The Silent Night

A few hours after the night had taken the town of Vrnirt, the moon shone at its brightest. All inhabitants of the city were sleeping, but one figure could be seen moving in the shadows. This figure seemed as though it knew every corner of the town, every house, every cat in the streets. Every time it would come to a corner, its footsteps would stop. It appeared as though it was waiting for any noise from either the guards on their rounds or a night walker. The streets were made of stone, and the water between the rocks, from the last rain, shone as the moon passed over them.

The stranger was extremely agile, one could not possibly have heard him, unless one had the ears of a bat. His head was clothed in a black hood that provided shadowing most of his face, only leaving his chin visible, but his ears made an impression on the hood revealing an elf. The elf's tight black shirt rippled in the wind softly, toned muscles barely visible beneath the fabric
His pants were also black and they enveloped the legs closely, but more loose then the shirt. His boots were made of soft leather, the boots were not loosened at all, they were in fact quite firmly wrapped around his feet. Two hunting knives hung from his bottom belt, both were obviously of high quality and were imprinted of a royal coat of arms. There was a piece of cloth coming down from the left shoulder, hiding the knives, and coming back to the right hip. The cloth was big enough to hide the quiver that hung from the stranger(')s back. The quiver was full of arrows, and a bow.

As the elven figure kept on walking stealthily, the guards who were doing their usual rounds were about to cross his path. Hearing heavy footstep, the spy quickly hid behind a house, hoping he would pass unnoticed. Slowly, the patrol walked by the building making loud noise with their heavy iron chainmail, but none of them seemed to notice the intruder.

The figure hidden within the shadows seemed to relax as the soldier walked by, but his breathing stopped once again as a guard armed with a halberd came back. The soldier came dangerously closer to the intruder. Right before the two would have met, the guard stopped and bent down to reach for a silver coin that lay there between the rocks, but a bright reflection in the water caught his eye. Looking up, he saw one of the daggers hanging from the belt of the hooded figure.

The companions of the young guard heard a cry of agony, recognizing the voice of their friend; they rushed to the aid, but when they arrived, the young man was laying dead on the ground with an arrow through his throat. The four remaining searched around to find clues to what had happened. A shadow moving rapidly down the street caught their attention; it was not long before they were running with all their might after it. Soon they arrived in front of an inn that carried the name, “Thor’s Barrel”.

Proceeding with caution, the guards opened the door of the inn and stepped inside revealing drunk men laughing and fighting under the music of a violin. Sap colored beer was spilled on the floor, and candles were lit all around the place. The night-watchers headed towards the bartender to ask him about the shadow that had rushed in the direction of the inn. The guards approached the unshaved man, and asked him if anyone suspicious had entered here recently.
The fat man frowned and these questions, guards in his establishment meant trouble to him. Finally, he chuckled and pulled his long, greasy, brown hair back, to exclaim out loud that absolutely everyone in his bar is “suspicious”. Abandoning this pointless discussion, the guards wandered around the place looking for the shadow that had disappeared.

Getting their boots wet with the spilled beer, the steel-armed men kept searching the place. The smell of the kegs filled their lungs and wandered into their minds, making most of the soldiers thirsty for beer. Soon the smell became too tempting, they could already imagine themselves gulping down the yellow liquid. The yeast-fermented odor was extremely appealing, and they soon sat to have a pint. The table they chose was located in the right corner of the inn. An old wax candle lit up their faces as they for a server to come and take their order.

The captain of the five remaining was called Throgorn, he had a large moustache obscuring his face, his hair was of the color caramel. The moustache was lifted up all the way to his cheekbone, Throgorn had taken special care of them, making them take the shape of horns. Knowing that the beverage would somewhat bring his men's mood back to normal, the captain smashed his gloved hand on the already cracked table. Catching the attention of the ones present at the table, he exclaimed to his frowning men, "This round's on me lads!" His patroon watched him burst into his legendarily loud laughter, still in the process of making a fool of himself, the captain reached for his belt and retrieved the leather bag which was logged there. As he not so gently threw it on the table, he once again opened his mouth, letting all know of his presence, "I have a week's pay in here lads, should be us enough to last the night!"

Before he could return to his previous activity of laughter, an old fat man whom appeared to be the owner of the place approached them. "May I take your orders fine gentlemen?" The owner who was wearing an old greasy white shirt, and a poorly cut leather apron hung around his neck, seemed to be quite bored and emotionless. His voice was as boring as listening to a beginner musician in the town square, trying out his father's broken violin.
