Then time seemed to slow down to a snail's pace, as the soda can the hooded figure was holding dropped to the floor. It seemed to take forever to fall all the way to the floor, and it sounded like a thousand pound weight as it crashed into the concrete. I could see, in what was almost like slow motion, the hooded figure snap his arms outward, as he grabbed the blond haired kid by the front of his shirt with his left fist, and grabbed the other kid, his rather large hand wrapping almost right around his entire neck. I could hear the kid struggle to breathe. This was getting too much for me. Things were going very wrong, very fast, and I did not want to be in this place anymore. Forget the new game I had found, forget the new friend I had made in the game, I was getting out of there.

I could see the blond haired kid struggling to reach into his pocket for something. Heavy panic began to set in, as I feared he was reaching for some sort of a weapon. I was not about to die over a video game, but I was trapped between these two guys on either side of me, and this large hooded figure in front of me, arms outstretched to either side, restraining both of them, effortlessly it seemed.

I let out an "Argh!" as I ducked under the hooded figure's left arm, making my escape, with plans of sprinting towards the door, and out into the night. I was not about to stop running until I got home, regardless of how far it was to my house. I was getting out of there right then and there. My plans for escape however were abruptly halted, as I came up from under this hooded figures arm, and looked up towards three other large figures. They were all wearing hoodies, pulled up over thier heads, thier faces covered in shadow, like the first hooded figure, all with symbols on the front of thier shirts that matched what was on the machines. My heart dropped. This was it I thought. Things were about to get very rough, and I felt I was about to cry, as my eyes began to water up. I felt more alone in the world than I had ever felt before.

"Please don't hurt me..." I softly pleaded to the three new figures who loomed in front of me. They were all large in comparison to myself, much taller, and two of them much wider in the shoulders, as if they were wearing football equipment. I was about to get severely beaten, and I was trying to stop myself from bursting out crying. I didn't want any of this. I just wanted to play some video games. I was getting ready to drop to my knees and beg for my life. A tear streamed down my cheek and into the side of my mouth, and I could taste the saltiness of my shame as I was about to break out in full tears in front of them all.

"What?" laughed one of the three new hooded figures, "What are you talking about?". He looked at me, deep in the eyes, and could see the fear inside my soul, and the tears now running down both my cheeks. He then looked at what was going on behind me, with the first hooded figure, and the two other kids. "Dereck, Russell, I don't know what kind of crap you're doing in here, but you need to leave. Now." he sternly directed towards the two guys still being held by the first hooded figure.

As the first hooded figure released his grip, the two guys made a mad dash to the entrance of the arcade, and disappeared into the darkness of the night. As I attempted to do the same, the first hooded figure grabbed me by the arm and said "Where you going?"

"Please!" I pleaded with him, as I pulled hard to get away from him, tears still flowing down my cheeks.

"Dave! What the hell are you doing?" demanded to know one of the other hooded figures.

I assumed that Dave was the name of the first hooded figure, and I turned to face him, as he still held my arm. Surprised, as if he had not even noticed what was going on around him while he was engaged with the other two guys who had been in there, he looked me in the face. "Whats wrong?" he asked, puzzled at my tearful expression.

One of the hooded figures pulled the hood down from over thier face, revealing a firey red headed girl with green eyes. She looked younger than the other hooded figures, somewhere around my own age, but she was still was a lot taller than I. "Dave, let him go." she said sternly, as she pulled me towards her. She bent down a little, and wiped the tears from my face with the sleeve of her shirt. "It's okay, you don't have to worry." she said softly, as she wrapped her arms tightly around me. "Now, what the hell is going on?" she demanded to know.

"I just wanted to play some video games..." I muffled into her shirt as I pressed my face into her shoulder.

Dave started to explain, "Look Shannon, he was getting bullied by Russell and Dereck, and I was sick of it. Those two punks need to be shown that they can't just push people around. So I grabbed them up to make sure they weren't going to bully him anymore."

Shannon must be this girl's name, I thought to myself, as she still held me tight in her arms. "Is this true?" she asked me.

"A little bit..." I responded, my face still pressed hard into her shoulder.

"Those two guys really upset you this much?" she asked softly in my ear.

"Well... Dave, I guess... I guess his name is... he... he... I just thought... he said I couldn't leave... things were happening so fast... people were getting punched... and strangled... I just thought... I got scared... I thought... I just... I didn't want to get hurt..." I stuttered out, ready to tear up again.

"Dave, I dont know what the hell you were doing, but look at this poor guy. You've scared the life out of him." Shannon said in a very disapproving tone. "'S*hh, its fine..." she said in my ear as she rubbed my back. "Are you okay now?" she asked. I looked up and gave her a weak smile, and she smiled back. Her smile was like the smile of an angel, a smile that could take you from what was litterally hell, to what was close to heaven.

"I'm... I'm okay," I attempted to bravely stutter back to her.

The two other hooded figures pulled thier hoods down to reveal a guy with short blond hair, and another with longer dark hair. "I'm Chris, and this is Steven" said the blonde guy, as he pointed towards the long dark haired guy, "I guess you know who Dave is, and it looks like you've met Shannon now." he said as he gave a little wink.

"I'm Jimmy" I said back, as I turned around to say hello to everyone else, trying to bravely hide my emotions.

"I think you owe Jimmy here an apology Dave..." said Steven, with a cross look on his face. "Whatever you were trying to do here, you obviously scared the crap out of him. That's not cool."

Dave, still puzzled at what went wrong, apologized. "Dude," he said, "I'm really sorry, I never meant to scare you. I'm sorry you misunderstood my intentions. I wasn't saying you couldn't leave, I was telling you to stay, and play some RuneScape. Just so you know, I've got your back, no matter what happens. If you need anything, anything at all, you just let me know". He pulled his hood down from over his head, his light brown hair spiked randomly, and an apologetic expression on his face.

"I just want to go home," I said, "I just spent my last quarter here, and my game is pretty much over now". I looked back at Shannon, who had this expression of apathy on her face.

"Why don't you stay here with us, hang out with me for a bit?" she asked. As she smiled at me, my heart just warmed up, like a warm blanket had been wrapped around me.

I smiled back and said "Well, I guess I can stay for a little bit, and watch you guys play, maybe I'll learn a bit from watching you guys, since my game is fairly done now."

"Well Dave, looks like his game time has pretty much run out, and I'm sure he's doesn't want to ask, but why don't you shell out a few coins for him?" Chris said to Dave, "Its the least you can do, considering everything."

"For sure, no problem!" exclaimed Dave, as he began to pump quarter after quarter into the machine. All my other emotions of fear started to fade away, excited as the amount of game time began to rise, all the way from my last minute of gametime up to three and a half hours of game time. A big smile grew on my face as I stared at the machine, anticipating the next three and a half hours of gameplay I was now looking forwards to.

"Now, lets go and do some 'Scaping!" announced Shannon, as everyone began to take thier place at thier machines, and started pumping in quarters.

"Thanks!" I eagerly said to Dave, who now, without his hoodie shadowing his face, looked a lot more like a gentle soul than the beast who was about to slay me just moments ago.

As I smiled at him, he smiled back and said "Hey, what are friends for?". It seems like I had just made some new friends out of this whole messed up ordeal.

New friends? I had forgotten all about the friend I had made in the game before all of this happened. As I looked back to the game screen, I could see he had been messaging me for the last few minutes "Hey, you still there?", "Hello?" and "What are you doing?".

"I'm sorry, some stuff just happened over here that I couldn't avoid." I messaged back to him. "If you still have some time, do you think you could still help me out?" I asked him.

"Well, it looks like my clanmates just logged in, so we're probably going to go and do some stuff together, but, if you're on later, maybe we can get together and I can teach you some stuff, if you like?". I was a little disappointed that I was not going to be able to hang out with my new friend in the game, and learn how to do all the cool things in the game that other people seemed to be talking about, but, I understood that he already had plans with them before he even met me, so I said it was no problem, and that I was looking forwards to it.

"Hey," said Dave as he looked at my game screen, "How do you know Ron?"

"Ron?" I asked puzzled.

"Yeah, Sir-DragonHex, the guy you're messaging in the game..." he asked.

"I just met him, he was going to show me around the game for a bit until his clanmates showed up, but, I guess they're on now, so I'll just wander around in the game for a bit, trying to figure this all out." I explained to him.

Shannon looked at me, from her machine beside mine, and smiled as she said "We, are his clanmates, and as Clan leader, I declare you a part of the clan as well. From now on, you're coming with us in the game". I could have exploded with excitement right there on the spot. Not only had I met a new friend in the game, and some new friends in real life, but they were all part of the same group of friends, and now, so was I.

I could hear Steven tapping away on his keypad, sending a mesage to someone. A moment later, a message came from Ron, welcoming me into the clan. "We're going to hit up some dungeons and such, you coming with us?" he then asked. Before I could respond, Shannon was typing up on her keypad, explaining to Ron that I was not a member so they would have to change thier plans to accomodate me.

"Member?" I asked, "I don't understand."

"You have to pay for membership to the game to get most of the cool stuff and cool places." Steven piped up from the other side of the row of machines, "Its cool though, we can do free stuff tonight, so you can join in."

"No," I denied, "You guys already had plans, I'll just do my own stuff for now. Maybe we can do stuff some other time. Its all fine. I don't mind. I learned a little on Tutorial Island. Maybe I can try and figure out how to do the stuff I learned there."

"I dont think so," declared Dave, "We're all friends here, and friends stick together. You're coming with us, and that's that". He pulled out his wallet from his back pocket, and withdrew a few cards of some sort. I could see that they had the same RuneScape logo on the front of them that was on the machines. He flipped through a few of them, then let out an "aha!" as he selected one particular card. "Look out for a sec" he said as he leaned over my machine, clicked a few things and began to enter in the numbers on the back of the card into the game screen. "There," he said, "you've got membership, good for the next 6 months".

I was stunned. I didn't know what to say really. I looked up at him and stuttered a bit in an attempt to thank him for his generosity. He smiled at me and said "Don't worry about it, thats what friends are for. Now, lets go do some 'Scaping!".

For the next four hours, we all went adventuring together, slaying dragons, killing demons, laughing, taking snack breaks at the snack shop, and having the most fun I had experienced since we moved to this town. I leveled up time and time again, and everyone was more than happy to help me out, giving me new weapons, armour and food as I needed it. Never once did any of them complain about the cost of the items I was given, and even though I promised to somehow repay them all for thier kindness and generosity, they all proclaimed that it was not needed, and that friends were there to help each out.

As the night came to an end, we all stood outside the arcade, reminicing about things that had happened during our adventures, and making plans for future adventures in the game. We all got ready to head our different directions towards home for the night. Chris, Dave, and Steven all lived uptown, so they all waved goodbye for the night as they headed out into the darkness. Shannon lived right around the corner, so while I offered to walk her home, she said it wasn't needed, as it was only a 30 second walk, and it was the opposite direction that I had to go in, and I still had a 15 minute walk back to my house.

"I'm really glad we met you Jimmy, we all had a great time tonight." said Shannon. I could see her breath in the cold night air, hanging thick around her head, producing a glowing halo from the streetlights, making her look even more angelic than before.

The cold night air was causing me to shiver, as I was still only wearing the t-shirt that I had changed into after work, but I managed to chatter out a "Me too." back to her. Noticing how cold I looked, she offered to give me her RuneScape hoodie to keep me warm on the walk home. "I can't take this from you..." I said, declining her offer.

"Yes you can," she said, "we're friends, and friends help each other out when they need it. I want you to have it." and she wrapped the warm hoodie around my shivering body. Unexpectedly, she snuck in a quick peck on my cheek before she turned and skipped off down the road towards home.

I stood there for about 5 minutes, with a smile on my face that I had not had for a long time, thinking about everything that had happened that night, before heading off towards home. When I reached my house, and entered the door, my mom was standing there, waiting for me.

"You're late. You missed dinner. Where have you been? Where did you get that shirt? What happened to you tonight?" she demanded to know.

I replied with a single word, "RuneScape." and went upstairs to my room to go to bed, and dream about the new game, and the new friends I had found, with a smile on my face until I was finally asleep.
