I could see dusk approaching quickly as I looked over my shoulder at the sun decending towards the horizon, casting deep rays of red light all around me. It was Friday night, and I was heading home after a long day of farming on the other side of town. Since dad got sick, we had to move to a new town, and I had to start working as a farmhand to help pay some of the bills. The hours were a bit long, but I didn't mind too much. I didn't really have any friends yet, as I was still new to the town and I spent most of my time at the farm, but I liked working with the horses, and I got to keep $20 every week from my paycheck to spend on what ever I wanted. I usually went down to the pizza parlor and got a slice of pizza and a cola after work, and stopped by the arcade for a few "shoot em ups" and a couple of "save the worlds". Unfortunatly, Saturday was payday, and I was down to my last quarter.

I dragged my feet wearily on the sidewalk as I stared blankly at my long shadow that stretched down the concrete walkway. In the distance I could hear music, beeps, and sound effects emminating from the midway arcade. The sounds grew louder as I approached and I could now see the glowing of lights spilling out into the fast approaching night. My pace increased as I neared the storefront of the arcade, and my heart began to beat at a slightly increased rate. I loved video games with a passion and I could feel my excitement building up as I stepped through the doorway.

Reaching deep into my pocket, I pulled out my one and only quarter and held it tight in my fist. I could feel the cool of the metal in my palm as I scanned around the room looking for a machine that I could play for only a quarter. I began to wander up the aisles, looking for the old retro games that would accept my last bit of money in exchange for some excitement.

All the newer games were too expensive, a dollar for this game, two dollars for that one. I spotted an older machine near the back wall, and as I walked closer I could see it was a space invaders clone type of game. At this point, I could play just about anything, but, as I reached the machine, I could read the price of the game. Fifty cents. Frantically, I looked around the floor, hoping that perhaps someone had dropped a coin somewhere, and that I might be able to play a game after all, but, I knew it was a futile effort.

Discouraged, I lowered my head and began to walk out. But something caught my eye. Something new. Something I had never seen before in the arcade. Neatly placed in the back of the arcade, in a dark corner, were five machines, arranged in an arc, side by side. They were all the same type of machine, but a type that I had never seen before. Well, even if I couldn't play a game myself, I could at least check out this new game for after payday. My heart began to pound a little harder as I hurried towards the corner.

The machines were like nothing I had seen before. They were black in color, and had a painting of a magnificent looking dragon on the side, locked in battle with a mighty warrior and a powerful wizard. "This looks kinda cool..." I thought to myself as I approached it. The controls were quite different than the usual setup of an arcade machine. There was a large trackball in the center with various buttons above it, and a couple of joysticks on either side of the ball. On the right were two keypads, one numeric, and one alphabetic. "Wow... this looks a bit complex... " I thought.

I looked at the one of the screens, and I could see a flyby camera soaring through various 3D enviroments, with creatures wandering among them. At the top of the screen was the title "RuneScape" and in small white letters at the bottom of the screen it was flashing "25 cents for the first 15 minutes, 25 cents for each additional 20 minutes". I was taken back by this. Not only did I find a game that I could play for just a quarter, but I was guaranteed 15 minutes of game time, even if I was terrible at the game.

"Okay, lets see what this game is all about..." I thought to myself as I gave my coin a quick polish before dropping it into the slot. I could hear the coin sliding through the mechanisms before reaching its destination with a "clink!" at the bottom of the storage bin, with the rest of its kind. The machine gave a distinct beep to indicate that it had recieved payment, and the text at the bottom of the screen now flashed "15:00" in white. A menu drawn up on a parchment faded into view in the center of the screen, with various options relating to worlds and graphics, most of which I had no idea about.

There was an input box for a username and a pass-word, neither one I had, so I selected the option to create an account using the trackball. The screen changed, and I was prompted to select a username and pass-word. Using the alphabetic keypad I tried a few usernames, all of which seemed to be in use by other players, according to the machine. After a few minutes of trying different names, I settled on "Nexus Origin".

"I'm gonna run out of time creating this character before I even get a chance to play..." I said beneath my breath as I glanced at the timer at the bottom of the screen. It had not even began to count down. "Well, thats a bonus!" I thought to myself as I continued the registration process. After a few more character customization menus, I looked proudly at my newly created character. "Heheh, kind of looks like me a bit. " I said out loud, quietly, but loud enough for others around me to hear.

"Looks like a noob to me..." came a voice from behind me. Never having heard the word 'noob' before I simply assumed it was some terminology related to the game. Perhaps it had something to do with the type of profession I had selected for the game, or an alignment of a particular God in the game. Whatever it was, I was ready to play, as the game loaded up a new enviroment.

The voice belonged to a skinny blond haired kid who had taken up position beside me on the next machine, and his friend had taken up position on the other side of me. They seemed to have played this game before, as they quickly logged into the game. Glancing over at thier screens I could see them interacting with each other in the game. They were in some sort of a dungeon fighting these giant red devil looking creatures, one of them using a bow and arrows, and the other using a giant spiked sword.

"Just got a rune helm" said the guy to my left and the other responded with "Yeah, I saw that."

"Kinda neat that you can see each other in the game" I mentioned, but the only response I got was "Umm, yeah... pfft. noob."

There was that word again. I still had no idea what it meant, but from the attitude I was getting, I was starting to assume that it was meant to be more of an insult than anything, so I decided not to bother them anymore, and to focus on my own game.

It appeared that I was in some sort of a learning stage of the game, as I was being introduced to what was called 'Tutorial Island'. There were characters there instructing me as to how the game was played, and how to interact with the world around me. I was learning about the different skills in the game, and how to preform simple tasks in the game, such as fishing, woodcutting, and even how to make my own weapons. However, at one point, I must have lost my bearings on the island, as I had become lost, and could not figure out where I needed to go next.

I was hesitant to ask any questions, but, I really had no other choice, so I slowly asked "Umm, where do I go from here?"

"Hahaha, this noob is stuck on Tutorial Island!" laughed the one to my right, and the other one joined in with a few chuckles. "If you cant even finish the tutorial, then you might as well give up on the game now..." he continued as he laughed.

I watched the timer at the bottom of the screen counting down as I frantically clicked around the map, my character running wildly around the island, looking for the flashing yellow arrow that marked my next destination. "Come on, help me out here, I'm running out of time..." I pleaded, but I only recieved harsh laughter from them in response. I let out a deep sigh as dropped my hands by my side, ready to give up, when a deep voice from behind startled me.

"Go south and follow the path into the building." it said. I spun around to see a large figure standing tall behind me. He was wearing a black hoodie, pulled up over his head casting a dark shadow over his face. On the front of his shirt was a large logo that matched one of the symbols that was on the machine.

Following his directions I reached the next stopping point, which was the last portion of the tutorial. I turned back around and smiled at him as I said thanks, to which he replied back "Sure." as he wandered away from the area towards the snack shop on the other side of the arcade.

I was then teleported into a new area. I appeared to be in the courtyard of a large castle, and there were many other people there, all dressed in various clothing and armour, some of which had very deadly looking weapons. People were chatting with each other, some having conversations about random topics, some appeared to be making battle plans of some sort, and some were just rather quiet, preforming random actions, such as dancing and jumping for joy.

It was rather confusing trying to follow what people were actually talking about at first, as the chat seemed to be moving rather rapidly in this box at the bottom of the screen, but I quickly figured out how the chat part of this game seemed to work, so I typed in a quick message using the alphabetic keypad to announce my arrival to the game.

"Hi everybody! I'm Nexus, and I'm brand new to this game." I posted. Quickly, a few of the other people close by responded back with some pleasant salutations. I smiled, as it seemed that there were some rather friendly people in this game. I was fairly intrigued that all these people were all playing the same game, interacting with each other, as I had never played a game of this type before. One rather impressive looking character approached me, dressed all in red armour, with spikes protruding out from his shoulders and chest, and a helm that completely covered his face. He held this demonic looking shield in one hand, with the design of a dragon's head on it, jaws open in a fierce appearing snarl, while in the other hand he held what a appeared to be some kind of spiked whip, waving back and forth as he stood there.

"Wow, thats some cool looking armour!" I typed into chat towards him. "Where can I get stuff like that?" I asked.

"Oh, you wont be able to get anything like this for a while," he responded back, "but if you need some help getting started in the game, feel free to add me to your friends list, and I will be more than happy to help you out".

I smiled again, as it seemed I had actually made my first friend in the game. Sheepishly, I asked had to ask him how the friends list worked, and he happily explained how to add people to the friends list, and how to send them private messages.

"Oh, look, noobie has made a new friend." laughed the guy standing next to me in the arcade, while his friend on the other side responded back with a snort, and a rather insulting "How cute". I was begining to rather despise these two guys, but as I was tired from working all day, and there were two of them, and only one of me, so I held my tongue and decided not to engage in any confrontation with them, after all, I had a new game to play and explore.

I messaged my newly found friend, asking "So, what should I do now? I don't really know how to get started in the game yet".

Quickly he responded back "Well, I'm just waiting for some of my clanmates to get online, so I can help you get started if you like. Wait here for a moment". I gratefully thanked him for being so friendly and helpful, and waited for him to return as he ran off into the castle. He returned, and a message popped up in the chat window, stating that he had requested a trade. I clicked on it, and a new window opened up, and items began to appear in it. Armour, weapons, some kind of magic items, and a bunch of food were offered up.

"I cant pay you for any of this," I sadly replied, "I dont have anything to give you back". I let out a little sigh, ready to decline the trade, but my dispair was quickly lifted as he responded back, telling me that it was not a problem, and that he was more than happy to get me equipped. "Yay!" I posted back.

"Look at this noob, happy to get all this crap gear." the guy to my left laughed as he shoved me with his shoulder. I took a deep breath, as I began to get frustrated with this guy, constantly picking fun at everything I was doing in the game. I just wanted to enjoy this new game, and this guy was starting to ruin it for me.

"You know what? You need to shut it, punk." came this deep voice from behind me. I could see in the reflection of the monitor that the hooded figure had returned from the snack shop, sipping from a can of soda.

"Pfft, whatever." the guy on my left replied, as he intentionally hit me with his shoulder again, and the guy on my right followed with a scoff of his breath.

"You know what? Game's over noobs. Time for you to bounce." the hooded figure behind me said. I glanced at the timer on the screen. I still had 7 minues left of game time, but this guy was rather large, so I dropped my hands to my side and let out a sigh. I really wanted to play this game, but I was not about to get into a physical confrontation over it, after all, it was just a video game, and no matter how much I loved video games, it wasn't worth getting a broken nose over.

I turned to leave, but the hooded figure put his hand on my chest and said "You stay right there". I began to tremble, not knowing what was about to happen next, and clenched my fists tightly. "These punks are done, and you're not going anywhere..." he continued.

"Whatever, I dont think so..." spit back the blonde kid to my left as he spun around to face the hooded figure. His friend spun around as well, and gave him snort and a nose up to the hooded figure. "I'm not leaving 'till I'm done..." he continued, but before he could finish his sentence, the hooded figure punched him square in the chest. Hard. I could hear the deep thud as his fist connected to this guy's ribcage. I was starting to panic a little, and my heart began to race. This isn't what I wanted to get in the middle of tonight, I just wanted to have some fun playing some video games. I could see this guy wince slightly, and clench his jaw as the pain of the punch to the chest began to set in.

"You know, I'm pretty much done here, I'll go" I said quickly, as I again turned to leave, but again, the hooded figure stopped me with his hand on my chest. "Seriously," I continued, "I'm almost out of time here, I'm just going to go..."

"You're not leaving..." he responded back. I began to tremble, and looked towards the door, getting ready to make a run for it. This was it, I thought, time to get out of here before things started to go really bad. My heart was pounding so hard now that I could hear it in my ears. A bead of sweat rolled down the side of my face, and my breathing began to get heavy.
