"We will win," Daren said firmly when they were back in their own quarters.

"Perhaps," Joshua admitted, "But I think that Xhou is going to tamper with the games somehow. We should be on our guard."

And on that sinister note, they went to bed.

* * * * *

The next morning, Joshua rose bright and early from disturbed dreams of death and loss. He was very nervous in the morning, and he fretted about without his usual charm.

Finally the moment of truth came. The eight went to that area in the jungle, took the armor and weapons, were given their rings, and teleported.

They appeared in a strange base with wooden barricades all around a stone center. A statue of a man holding up a staff was on top of the stone center. His staff began to glow with a purple aura.

Across the way was Xhou's fort, where a similar statue began to glow orange.

Then Joshua felt a peculiar crumbling feeling on his finger. He held up his hand, and gaped in horror at it.

His ring of life was disappearing!

It soon appeared that the other three Champions experienced similar trickery.

"So this is what he has come down to," Joshua grated between his teeth. "He would tamper with our rings."

Then, from four portals in the center between the forts, came hundreds of oddly shaped monsters.

"BEGIN!" A voice roared, and history was made.

"I think we are supposed to destroy Xhou's statue without letting ours get destroyed," Joshua surmised. "And those monsters get in the way."

He then noticed a large bridge in the center, with no rails. It was about two hundred feet long, and three people could walk abreast on it. It was barricaded off from the monsters. Below the bridge was a sickening drop.

It was almost certain that the final battle would take place there.

Joshua, Drake, Talmyr, and Daren charged out into the fields, slashing at limbs and heads and leaving a trail of destruction behind them.

From the other side came Xhou, Invfrado, and two Tz-hars, all armed to the teeth and roaring.

Xhou was holding a crossbow in one hand and a sword in the other.

Daren screamed in some unseen anger and ran ahead, running across the bridge. The monsters broke through the barricades, charging onto the bridge.

The eight Champions began to fight not only each other, but the monsters as well. Hundreds of roaring beasts fell to the abyss. Daren seemed to be doing the most damage. His eyes were set and blazing, and his sword was unnaturally fast.

He beat off three monsters and then parried a swing from a Tz-har, stabbed, and kicked the other off the cliff. He then slashed Invfrado off, and roared victory...

Until he suddenly doubled over, howling in pain. Xhou smiled grimly, loading his crossbow.

Joshua screamed in horror as he watched Daren's lifeblood flow away. He dropped to his knees, still weakly slashing at monsters.

Then a second bolt hit him, and he grimaced. His sword clattered weakly out of his grasp.

"NO!!" Joshua screamed in inhumane sadness and hatred. He ran at Xhou, slashing and stabbing with a gusto.

Xhou sneered and drew his crossbow, and without flinching, shot Joshua full in the chest.

Joshua doubled over in pain. His eyes went blurry. His sense of hearing was dimmed. Everything seemed to be in slow motion. Someone was screaming “No!” and pointing. He turned his head dimly to see. He looked at Xhou, who was re-loading his crossbow. Joshua felt that he should do something, but he felt so peaceful…

Then Xhou sneered, and a third crossbow bolt speared through Daren and poked out of his back. Blood burst out, dribbling down the cliff.

Joshua woke up, focusing all of his fear, hatred, and sadness into a tight ball of fury.

Xhou's sneer cut off as Joshua pushed off two other monsters, and stood in front of Xhou. His sword was bloody and raised.

Xhou began to gibber with fear. He raised his sword. Joshua screamed inhumanely and slashed down at Xhou, who tried to parry.

Joshua's throat felt constricted. He was sobbing and growling at the same time. All his hatred of Xhou, from the very beginning, was coming to play.

He forced a smile at Xhou, which made him even more apprehensive.

“Remember when your parents died, Xhou?” Joshua seethed. Xhou’s eyes narrowed. “Remember how you wanted to kill whoever did it?”

Xhou felt something within him become alert at this.

“I killed your parents, Xhou,” Joshua roared.

“What?!” Xhou cried.

But before he could say anything more, without warning, Joshua jumped on Xhou. They rolled around, punching and kicking, until suddenly they both disappeared off the cliff. Xhou screamed, “NOO!” as he fell down to his death.

"NOT JOSHUA TOO!!" Drake sobbed, slashing and kicking. Talmyr's face was contorted with rage as he hammered relentlessly at the enemies.

Then, suddenly, Joshua climbed up onto the bridge again, smiling. His stomach was bleeding, but he looked happy.

He held up Xhou's Ring of Life, and then collapsed weakly.

"Joshua," Daren coughed.

"Don't talk," Joshua said firmly. "It will inflame the wound."

"So what if it does?" Daren smiled faintly, then coughed up blood.

"I am going to get you out of here, Daren," Joshua explained.

"No, Joshua," Daren sighed. "There is no way to save me now."

"No!" Joshua sobbed, tears flowing down his bloody cheeks. "You can't die!"

"I have no choice." Daren tried to smile again, but blood trickled through his teeth again. "Promise me something, Champions," Daren said as strongly as he could.

"What is it?" Drake asked through his veil of tears.

"Win this. For me." And then Daren smiled once more, and a long, slow sigh let out of his lips.

Joshua couldn't remember the next few hours. He was so blinded by his sadness at Daren's tragic death that he could not remember charging through thousands of enemies, destroying the statue, and being teleported home, a dead Daren in his arms. He did not recall the cries of joy turning into howls of sorrow when they saw the mournful happening. And he totally wiped from his mind the hours he spent hacking at the wall, denting his sword and crying in a frustrated rage. He DID remember the next morning, he was back in Varrock. Elyssa was sitting over him, looking more beautiful than ever. But a tear was in her eye.

"Joshua," she cried softly, "You're home."

The funeral for Daren was held a week from then. Joshua had regained his composure, and he was to make a speech.

Anne, his once girlfriend, made the first speech. "I loved Daren with all my heart," she said brokenly. "He was the most honest and sweet man there has ever been. I will always remember him." Then she turned away and cried quietly.

"Truly, it is the mark of a new era," Drake said as strongly as he could, though his voice wavered. "Without Daren, the world will never be the same."

Then Joshua stood up. He looked at the hundreds of sorrowful faces, and began. "Daren was like a brother to me," he said in an iron-hard voice. "Not only was he sweet and nice, but he was funny. He was strong, proud, and solid as rock. Everyone could trust him. But more than ever, he was totally devoted to the cause. He laid his life down for me- and for that, I can never repay him.

"So the way is with us Champions. We live and die, stand praise and anger, and resist trickery and lies. Carol was the first to die. Then it was almost me, and now, it was Daren. I think, wherever he is now, he would be glad to know that Castle Wars WILL find a new Champion, and the Games WILL continue. I think he should know that absolutely nothing, not even death, can stop the Champions."

He drew his sword then, and held it up. "FOR DAREN!" He roared in a voice that shattered windows all throughout Varrock. "FOR THE CHAMPIONS! AND FOR RUNESCAPE!!!"

A resounding cheer echoed through the entire world as each and every man and woman shouted their defiance at anything that dared come in between the Champions.

The End.

Epilogue: Joshua and Elyssa were married in two months, as were Sigea and Talmyr, and, surprisingly, Drake and an Elvish woman named Kayla. The Games continued as they always did. Rah became the new Champion of Castle Wars, and eventually, married Anne.

Joshua and Elyssa had their first baby a year after Daren's death. They decided to name their firstborn son Daren, in honor of the old Champion.

Each month, the Champions met with an ever-growing amount of children to discuss affairs, politics, and the good old days.

Daren was never forgotten, not even when Joshua passed away, Drake followed, and Talmyr and Sigea disappeared into the jungles and never came back. The legend of Xhou was passed down and down each generation, never wavering, as is the spirit of the Champions.

THE END

*Sob* You can now post.

Oh man, reading that again made me cry when Daren died. Poor Daren. I focused more on some parts, as you might notice, and you'll start to wonder what Joshua's past is.

This is without question my favorite story of mine. :( I'm crying at my own story, and I know that sounds weird, but it's true.
