I had to resist the pain! Yet a light started to shimmer and I realized I was dying. Mac sneered with triumph.
“I overestimated you,” he spat, then prepared for the final lethal blow.
“But what about me?” a cracking voice inquired and then an arrow ripped through Mac’s sword arm, blood spurting everywhere, and he dropped the sword. And then the light flickered off as a final surge of determination bubbled out of me. I lifted the sword and then cleanly decapitated the villain. Stephen gasped as he hoisted himself to his feet. The headless corpse of Mac wavered for a second before collapsing, blood pouring onto the floor. I clutched my chest and grabbed a bed sheet, hoping it would act like a tourniquet. Cameron was clutching a bow hazily, summoning his last bit of strength to save our lives.
“Good-bye,” the ranger murmured distantly.
“You’re not dead!” Stephen pledged, but Cameron had quickly shut his eyes. I rushed over and checked my friend’s pulse, tears gathering in my eyes. But to my utter relief, he was just unconscious. And then Clare stirred.
“What happened?” she inquired, staring at me.
“Mac’s dead. And I think we will be too,” I murmured as a pillar suddenly collapsed and flames licked down on us. It appeared that Mac’s presence had held back the fire, but now that he was dead, the inferno arrived. Clare screamed as I pulled her out of the way and the ceiling collapsed, stone blocks and plasters of flames thundering down, blocking the window. Stephen picked up Cameron and we quickly crashed through the thin wall as flames engulfed the area. Smoke billowed down the hall.
“Hello?” I coughed, then noticed a light nearby. We quickly clambered through a chunk in the wall and then dived for cover as the final supports were demolished and the house finally collapsed, the flames hiding the wreck of stone.
