He continues reading silently. She doesn’t move from her spot, hoping he’ll take more notice, before she eventually rips herself from her seductive slump.

*You really do read too much. We have an important mission tomorrow and you’ll be too tired to be of ANY use!” she hisses, angrily.

He looks at her, blankly.

“You know me better than that,” he sighs. “I’ll be ready in the morning, I promise.”

She grimaces at him and stomps back to her room, extinguishing her candles angrily before he hears he flop down on her bed. Just a few more pages, he promises himself...

The sun rises into a cloudless sky, and Atheana’s eyes begin to flutter in a state of half sleep as light slowly begins to creep over her eyelids. She slowly cracks one open as the intensity of the morning light wakes her from her heavy sleep. The infatuating scent of sausage enters her nostrils, alerting her that someone must already be awake, cooking. She rolls over, out of her bed and onto her feet, barely able to move with the weight of the previous night’s sleep still on her shoulders and eyelids.

Inside the living quarters, Hines and Dante are fully dressed, sitting at the small table in the corner, eating steaming, fresh sausages. Next to Dante is another plate, presumably Atheana’s plate, steaming similarly to their own.

“You cooked without me?” she asks, stumbling towards the table. “When were you going to wake me up, after you completed the mission yourselves?”

Hines and Dante looked at one another cautiously.

“Well, to be honest, we tried to wake you up a few hours ago,” Hines said slowly.

“You punched him in the gut,” Dante says, chuckling to himself. “We found the warehouse. We’d like to move tonight.”

Atheana looks back and forth between her two companions, who look guiltily at their sausages.

“You two are ridiculous. I’m still tired,” she says, getting up from the table, taking her sausage back into her room.

Atheana tosses the plate onto the red sheets of her bed and looks in her mirror. Her hair’s unkempt and she’s not properly dressed. She has heavy bags under her eyes, which she rubs at with frustration. In a matter of minutes she’s dressed, concealing her red dragon hide under a plain dress and cloak. She takes her belt of runite throwing knives, and files the razor sharp projectiles into her satchel, stopping herself from jeopardizing her cover with a larger object such as a bow. She bolts her door shut and unlatches her window, stepping out into the previous night’s snow.

Atheana recognizes the two’s footprints from earlier immediately, and begins following them. They trail all the way down the main southern boulevard, a street much nicer than the one they were at last night, and take a sharp western turn through an alley. She notices the footsteps are becoming further apart, as if the pair had started running. She looks around at the still, empty, blanketed street… on the opposite side of her, she sees a small trail of blood and footsteps that also appear to have belonged to a sprinter, going into the next alley over.

“This isn’t right,” she mutters to herself. “They’re keeping something from me.”

She follows their footsteps into the alley and follows then down the first right turn. She seems to be in the midst of a complex of alleys, with their footsteps following no obvious direction. She follows them for some time before she notices an irregularity, hidden amongst

several old trashcans. She approaches them, seeing what appears to be a foot sticking out of the disturbed snow, just barely. She pushes the cans over and gasps, looking down at a dead masked man, eyes glazed over and mouth ajar. His robes once concealed iron chainmail, but she could see where a sword slashed the cloth like newspaper and pierced the iron links. She checked the pockets of the man’s robe, and removed two dragon throwing knives, both with a small black coat of arms on their hilt. Hines and Dante hid a lot from her, she realizes, stowing the knives in her satchel with her own. She follows the tracks out of the complex of backstreets and alleys and sees the large warehouse the bartender Andrew described.

As she scans the area for possible look outs, the snow crunches behind her. As she turns around, a large, black hand covers her mouth and gently picks her up and drops her in a pile of snow.

“Shhhh,” Dante says to her, panting. “You really don’t want to be here right now.*

She looks around, forgetting to struggle as she would normally. In the alley behind them, a small crunch of snow is barely audible. Dante whispers very quietly to her:

“Hines is back at the house.*

As the figure appears around the corner, Dante releases Atheana, whose inhuman reflexes and speed send the figure tumbling to the ground in half the time it would take her to blink, if she had blinked then. The knife is embedded in the wall directly across from them, some six feet away from the mortally wounded assailant, whose injuries were clearly deadly.

The pair walks up to him. Atheana stares uncaringly at the throatless man, while Dante grimaces. The man, masked like the victim she saw earlier, dies quickly as blood soaks the snow, melting it and coagulating quickly.

“We couldn’t question ours, either.” Dante says. *That was one hell of a throw.”

“COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT’S GOING ON?” Atheana yells, unable to restrain herself any longer. “WHO THE HELL ARE THESE GUYS, WHY THE HELL DID*’T TELL ME YOU WERE ATTACKED, WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TO KEEP THINGS FROM ME!”

Dante backs up, clearly troubled by her outburst. He sounds truly remorseful as he speaks to her.

“Look, Atheana, we know you can handle yourself and you would’ve been a huge help… but Hines and I had to deal with one of these guys last night too. We did*’t tell you because we

knew you’d be the first one of us out here, hunting them. But we had time to interrogate the one we met last night… If they caught you, on the off chance that they might ever be able to catch you…”

Dante looks afraid to continue. Atheana glares at him with even more hate, and reluctantly, he continues.

“Black Arms gang runs human trafficking in Varrock. The girls get drugged and sold… These guys aren’t just assassins, they’re also kidnappers. We couldn’t put you in danger like that.”

She slackens her posture. “So I was safer alone at the house?” she asks him.

“Yes, they don’t know where we live… and you just killed the last of them anyways. Our first guy last night mentioned there were two more. We’ve killed two since.”

Atheana looks at him questioningly. “But you did*’t know any of that last night. Why did*’t you take me with you? Where did you go?”

Dante smiled, slightly embarrassed.

“Hines and I walked up to the General store of a bottle of Asgarnian whiskey. That’s where we noticed a man snatching a woman. We saw it.” Dante looks out at the warehouse. “Luckily we also learned something very helpful. They’re moving the weapons, into a carriage later and moving them out of the city. Hines already got a few gaurds pledged to help us reclaim the boxes tonight. The rendezvous point is just a block north of here.”

She looks at him, signs of anger still showing in her face.

“I’m sorry we did*’t tell you. We agreed it would be best not to put you in danger until we knew what you would be fighting for. We’re fighting for those weapons tonight.”

Atheana grinds her jaw, but is clearly no longer livid. The two walk back to their home, anxious for the night’s resolution…

The sky glows blood red, the sun now hidden, invisible behind the huge walls of the Varrock palace. Hines stands outside of the buy blue moon in, waiting for Hines and Atheana to find him. He anxiously sips his beer, watching dozens of people pass him every minute, going up and down the street and in and out of shops. The fountain in the middle of the city square pours water continuously, flowing like the city itself around Hines, whose eyes are now trained on two

familiar figures walking northward in his direction. Atheana and Dante approach the bar, and Hines drinks the rest of his beer, walking to meet them.

The three walk into the square together, first leaning on the rails around the pool in the center of the square, tossing coins into the fountain as they often do for good luck.

“One for everyone coming out of this alright,” Hines says, throwing a few pieces in with a single flick of his wrist.

“And one for all of my arrows doing what I need them to do,” Atheana follows.

Dante tosses his coins in casually, not saying anything as usual during the ritual. He watches the water with a careful intensity, apathetic to the remarks of his companions. Atheana watches him, wishing he’d say something.

“One for Dante to make a wish,” she says, tossing another handful in. “Why are you too good for our silly little ritual?”

He looks at her, bored.

“I just throw in money because you two do. Who am I to be above our stupid little ritual?”

She tosses in one last handful.

“One for this night to be over with already,” she says, as she turns around and starts for the rendezvous point. “Come on, we’re not going to be late.”

Hines and Dante throw in a last handful each and follow her, leaving the rippling water of the pool below the fountain full of gold.

The guards wait for the three, all of them sitting on the patio of the upscale restaurant they were told to be at. Atheana approaches them first. The group of hardened soldiers eye her with an air of absurdity, silently questioning the young girl’* authenticity.

“Alright, boys, we need to start heading to this warehouse,” she says. “I want all of you weapons drawn by the time we can see the gangsters.”

Dante watches as the soldiers shift uncomfortably before noticing Hines and himself.

“Oi, do you two know who this schoolgirl is?” one of them calls from the back. “We’re conducting a raid on dangerous mobsters, not seducing them!”

Dante smiles as the whole group of guards laugh. He hears the predictable twang of the bowstring’s release and watches as the guard stares in horror at the bronze arrow embedded in the Ruby Amulet strung around his neck.

“Mention me one more time and I’ll make sure you never breed,” Atheana hisses. *I’m the girl who’s going to teach you how to kill tonight.”

“I’m sorry,” Hines says, approaching the group. “Sometimes her ego manifests itself in arrows, knives, and sometimes even in rubies.”

The guard struggles to remove the projectile lodged in his accessory, but the shaft detaches leaving the arrowhead wedged between the ruby and its golden nest. The man sighs as what was once his nicest piece of neckwear remains blemished by the ugly brown metal.

“Alright, let’s start heading down,” Hines says. “You all have your bows?”
