Hello.

I remember back when I was much younger, probably around 15 years ago, the forums were thriving and alive and a hub for everything in Runescape. People would head to the forums to trade, to roleplay, to offer ideas for the future of the game, and my personal favourite part, to write stories - fleshing out the lore that Jagex built.

Runescape, and specifically Old School, is something I've always come back to. I'm now an adult, and I'm back again and ready to play with a new fervour - but I'm now sad to see that the once thriving forums, like many since the dawn of popular social media, are now dead. There's four people online as I write this.

So, I'm going to write a story. Something I did when I wasn't even a teenager, in the hope that someone, somewhere, might read it - and more people may come to the forums. Heck, maybe nobody will read it - but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Welcome to The Unknown Kingdom of Karamja.

The Unknown Kingdom of Karamja

Prologue

Karamja has not always been as it is. Gielinor was, years ago, one solid land mass. Areas like Entrana were easily accessible by walking through the Kingdom of Asgarnia or the Kingdom of Kandarin, the northern folk of the Fremennik Provinces and associates Isles would visited by the mages and adventurers of the once thriving community on Crandor - without a need for seafaring. Locals from anywhere could, in a matter of weeks or months, find themselves travelling to the other side of the world, before the seas rose and covered vast swathes of history and culture within their emerald depths.

Much of Karamja was lost to the rising of the tides. Books, and outsiders, will tell you that before being colonised the island was overrun by murderous savages, thirsty for bloodshed and desperate to appease their gods with a sacrifice in their name. Many say that some of the savages still remain, indigenous people wandering around in loincloths and carrying spears to intimidate trespassers on their land. While, you may find, the latter is somewhat true - there are many civilised and intelligent folk who live amongst the tropical trees and exotic shrubbery.

Before the tides rose, and left little behind but the villages of Shilo, Tai Bwo Wannai and part of the Kharazi Jungle, and before the northern and eastern reaches of this new island were colonised by outsiders, there were many areas to behold that made up Karamja. And these areas? They all worked together as one, in unity.

To the east, reaching towards the Feldip Hills, there was the Stronghold of Cairn, lead by General Bolongowi. He was an aging man, his wiry hair and beard tinted with flecks of grey - but he bore more scars than he had wrinkles. The stronghold was under his command, but they did not thirst for battle or war. They were a stronghold of knowledge.

Bolongowi would task his men with venturing out into nearby villages like Tai Bwo Wannai, and the now extinct Nawa Bunai, Kulu, and Hibis. The jungle has reclaimed some of these areas in the modern day, but Tai Bwo Wannai has remained - fighting off the encroaching threat of the vines. They would study the natives in these villages, assessing their capabilities, and at times, offer them an education, a trade, or work. Bolongowi, alongside Dudalep, Great Grandfather of the now renowned slayer master Duradel, built the village of Shilo across a year of blood, sweat and toil, and homed the skilled natives of these villagers there, hoping to create a new civilisation and take some of those who, like him, were native to Karamja and offer them a life free of poverty and tribalism. Ethically, it was questionable, but the moral intent was there.

The south of the Island was where much which is now lost lay. The Kharazi Jungle spanned for miles and miles - longer than the ancient Kharidian Desert - and lay home to a number of advanced and intelligent civilisations. Only one still exists.

Ape Atoll was once a bountiful citadel known for it's trade of woodwork and decadent food. The inhabitants were, as they are now, apes. They were able to speak the common tongue, were fearsome in battle (and adopted some interesting fighting styles), excellent politicians and incredible hosts. Since the island has changed, the apes have been exiled from the outside world and over time have lost many of their skills, including their grasp of language - yet they remain strong warriors. They were ruled by King Lolepe.

To the east of the Atoll was Erg'oj. It was perhaps the least civilised civilisation of those which were lost, and homed the Jogre clans which were initially bred in the jungles by the god Bandos. Erg'oj was not a place where people would tread lightly, although the two clans, Clan Erg and Clan Oj, were welcoming to outsiders. Must have been something intimidating there.

On the far eastern reaches was Margo. These were settlers from the Kharidian Desert, from the ancient cities now known as the divided Menaphos and Sophanem, and from Unkah and Bedabin. The citadel walls of Margo were filled with exotic spices, divine tapestries and scholars who were so intelligent that a university was set up between the desert and the jungle so inhabitants from both areas could travel to study and expand their knowledge.

Spanning across the entire southern side of the island was what was considered the capital of Karamja, Karamano. Karamano housed royal palaces, vast settlements and was the hub of everything on Karamja.

The capital was ruled by King Nadi, and his wife, Queen Melophisa. Their bloodline had followed from the tortured Queen Rashiliyia and her husband King Danthalas. They had a son, Bervirius, who was murdered in battle, and a daughter, Sirveset, who was exiled to Margo during the Third Age to study in hiding. Rashiliya had been a powerful sorceress who fell in love with a high Zamorakian priest named Zadimus, and fell into despair and madness when her advances were rejected.

She tortured and hung Zadimus from the citadel steps, before swearing fealty to Zamorak if her murdered son was returned to her. Return he did, as an undead, before he terrorised his mother and father, driving Danthalas to abdicate the throne and flee into exile with his daughter. Bervirius rampaged through Karamano, killing civilians and guards until he was quelled by fire. Rashiliyia grieved for her son once more, growing tired and bitter as she aged, before she died and was buried in a hidden tomb.

The throne of Karamano lay vacant for twenty years after her death, when Danthalas returned, as his last act before his own death, with Sirveset in tow. She would take the throne and rule the combined isle of Karamja from here until the late fourth age.

Karamano has a story that is untold. As do Sirveset and Nadi. This, is the Unknown Kingdom of Karamja.
