over holy light and sacred flame, harnessing the power of their smouldering core to defend the weak and smite evil. The power of the light allows them to create protective barriers, blinding lights and even delve into the art of healing grievous wounds. On the other hand the magic of the flame is used to burn away corruption and evil, unleashing fireballs, conflagarations, the greatest weakness of Witches and their dirt-packed servants. However, harnessing one's core requires great discipline and training - less you involuntarily combust. The knowledge of teaching this magic was lost with the destruction of the Paladin fortress... Yet, perhaps there is still someone who knows the secrets.

With the emergence of the Wraith came another kind of magic - that of the shadows. To gain control of such magic is a sign of a twisted soul, for the antithesis of the Brightlord requires man to make a sacrifice - betraying another who truly loves them, through murder with the intent of gaining this power. If a man can go through with such a soul-wrenching act of evil, then the darkness within them is made manifest through this magic - and the Wraith laughs from beyond the borders of the Accords, for it knows that such a person could surely never be redeemed.

Two more forms of magic exist, powers connected to the Storm Warden. It was discoverd that there are invisible wisps of energy that fill the air, energy that those in the know call Ley, that can be felt after extensive self-training and meditation. This can take years to achieve, but once Ley can be felt by a person it can also be manipulated; harnessed and turned into raw lightning. The other form of magic is far lesser known, learned by those who escaped into the wilds and lived amongst the animals. These few people, of those who survived, learned how to achieve the power of skinshifting - taking the form of an animal. By reverting to a more primal state of mind, connecting with a far more feral side (again, something that can take years) they have uncovered this magic.

Finally, there are Relics. Objects imbued with magical power by the Gods, rigid and inflexible in regards to what they can do, they usually have only a strict purpose; albeit one that is both powerful and self-sustaining. Relics are exceedingly rare, and very much sought after.
