Bolongowi would task his men with venturing out into nearby villages like Tai Bwo Wannai, and the now extinct Nawa Bunai, Kulu, and Hibis. The jungle has reclaimed some of these areas in the modern day, but Tai Bwo Wannai has remained - fighting off the encroaching threat of the vines. They would study the natives in these villages, assessing their capabilities, and at times, offer them an education, a trade, or work. Bolongowi, alongside Dudalep, Great Grandfather of the now renowned slayer master Duradel, built the village of Shilo across a year of blood, sweat and toil, and homed the skilled natives of these villagers there, hoping to create a new civilisation and take some of those who, like him, were native to Karamja and offer them a life free of poverty and tribalism. Ethically, it was questionable, but the moral intent was there.
The south of the Island was where much which is now lost lay. The Kharazi Jungle spanned for miles and miles - longer than the ancient Kharidian Desert - and lay home to a number of advanced and intelligent civilisations. Only one still exists.
Ape Atoll was once a bountiful citadel known for it's trade of woodwork and decadent food. The inhabitants were, as they are now, apes. They were able to speak the common tongue, were fearsome in battle (and adopted some interesting fighting styles), excellent politicians and incredible hosts. Since the island has changed, the apes have been exiled from the outside world and over time have lost many of their skills, including their grasp of language - yet they remain strong warriors. They were ruled by King Lolepe.
To the east of the Atoll was Erg'oj. It was perhaps the least civilised civilisation of those which were lost, and homed the Jogre clans which were initially bred in the jungles by the god Bandos. Erg'oj was not a place where people would tread lightly, although the two clans, Clan Erg and Clan Oj, were welcoming to outsiders. Must have been something intimidating there.
