I stand, swiftly, and run up to him, wrapping my arms around his waist. It took him a minute to react, but he slowly wrapped his arms around me, surrounding me with heat. Then, without warning, he was gone, moving away, and Mary was walking towards the door at his side. A sudden peal of thunder rumbled through the air, and a flash of lightning made me jump. Mary and Daniel each pulled open their umbrellas and stepped out the door.
Silence settles again, and with it, the creeping sense of something wrong. I quickly reach out and grab the television remote, pressing the Power button so hard, I thought the remote was about to break. With a crackle of static, the television flickers on, and music blares from the speakers as two cops ran down a long, bland hallway. I find a blanket and pulled it over myself, once again curling up upon the couch, holding on to every little sound.
I didn't want to think. I didn't want to remember that day...
No, I can't go there. Not now. Not ever.
The sounds calmed me, held me stable in today, not in the past. I felt myself growing sleepy, but I forced myself to remain awake. Sylvie would arrive soon, and I needed to be awake to let the girl in. She was a nice nineteen year old who would come and keep me company when Mary and Daniel went away. She should be here soon, and then everything would be okay.
Then the lights went out. The television shut off with a blink. Thunder roared, lightning flashed, I was blinded, all was silent except the rain beating down upon the high rooftop. I looked up, peering through the darkness at the roof, waiting, hoping, praying, for the lights to return. I withdrew further into myself, huddling closer, and visions began to dance before my eyes. Memories, always forcing their way into my mind whenever I couldn't keep them away.
Noise.
I needed noise.
