"We will win," Daren said firmly when they were back in their own quarters.
"Perhaps," Joshua admitted, "But I think that Xhou is going to tamper with the games somehow. We should be on our guard."
And on that sinister note, they went to bed.
* * * * *
The next morning, Joshua rose bright and early from disturbed dreams of death and loss. He was very nervous in the morning, and he fretted about without his usual charm.
Finally the moment of truth came. The eight went to that area in the jungle, took the armor and weapons, were given their rings, and teleported.
They appeared in a strange base with wooden barricades all around a stone center. A statue of a man holding up a staff was on top of the stone center. His staff began to glow with a purple aura.
Across the way was Xhou's fort, where a similar statue began to glow orange.
Then Joshua felt a peculiar crumbling feeling on his finger. He held up his hand, and gaped in horror at it.
His ring of life was disappearing!
It soon appeared that the other three Champions experienced similar trickery.
"So this is what he has come down to," Joshua grated between his teeth. "He would tamper with our rings."
Then, from four portals in the center between the forts, came hundreds of oddly shaped monsters.
"BEGIN!" A voice roared, and history was made.
"I think we are supposed to destroy Xhou's statue without letting ours get destroyed," Joshua surmised. "And those monsters get in the way."
He then noticed a large bridge in the center, with no rails. It was about two hundred feet long, and three people could walk abreast on it. It was barricaded off from the monsters. Below the bridge was a sickening drop.
It was almost certain that the final battle would take place there.
Joshua, Drake, Talmyr, and Daren charged out into the fields, slashing at limbs and heads and leaving a trail of destruction behind them.
