Semiprologue

------------------------------------------------------------

About four hundred years ago there lived a mighty fighter, Tarcan by name, who was held to be the best fighter ever born. He was more then seven feet tall, a giant among men, and carried a huge sword that had been a gift to him by the lava creatures.

The lava creatures were strong, but not strong enough to defeat the ruby-scaled dragon that came down upon them, slaying many and forcing the remainder into hiding.

Tarcan had heard of the dragon, heard that it was impossible to kill, heard that it's scales were as hard as iron, heard that whoever went up against it would die. So he set off to fight it, knowing that if he won then he'd be the most famous hero in the world. And if he lost... Well, he'd just be the same as any other human.

The battle was long and hard, smashing boulders and sending rocks flying many miles away. But in the end Tarcan won, the dragon lying in a pool of it's own blood, making it's shiny scales grow dull.

The lava creatures came out of hiding and rewarded him with many gifts, including his sword.

He won many more battles and killed many more monsters before his time came, and when it did his friends took his body and laid in in the most remote part of the wild, the place where he had loved to explore.

His tomb was huge, the inner part made of marble with a table in the middle of it. A table where his oaken coffin rested, adorned with rich gold cloth and carved with pictures of the many beasts he had slain. Also in the coffin room was a alter to Saradomin, decorated with blue cloth.

The outer room was also marble, with golden runes winding about it, that told the story of his life to any who cared to look. The front of the tomb was plain marble, with huge doors that stood open, giving any who passed a chance to look upon his coffin and read the rune-inlaid walls.

Many years have now passed since he died, and now his body has rotted away, leaving only bones.

The once-strong oak wood of his coffin has also rotted, leaving his bones visable, covered only by shreads of golden cloth and fragile bits of wood. Many animals have plundered this tomb, creeping through the marble doors that still stand open and thieving a bone to gnaw on in their dirt burrows.

Most of the skeleten still lies there, but perhaps eleven bones are missing.

If a traveler passed now, they would see the proud marble doors still open, the golden runes still legible. But the tomb is a figurehead of the past, and none came near it for a long while.

Prologue

------------------------------------------------------------

"Nearing ash pit," Rettan spoke into the comorb, "the ground is black, barren and ashy with no plants. There are no signs of animal life so far." He could hear the buzz at the other end as the king told his scribes. Finally an answer came.

"Documented. Please move on."

Rettan frowned, spitting out ashes. As the chief surveyor for King Chaltas he was thrown out into everything from unplesantly damp swamps to dusty, ashen, plains. He had broken bones and lost a great deal of blood in the king's service, and he was about tired of it. At least the pay was good.

"There is a large boulder ten feet to my left. Also, a cave has just come into view."

"Is this cave in the side of the cliff that you've been walking beside?"

"Yes sir."

As the king described the landscape to his scribes, Rettan moved foward. He inspected the cave, found it to be shallow, not more then four feet into the cliff, and went on. When the buzz stopped, he began speaking.

"The cave I told you about is only a few feet deep, no men could shelter there. The ground is still ashy, but it's turning from black to red." He took a small sip of water from his flask before continuing, "There is a stream of water coming from the cliff. It does not look drinkable however, for it is a dirty reddish color."

A few minutes passed, during which Rettan hurried ahead, leaving dry footprints on the parched earth.

"Documented. Please move on."

'I already have, you old fool.' Rettan thought rebelliously, before speaking. "There are still no signs of life. There is a large white something up ahead, other than that, nothing is out of the ordinary."

"Ah," came the king's voice, "Are you nearer to the white object now?"

"Yes."

"Does it look to be made of marble?"

"I am not close enough to see yet, sir."

"I will wait then."

Rettan trotted foward, closer to the whatever-it-was. When he reached it, he stopped and spoke into the orb.

"It looks to be a small building, sir. Perhaps a tomb?"

"Yes, that should be the tomb of Tarcan. According to records, it was placed somewhere in that part of the wilderness." the king sounded pleased, "Is it a marble structure with big doors on the front that stand open? There should be no signs on the doors, nor the marble housing of the tomb."

"It does appear to have been constructed purely of marble, sir. There are also two large doors. However, the doors are closed fast, and there are golden runes on the doors and the marble surrounding them."

The other end buzzed again, as the king ordered a servant to bring records of the tomb. In the pause, Rettan busied himself reading the runes that were set in gold in the outside of the firmly closed doors. Soon, the king spoke again.

"I have checked my records, and the doors are supposed to have been held open by magic. They are non-shuttable. And no runes are supposed to be on the doors."

"I've read the writing on the doors, sir. It is quite interesting. Would you like me to read it to you?"

"Yes."

"Ok, then. Here we go: The doors that were open are now shut.

I, Zyalen, have discovered that a few of the bones of the hero, Tarcan, have been taken from his tomb. Humans have not taken them, it is animals I am speaking of. I will now tell you something that may have the power to let an army win or lose. I have made it so that Tarcan is able to be resurrected. The only things you must have with you if you come to acomplish this task are these:

You must have every bone that has been taken from this tomb, there are eleven of them. You will be able to tell if the bones you find are the ones you are looking for, because by casting this spell I have turned all his bones from white to gold.
