‘This,’ declared the professor, ‘Is a unicorn.’ Various oohs and ahs came from the crowd as we gazed upon the caged quadruped.

I stifled a yawn as I looked over the milky-white creature. I could not fathom what was so exciting about a horned horse.

When I heard that we were to take a class field trip to the zoo, I expected that we would be seeing dragons and kalphites and other exciting beasts – Not pointy horses.

Leave it to Professor Marthas to render anything boring. I still recalled the time that he told us that a real live wizard would be coming to give the class a lecture. I eagerly anticipated what I imagined would be the coming of a powerful battle-mage who would teach us how to blast things apart using magic. Instead, we got a doddering old fool who rambled on about magical theory in an utterly incomprehensible manner and not once cast a single spell.

I expected more from this trip to the zoo, but once again, my hopes had been dashed. The most exciting thing we had seen thus far had been the wolves, and they were just the ordinary grey kind.

I followed the rest of the class as Professor Marthas rambled about the fascinating habits of the camel, mentioning in particular the vicious human-eating Ugthanki. If only there were a few of those here.

No, instead there were a couple of sullen, sand-coloured, very domestic-looking camels nibbling absentmindedly on some desert foliage.

It seemed likely to me that they had a greater chance of being eaten by humans than eating them.

This tour was becoming nigh on unbearable. When no one was looking, I quietly sneaked away from the rest of the group.

As I wandered off in search of more exciting exhibits, I could hear the professor mentioning the speed of the northern ferret.

As I looked around, a cage filled with ice caught my eye. It looked promising, so I approached it.

To my disappointment, all I saw were a few penguins huddled together. They turned their heads to look at me as I approached.
The Asgarnian ale must flow.

I decided to attempt to elicit a slightly more interesting reaction from the feathered beasts. Picking up a nearby branch, I prepared to poke it through the bars.

For a brief moment, I hesitated. There was something about the steely gaze of the penguins that made me uncomfortable.

I could not understand it, but there was something almost… *menacing*… about their stares. I did not like it.

Reluctantly, I forced the tree branch through the bars and prodded the nearest penguin. For a moment, I thought I saw a cold glint of amusement in the creature’s eyes.

‘Dossvedanya, comrade.’ whispered the penguin, raising a crossbow.
The Asgarnian ale must flow.
