If it wasn't obvious from me actually getting off of my lazy ass and updating this thing, I'm back from hell (sorta).

As far as adds go, Chapters 7-8 are currently done, but they'll take a week or so for me to put up since for some reason the usb key had a pass code added to the document I was keeping them on courtesy of a family member who will be shortly shot in the head with nerf balls repeatedly until he spills the details (I'm automatically assuming he's gonna lie, so yeah....that might take a while) >.>

Anyway, thanks to Ogre for keeping this thing alive in the meantime. It's really appreciated :D

Chapter 7
<><>
Kaz woke to a loud banging on her door. She ignored it and turned over in her bed, mumbling something about rude awakenings and such. However, whoever was trying to get her attention was persistent, and soon the banging grew louder and more rapid until she couldn’t take it anymore.

“Alright, alright,” she shouted as she got out of the bed. “I’m up already! Just hold on a second, will you?!” She walked over to a small wall-mounted mirror, and checked her face carefully. Normally she wouldn’t bother with the meaningless routine, but if it wasn’t for her odd condition…..well, she knew she couldn’t afford to take any chances and accidentally manifest something that could end up killing the entire base.

Satisfied that no signs were apparent, Kaz headed to the door and spoke a mystical word, which caused her “door”- which was really more like a piece of wall that was magically enchanted- to slowly open without a sound. Rajh stood in the doorway, dressed in plain civilian clothes and not his hunter’s gear for once, which she found odd. It was unlike a Rakshasa to go about dressed in anything that couldn’t possibly be used to protect themselves in combat.

“Ah, good. You’re up,” he said. "Zare's a briefing in a few minutes, and you said zhat you vould be present.”

“Oh, yeah. That. Just give me a minute, I have to get some things out of my desk.”

Before the tiger-man could protest, the door closed just as silently as it opened. Kaz looked around her room, and sighed as she slumped against a wall. Her room wasn’t exactly big. The entire area just consisted of a small desk in the corner under the mirror on her wall, a rug, and a small bed with her clothes chest at its foot, and all of it was lit by a carefully hidden source of fairie fire that she had trapped in the walls years prior to the rebellion moving in. Even the walls were bare, which did little to help ease her mind.

Kaz got up and walked over to the desk. Sitting on it was the small bag that she had put the Skiven crystal in, which she picked up and tucked into her robe pocket.

“Ha! Amateur,” a voice sounded from within the room.

She immediately looked at the mirror, and instead of her reflection, a creature’s face appeared instead. Its features were obviously feminine, but beyond that, it was anything but human, or shade for that matter.

Its skin was gaunt and yellowed, with purple hair pulled back into a mockery of a ponytail framing a face which held eyes that were as black as the deepest parts of the abyss itself. The lips, as white and next to nonexistent as they were, failed to hide the things pointed teeth, which seemed to promise a quick death to those on the receiving end of its bite.

Kaz took a step back, and kept one of her hands by the bag as she lifted the other in a gesture that was taught to all Chantry mages in order to keep fell creatures from attacking. “You again?” she asked. “I already told you, I’m not afraid of you.”

The creature howled in laughter, which was actually a sound that could be very vaguely described as such. “Poor, poor child,” the creature cooed. “You have me all wrong. I do not wish to bring ill fortune to you this day, but rather, a…..warning, if you will.”

Now it was Kaz’s turn to laugh. “Yeah, like I should believe that,” she spat. “Believe what you will, but I’m not stupid.”

“Indeed, little shadow, that much is apparent. I shall be the first to admit, I do not blame you for not trusting me. You and I both know that my kind shall ever seek to cross over, but for once I come with different intentions.”

Kaz slowly made her way towards her door, keeping her eye on the being as it rambled on. “I come to you,” the creature said. “Because a strange power has rippled across the har’jhlistuah, and I believe its herald is coming your way.”

“So?” she asked. “What’s it mean to me if you feel something stranger than usual?”

The creature looked at her in contempt. “You and I….we both share the same source. Should something weaken my power, yours too shall weaken. And vice versa. This has cause for concern for both of us, because this power that has been felt is….odd, yet, familiar. Almost primordial, in a way."

Kaz began to wave her free hand towards the door, but the creature noticed before she could muster any magical power. "Don’t even think about it,” it said narrowing its eyes. “The Rakshasa on the other side won’t notice me, and even if he did….well, you know that my kind can only be dealt with by those who spawn us.”

Kaz let her hand drop in defeat. She knew it was right, and she was unsure if bringing Rajh into the room would solve anything as it stood. “Alright, then. I want you to tell me everything you know. On your honor, of course.”

If the creature could smile, Kaz guessed it must be doing so at that very moment. “I see you’ve grown wiser, little shadow. Very well, what I know is this: The power is not natural. It...changes things, and not in a good way.”

“So whatever this thing is, you fear it could change the Fade Realm?”

“Not just change,” the creature replied. “But completely renew it.”

“And that means…”

“Yes," it interrupted. "Should that happen, I fear you might not survive. The surge of power might be too much, and there are too few Fade Witches in the planes to conduct it in a safe manner.”

Kaz could barely believe what she was hearing. When the creature came to her in the past after she had found out that she was a Fade Witch, it had tried to kill her and merge their souls into one unholy being, which went on to become an almost common occurrence during her teenage years until it decided that she wasn’t worth the effort for some strange reason. And yet, it now presented itself before her, trying to warn her of a danger that has never been recorded as actually happening in the entire history of magic?

“I ask again, why should I believe you?”

“Little shadow, I fear you already know the answer.” The creature seemed to take a twisted delight in its answer, and added, “My existence is threatened by this just as much as yours. And deny it as you will, we simply cannot do without each other. It would otherwise go against nature.”

With that, the creature disappeared from the mirror, leaving Kaz staring at her reflection as she repeated what it said to herself in her mind. Maybe for once, it spoke the truth, she thought. If there was one thing that Inner Demons were known for, it was self preservation, and something that could threaten the both of them would give it good cause to try and avert disaster.

Deciding to think more on the matter later, Kaz turned and opened her door to find Rajh still waiting in the hall. “About time,” he said. “I vas getting vorried that you vent back to bed or somezhing.”

“Sorry, Rajh,” She replied. “I thought I lost what I was looking for, but found it in my robe pocket.”

“Ha! Very good one, Kaz. Looks like Joran isn’t zhe only one who has his head in zhe clouds.” She smiled at the tiger-man’s response, which was almost enough to lift her mood after encountering the demon. “C’mon ve are running late. I zhink zhe fat one vill be mad if you act like a hypocrite!”

The man in blue stood on a grassy hilltop, his robes fluttering in the wind. In the distance, he saw the dark and stony walls of Skyvern Keep. A tattoo on his bald head flared, but he bore the pain. It was necessary for him to do so now, because he finally knew what the power he spent the last few days tracking down belonged to.

All he had to do now was hope that the Mahjarrat’s minion wouldn’t get in the way this time, though he expected it to do so anyway. The gravetouched being had no doubt carefully planned this trap, and its ego would demand it to be there in order to gloat over a victory. But, the man knew of a way to ensure the power survived. He rummaged through a pocket in his robe, and drew a stone which was beautifully carved with a picture of a warhammer surrounded by fire on the ground. Well, he thought to himself as he tucked the stone safely back into his pocket, here goes nothing.

He spoke a word, which caused a tattoo to flare on the back of his hand, and teleported to the entrance of Skyvern Keep.

Just a quick update for the holiday. As far as chapter 8 is concerned, expect it sometime during the week at the earliest, weekend at the latest. I got lucky with 7 since said sibling happened to do the stupid thing and write the pass code on the back of a paper wad he threw at me earlier in retaliation for the nerf balls o.O

Quick update: next chapter is almost done, but it might not be up until the end of next week in the worst case scenario. Having problems with my word processor saving and loading the damn things, but I think I have most of it figured out now.
