But Nhur himself seemed different to Uthalion. In the past the Mahjarrat had seemed weaker than he had appeared now, and on top of that, shadowstuff was crawling over the visible parts of his skeletal body, and even his armor, which hung from his body in a menacing manner as the abyssal contours swirled in a never-ending pattern.

The Talisman was still perched on his chest, but he sensed that the artifact was dormant at that very moment. How he knew that was beyond him, and the thought that maybe he grew a link to it while carrying it scared Uthalion much more than the creatures it spawned could ever do.

“What’s the situation?” Nhur asked Uthalion.

The conscripted hunter saluted the Emperor, and replied, “Ordinator patrols were sent into the city to try and contain the fires as much as possible. Spymaster Erevin accompanied them so he could aid them with his strange magiks."

"That’s a start,” Nhur said. “Any news on the creatures that caused this?”

“Well,” Uthalion began. “I think it would be best if you saw it for yourself. I’m having a hard time imagining it myself, in all honesty.”

“Show me.”

Uthalion led Nhur to the entrance gate of the palace courtyard, and entered the nearest guard tower. The pair ascended the winding staircase, and when they reached the battlements, Uthalion pointed out into the distance. Nhur followed his arm, and beheld a strange sight that day.

Doomhounds of all sizes were gathered in the plaza and surrounding rooftops which led to the palace. Some did*’t seem to notice the pair, while others stared right back at the onlookers. Strangest of all was the fact that they were all silent. No single hound dared howl or make any noise to signal an attack, and no creature even attempted to make a move towards the palace drawbridge. They just…sat there.

“Curiouser and curiouser,” Nhur muttered. “It’s like they’re waiting for something.”

“That’s my thoughts as well,” Uthalion admitted. “But I fear ordering an attack may very well cause them to rush our position and overrun us.”

“A well founded fear,” the Mahjarrat agreed. “But this is also an opportunity for us as well. A large number of the things are sitting right here in front of us, and we can possibly thin their ranks if we react accordingly.”

“What do you have in mind?” Uthalion asked.

Kaz watched as the Ordinators stood at rapt attention while their Emperor came out of a nearby guardhouse with Uthalion. The Mahjarrat seemed to be in a militant mood at that point, which didn't help her own mood in the slightest.

“Alright, everyone listen up,” Nhur shouted. “As I speak, the enemy is amassing at our own doorstep!” He pointed to the open drawbridge and added, “I want anyone who can swing a sword, shoot a bow and arrow or what have you, sling a spell…hell, anyone who can *fight*… to walk, crawl, limp, or drag themselves out here immediately and hold this line!”

“Gee, the bone man is in a crappy mood today,” a voice sounded from behind the raven haired mage.

“Save it, monster,” she spat. “There’s nothing more you can do to me today that can hurt me any worse than I am right now."

The Inner Demon appeared before Kaz, and made a mocking bow. “You’re grieving,” it said. “That’s understandable.”

“No thanks to you,” she replied.

The demon looked confused. “What are you talking about?” it asked. “I haven’t seen you since earlier in the day.”

“No more games,” she said as she began making her way towards Uthalion. “You and I both know what you tried doing during the ritual.”

“The only ritual I know of is one which would give you the power to survive,” the demon said, keeping pace with Kaz. “And one I come to offer you now, in these dark times.”

“Hell no," Kaz replied. “Not interested.”

The demon appeared in front of Kaz, stopping her in her tracks. “Listen carefully,” it said. “The bone man is the reason for your grief, yes? You gave him power, didn't you?”

“Where’s this going?” Kaz asked.

“Quite simply, I know you wish the bone man dead,” the demon replied. “But to face him in your current condition, much less the servants of the enemy, would be suicidal. You know this in your heart.”

Kaz glanced back at Nhur, and winced as she thought over the creature’s words. She knew it was true that Nhur was more powerful than ever now thanks to the Ascension Ritual. And she *did* intend to kill him, but could she reserve enough power to actually do it when the time came? Then again, why bother reserving her magic if the power of the Fade Realm was limitless?

*^+^*

Uthalion caught a glimpse of Kaz across the courtyard as the Ordinators and other armed citizens began forming their defensive lines. She was looking at Nhur, and seemed preoccupied with something, but he couldn’t see what. He called her name, and approached her.

“Kaz! Hey, over here!” When the Fade Witch turned to look at him, he stopped. She seemed different as well, and he felt the air of an unnatural power around her. Her eyes also seemed to glow with a green tint, but he wasn’t sure if the stress of the situation was taking its toll on him or not.

“What’s the matter?” she asked, her voice resounding with a hint of corruption in it.

“Umm…” he began. “I was wondering…are you alright? You seem...stressed."

"We’re in the middle of a burning city surrounded by enemies,” she said. “Who wouldn’t be stressed at this point?”

“Point taken,” he replied. Howls began sounding in the distance, and cries went up through the courtyard as the defenders began drawing their weapons and readying their spells.

“Hm…looks like they’re coming,” Kaz said nonchalantly.

“Yeah,” Uthalion agreed. Drawing his weapons, he added, “We need to get in position. Now.”

He heard the scraping of claws against wood as the horde of Hounds made their way over the drawbridge.

V’s vision cleared as the portal closed behind him, eliminating the glow in the night sky. He looked over, and saw that the others and their arial mounts in the form of young wyverns had cleared the portal as well, and averted his gaze to the ground below. The countryside zoomed by quickly, and it was only a matter of minutes before he beheld the sight of Ukrosha.

The city seemed bigger in the air, he thought. He saw that his initial impressions were far off in their assumptions about the city, for where he thought the different districts would have been sealed off by walls, they were instead only marked by towering stone obelisks which seemed to grasp for the air. The city itself was circular in shape, giving the impression that it was an eye looking towards the heavens, and at the center he saw the massive Imperial Palace.

“Crap, it’s really bad,” Arial shouted. “Take us down,” he urged his mount. “We can land on a rooftop somewhere without drawing attention to ourselves.”

“Ha!” Lord Talon boomed. “Like anyone will miss a bunch of wyverns and a Jabberwocky landing in the middle of the damn city!”

“Do you have any other bright ideas?” V asked.

Arial shrugged. “Yeah, but it’s a long shot,” he replied. “If this doesn’t work, then at least we can say we made it this far!”

The general waited until the group had passed over a portion of the city that didn't seem to be in flames, and slung his leg over the side of the wyvern, which gave a protesting cry. With a push, Arial jumped off of the wyvern, and plummeted to the ground below. V followed the falling figure with his eyes, and saw that his cape had flared up in the air, seemingly slowing his fall.

“Dude has balls,” Joran said.

V had to agree. It took a lot of guts to leap off of a flying mount and right into the firestorm that was no doubt brewing in Ukrosha that very moment.

And in honesty, he felt that he was just as insane for following the general’s lead at the time. He closed his eyes as the city drew ever close, and hoped his power would at least magnify the magic in his cloak at that moment…if it even existed at all, that is.

Was going to leave a comment earlier but the computer sorta decided to cough up like, 20 lungs before it just died on me... >.>

Anyway, this is the last update for the month. So for next month:

~Doomhounds
~Bald guys in blue bathrobes
~Scores are finally going to be settled...

And the first shots of a very brutal Onslaught will be fired. I'm kinda bouncing off the walls just thinking about it tbh :P
<>
As far as ETAs...no comment thanks to me being unsure of how long the final chapter will be. So don't be surprised if it takes more than two weeks >.<

...UPDATE!!!

just popped by to mention I finsihed reading ch21. Am I the only one posting?

the little duel between the cats ended in a draw, I guess, no clear winner so far.

I like how sides or plans change here and there. what I love is that it's not just good vs evil in point-form, it has a developing element.

what I found a bit off was when Raj got stabebd in the neck. actaully what happens, when you get stabbed in the front of the throat, there is actually little blood because oxygen goes into the wound from the outside or something like that. it does bleed, but not profusely, or so that's what I've heard about.

also, if you get stabbed into the lungs, blood leaks out in frothy form.

as for me knowing things like that, I've been reading about the Middle Ages for about my whole life, it was just something of my interest since childhood. its mostly European, and not much else.

what I do know is that I think in Japan some people would get hanged by lute strings, sometimes resulting in decapitations.

Charles the Rash was killed by a Swiss peasant with a halberd, the axehead having split Charles' head vertically passed the jaw despite he having worn a helm.
never underestimate angry Swiss peasants with halberds >XD

until next time I guess. cant wait until half-dragons get their wings ripped apart by a huger doomhound or something.

Tbh Ogre posts from time to time too...and I've been told by a few people from a cc I use that they're following it but don't post because they're either perm banned from the forums or can't access them thanks to being a low leveled f2p user. So yeh, so far it's just you and Ogre commenting on the actual thread, but you're not the only one giving feedback or anything on the whole project :P

Yeah, the whole Good/Evil thing was never something I liked in most stories. It just seems so...overdone. So yeh...don't know what else to say other than everyone can expect more of that kind of thing in later entries in the series.

As for Rajh's little duel...I'll just say it's artistic license and go with that. Different people imagine different things, so it's sort of hard (for me at least) to write a scene like that with real life accuracy that doesn't come off as either too boring or something that can be found in a med student's textbook O_o

^And so far the general opinion seems to be a draw too. Though popular belief so far thinks that Rajh kind of redeemed himself for talking like an idiot in the first half by taking his old enemy down with him. Interesting, the impact that scene had was :P

Ah, so that explains a lot. I kind of had a feeling you studied it at one point, I just wasn't sure if it was out of personal interest or because of school making you do a paper (I don't get why people underestimate angry peasants either tbh) :P
