The She-Wolf of Senntisten, the legend of a Zarosian Knight

Part One: Origins
The legend begins in the Fremennik Province. In the late years of the Second Age, before the God Wars, a girl was born in the Fremennik tribe, named Lyra. Just minutes after her birth, she was taken away from the tribe by her father. The sad reason for this was because her mother was a member of the Moon Clan, who the tribe had a bitter hatred for.

In exile, she was raised by her father, Olaf, a proud warrior and hunter, recognised by the tribe's leader for his prowess in battle. They lived high in the mountains, away from the nomadic tribes, so that they could be left in peace.
As Lyra grew up, she became very beautiful, with long flowing fiery red hair and pale grey eyes like runestones. She was quick to learn the way of a warrior and her father was impressed, and almost scared, by her skill.
Her life was quiet, and she was unaware of the events that would change her life forever.

At the age of twenty, she was out hunting for Polar Kebbits. She almost had one, ready to release the arrow from her father's bow, when she heard a shout that echoed across the valley. She recognised that scream as her father's and rushed back to the camp in fear. She nearly started crying at what she found. A wolf, nearly as tall as her, was attacking her father. She saw that his left arm was maimed and bloody from several vicious bites. She heard endless shouts from her father, telling her to run. But she couldn't. She stood there, frozen, panicking. Then, a surge of fear and anger overwhelmed her. The wolf could feel it. It growled and prepared to lunge at her. She grabbed her father's sword and, as the beast jumped, she buried the blade right between its eyes. The wolf collapsed.

There was no howl nor whine of defeat.

The blood-covered girl ran to her father. He had died from blood-loss. Shocked at what happened, she began to cry. She was cold, afraid and alone.

Part Two: The Call
Lyra fled the Fremennik Province. She didn't care where she went. She just wanted to be away from there. She took very little with her; her father's chain-mail and plate armour, his sword and supplies to last a few days. She, also, took the wolf's skin which she had fashioned into a long cloak that draped over her shoulders.

She wandered Gielinor, passing elaborate cities and many deserted and burned down settlements. To Lyra, this was all different and very fascinating. The Outsiders built giant structures from stone instead of wood and fur. Their society seems to have a lot more order to what she grew up with.

She learned about many different gods and their philosophies. It reminded Lyra of her father and how he taught her about the way of his god, the God of Balance. However, none of these priests recalled such a god.

She then met a priest who interested her. He told her about the God of Fate, Zaros, a very powerful god who resided in the province of Forinthy, to the north-east. She learned that he wanted to bring all of the gods under one banner by conquering land to bring the other gods to submission. He had acquired a powerful tribe, known as the Mahjarrat, from his campaign against the Menphite Pantheon.

Other priests despised what Zaros was doing. They told her that he was out to plunge Gielinor into a dark age. She was torn on what to do.

However, as she slept that night, she had a vision. She saw the land of Gielinor around her. Every city had flags showing a black cross on a purple field, the symbol of Zaros. Then, he appeared before her. He wore purple robes, much like that priest, but with golden armour and a mask on his collar. She could not see his face. He told her that he was impressed by what she had done in her life. He told her to travel to Senntisten, the capital of his empire, in eastern Misthalin, so that they could talk. She agreed. The next morning, she began the journey to Misthalin, just as Zaros has asked.

Part Three: The Encounter
As she approached Misthalin, she saw a land much like the one she had seen in her vision. She passed along the northern boundary between Misthalin and Forinthy, where she passed the city of Paddewwa. She asked one of the guards which way it was to Senntisten. He told her to keep heading east, on the way to the Hallowland, but turn south before she came to the Silvarea mountain pass. He gave her his amulet, a symbol of Zaros, to show that she came meaning no harm.

The road to Senntisten was very empty.

Then, out of nowhere, a small Saradominist warband confronted her. They asked her many questions; what her name was, why was she so far from home, where had she obtained her cloak from. One of the soldiers, a knight in white armour, gasped and unsheathed his sword. He had noticed the purple cross around her neck. Their leader, a man wearing runite plate armour decorated with the star of Saradomin, grabbed her arm. She screamed and withdrew her father's sword, severing his arm at the elbow. He yelled in pain and the knight in white armour charged at her.

The clash of steel against steel echoed before being silenced when she caught him off-guard and stabbed him in the back. As he fell, a wizard hurled a ball of fire at her. It missed, but she could feel the heat radiating off of it as it passed. As she approached, with a stone cold glare, the wizard held up her staff and prayed to Saradomin for help, before Lyra smashed it and cut her down in a single blow. With the other members of the warband dead, Lyra returned to the leader. In pain and still bleeding, he looked up and saw the woman who had killed his party. Lyra, covered in blood, put the tip of her sword against his neck. The knight begged for his life promising he would leave her alone, but Lyra would not listen. He then said 'I hope you burn, She-Wolf! Sara-'. She stabbed him through the chest and he trailed off in mid sentence.

She sheathed her sword and walked on.

Part Four: Senntisten
When she reached Senntisten, Lyra was exhausted. She collapsed at the main gate from fatigue. When she awoke, she found herself in a small, well-lit room. Her equipment was lying on a table near the door. As she got up, a tall figure appeared in front of her. He wore black robes with what appeared to be crimson armour. His face was very pale. He said his name was Azzanadra, one of the members of the Mahjarrat tribe. When she asked where she was, he said that she was in the Senntisten Temple. He the told her that Zaros had requested an audience with her. Azzanadra led her to the altar. Zaros appeared before her. He addressed her as "The She-Wolf", what the Saradominist commander had called her. It would seem that her violent acts had earned her an alias. Zaros congratulated her on her victory and welcomed her as one of his followers. He knew that Lyra had great potential.

She was presented with gifts from Zaros; a kiteshield blessed by himself and a small legion of chthonian and human soldiers. Lyra was also given a banner with her new sigil, a grey wolf head with a black Zarosian cross around its neck on a crimson red field.

Over the next few years, the armies of the other gods became well aware of Lyra's presence. She would always be seen raiding the lands of the other gods, to expand the the empire in the name of her lord. The She-Wolf became a highly respected commander, recognised by the Zarosian generals Viggora and Nex, as she would often lead charges against the enemy with them.

She had a brilliant strategic mind, and won almost every battle she and her legion fought in. She became loved by the people of the Zarosian empire, and thus was named "The She-Wolf of Senntisten" and Captain of Senntisten's defences. Her combat prowess was so great that even the gods feared her. However, through all of this bloodshed, her kind nature still remained.

She loved her people and would be ready to die for them.

Part Five: The Scourge
However much she was loved by her people, and however much the Bishops of Senntisten blessed her, Lyra felt that something was wrong. Something that, if she knew she missed, would break everything apart. It made her feel crazy and paranoid, at times.

However, she was right.

One dark and snowy night, as she was patrolling the walls of the city, she was confronted by two figures. One of them she recognised as Viggora, wearing his steel armour under a large cloak. The other was The Scourge himself, General Zamorak. He told Lyra that he was impressed with her skill and needed her help with a task. He told her that Zaros had done nothing, for the past few years, and the fate of all the people she slew was all at her own accord, not Zaros'. He asked her to follow him and overthrow Zaros so that he could attain Godhood and lead the Zarosians to a new future. Lyra was shocked. Zamorak, Zaros' most trusted general, had a plan to overthrow him. It made her angry. She shouted at him, calling him a traitor, and bluntly refusing to help him.

Zamorak looked disappointed. Lyra was about to walk away when he turned to Viggora and told him to kill her. The general withdrew his sword, and she did the same. The clash of swords rattled throughout the city... but no one came to aid the She-Wolf. Zamorak watched, with a sinister grin on his face. After five minutes, the sounds subsided. Lyra was stabbed through the stomach by Viggora. He threw her to the floor. As she was dying, he knelt beside her and muttered "It's a shame you had to die..." before rising to stand beside Zamorak. The two then walked off into the night.

She tried to shout for help but no sound came out. With one final silent prayer to Zaros, she died.

Her body was found by a watchman, the next morning. The entire city was struck with sorrow. She was buried with her father's sword, which she had named Fate-Bringer , in the Senntisten Catacombs the same day.

Part Six: Undying
Only a few weeks after the murder of Lyra, Zaros was defeated at the hands of Zamorak. He disappeared, only to return 20 years later with a large demon army behind him. This lead to the beginning of the God Wars.

As the God Wars raged on, stories started to be told. People claimed that the Temple of Senntisten was haunted by Lyra's ghost and that her wails could be heard throughout the catacombs. Some stories say that she is confused and does not realise that she is dead. Others claim that she is a vengeful soul, and will attack anyone who dares enter the catacombs.

The second theory has been accounted as true. When Senntisten finally fell, in about 3740 of the Third Age, Zamorakian forces were killed supernaturally when they searched the catacombs. Many believed it was Zarosian forces still in hiding, but some believed it was her ghost seeking revenge.
When Saradominist forces took control of Senntisten, they did the same, not believing the Zamorakian tales. As soldiers went down to the catacombs never to return, terror started to grip the city. The Saradominists sealed the catacombs and destroyed the city and built another, Saranthium, over eastern Senntisten to cover up Zaros' existance and, hopefully, calm the ghost.

It worked, and Lyra's cries could no longer be heard in the city. It is believed that she returned to her slumber. Saranthium was destroyed by the Zamorakian forces not long after it was built.

Nothing has been heard from Lyra's ghost for a very long time. Some believe that the awakening of Guthix and the end of the God Wars awoke her and she now wanders the halls of the catacombs underneath the destroyed temple once more, acting as its guardian.

One thing is for certain, though. If the ghost of the She-Wolf of Senntisten is still there, she is still fiercely loyal to Zaros, unaware of his exile and return or otherwise.

She is probably afraid and alone, just like that day so long ago when she lost her father.

Thank you for taking the time to read my tale. I've always been wanting to write this but never had the time to do so.
I may continue to edit minor things, such as grammar and punctuation, when I've spotted any mistakes.

I found Lyra a fascinating character to write about. I just wish that I was given more space to work with, such as adding illustrations. Perhaps her character could be included into a Zaros quest in the future. With the Return of Zaros, it seems fitting that Lyra could be one of Zaros' chosen few to help him awaken the Elder Gods.

I hope you enjoyed the story!
