“There are supposed to be two more archers, but they aren’t what I would call reliable. They will come before the battle starts, don’t worry,” he said with obvious dislike to the two archer’s free spirits in his voice.

As he said that, they heard a noise from the stairs. Four boots clattered on stone, and some talking drifted up as well.

They saw two figures walking up the stairs.

One was around eighteen years of age, wearing similar armour to Kai’s, and wielding a large crossbow. The other appeared to be elven. He was similar to the first in terms of age and height, but his hair and eye color, weapons and armour were completely different. He was wearing a green tunic with sectioned dark green metal plates, which had bright green leather covering all the exposed joints. In a sheath around his waist, he had a longsword with a lime green hilt, and in his hand, he held an emerald studded silver bow, which was covered in green, carved runes. He had white hair that was tied in a ponytail, though it bore a small hint of green, and his eyes were green as well.

“Rhys? Ushae?” Arya asked; surprised as she realized who the men were.

“We meet again, as expected.” Rhys said as formally as ever, and bowed slightly to her. He didn’t sound the least bit surprised.

Kai snorted, and then muttered, “Figures.”

Arya looked at him with a harsh look, and then turned back to the two archers who were now greeting Timier.

“It is good that you came, Timier. It will be good to have a healing mage in this battle.” Ushae said in a monotonous tone.

“If you are done chatting, maybe you have the time to remember we are in a war here?” Kai said rather agitated, and then added, “Help yourselves from the extra arrow stack, it’s full of silver tipped ones, in case you spot Xen.”

“Excuse me, I must see to something,” Timier said to Kareel after about an hour, then returned around ten minutes later.

In silence, they waited, for hours. The archers spent their time checking their bows, making sure that the string was not to loose, checking the aim, or testing the bite of their arrows. The mages stood there silently, preparing spells in their heads and making sure that they had the runes they needed.

Midnight drew closer, and they saw a thin line around the horizon, along with some spots in the air. The dots moved faster then the line, and when they came closer, they saw what they were; dragons.

Whatever was in the line was still too far away to be recognized, though they all knew exactly what it was.

At the front, there was The King Black Dragon, each of the three heads roaring with blood****, his great wings turning from up to down in a slow, sure beat. Behind him, there were dozens of black, green, and red dragons.

Arya took one last look at Kashan in the sea of men below, before she readied her bow. She could see him looking at her as well, and between them went a pact of understanding and love.

“So it begins,” Kai said as he took aim on the dragons, along with all the other archers.

“So it begins,” conceded Timier.

When Kashan reached his spot, he saw Horas standing a few yards away, staring into the darkness of the Wilderness.

“Sir? Are you all right?” he asked, but Horas just stood there, showing no response.

“Sir?” Kashan asked again.

Horas suddenly began speaking in a monotonous tone. “Haven’t you ever had the feeling that life is too short? That it*s not worth living because it’s only going to end, and that everything is meaningless? I’ve had that feeling before every battle I’ve ever been to, and this one is no exception.” He spoke slowly, not taking his eyes off the Wilderness.

Kashan had no response to that, and there was silence for a moment.

“Where is Toin?” Horas eventually spoke, tearing his eyes away from the dark plains ahead of them, looking at Kashan.

“He’s not…” he started, but was cut off by a dim voice small a distance away.

“I’m here,” Toin said, speaking low, keeping his head down.

“Good to see you again, my friend. At a long last, we shall be together in battle once more,” Horas said to Toin. He didn’t seem as depressed any more.

“Toin?” Kashan asked in a low, surprised voice. “How did you get off the… you know…?”

Toin didn’t reply, only mumbled something about Timier and the most embarrassing moment of his life.

There was nothing more to speak off, and in silence, they waited, for hours. Most of the men just stood there, silently, staring off into the distance. Some checked the sharpness of their weapons, or the balance. Toin honed his ax, and Kashan just stood there, thinking about how he had gotten there, and why his life had turned out as it had.

Midnight finally came, and the once far away monsters drew closer, and became more recognizable. Though they were too far to do anything yet, they saw several archers preparing to fire, and mages preparing their spells.

Kashan took a last look at Arya as he prepared for the battle. He could see her looking at him as well, and between them went a pact of understanding and love.

“To the death as usual, I presume?” Horas asked absentmindedly as he drew his sword from its sheath; all around them soldiers followed his movement.

“Aye,” Toin conceded as he readied his ax.

End of Chapter 15.

Chapter 16 - The battle begins

The mages had all but extinguished the dragon’s fire-breathing abilities with powerful, accurate water spells, but there were a few which were immune to such hexes. Such as the King Black Dragon.

The warriors on the ground could do little but watch as the hordes of dragons flew over the battlefield, burning warriors or knocking down towers. Kashan saw a red dragon get shot in the eye with an arrow from one of the towers, and fell to the ground with frightening speed. It crashed into a tower as it fell, sending six men, archers and mages, plummeting to their deaths, screaming with fear.

The warriors on the ground were running around, doing their best to avoid the fiery blasts of the dragons. The archers and mages in the towers were taking down dragons all over the battlefield, making them crash to the ground, usually killing a few warriors in the crash. It was an unfortunate sacrifice, but a necessary one.

The King Black Dragon acted as a rally point for the dragons, and for the arrows of the archers. Most of them hit the thick scales or missed, but Kashan saw at least two arrows in his wings, and one flying towards its head from the palace. It suddenly protruded out of its middle head. It roared in pain, and shot a giant ball of fire towards the palace. It was out of range however, and the ball fell to the ground, killing several men in the process.

The dragons flew two rounds over the battlefield, wreaking havoc, and then returned to the main army, with the odd arrow trying to follow them. Kashan saw them flying over the line of zombies, which were now close enough for the warriors to smell the rotting. The dragons’ job was done, for now. They had distracted Varrock’s mages, allowing the zombies to get close.

“Shoot the zombies, you fools!” a commander shouted over the mages, and the order was repeated by other commanders that heard him, bearing this single command over the battlefield in seconds.

Shortly, hundreds of crumble undead spells were flying from the towers, over the warriors and to the zombies. They dropped dead like flies over a fire; just as Kai had predicted.

That was not enough, however, as the seemingly endless lines of zombies relentlessly came closer and closer, ignoring the now twice dead bodies of their fellows. Eventually, the few mages left on the front line from the dragon attack were forced to retreat, most of them going to a tower or onto the wall. Soon, they got into the range for a sword. The warriors were ready to pick up the slack.

The two lines met with full force. It was pandemonium. The bodies of zombies were flying around as they were hacked off by a blade, and the skin of men was pierced by the zombies’ unruly teeth. Archers sent arrows flying everywhere where they saw a sure shot, and mages cast crumble undead spells on anything they saw moving, as they could not hurt a living being with that spell. There seemed to be no end to the zombies, and the men’s morale was not going strong. The battle went on for almost ten minutes, time that might as well be hours when in combat, but the zombies finally stopped flowing to the battlefield. What came up behind them, however, was no better.

Every beast known to inhabit the Wilderness seemed to have stopped what it was doing to join in this battle. Demons were guarding each flank, and dragons hovered above, the King Black Dragon larger then any, a frightening spot in the sky.

In the chaotic formation, there were, among many others, hellhounds, rising above others wherever they were, Zamorakian mages, wearing red robes of their chosen god, holding fireballs in their hands. There were also ice giants, holding gigantic swords of ice, ready to remove any head that stood in their way, and black knights filled in any possible blank. There were others, too, but they were too numerous to mention.

In the midst of it all, Kashan could see a gigantic greater demon, at least twice as big as any normal one. It was roaring to the skies as it flapped its wings, taking it high to the sky among the dragons. That demon, however, was not what worried Kashan the most.

On a large boulder stood Xen.

His fur was indeed black as shadow, and his blades the same color. He howled at the moon, and several of Varrock’s soldiers turned and ran at the sound. The howl embodied hatred, blood****, and everything that Zamorak stood for. Yet Xen wasn’t finished.

His eyes burned even brighter, reminding Kashan of the hellhounds. He readied his daggers and raced down the hill, nothing but a black streak as he commanded those under him to follow.

They clashed with the warriors of Varrock with amazing force. Blades were broken, shields were shattered, arrows ruined and spells crashed. The mages had now switched to other spells then crumble undead, and a wide variety of spells cleaved the air.

Xen was a blur, blades invisible against the night as he struck again and again. At least ten men fell against his onslaught, and he took not even a scratch. Nothing could touch him; not the fastest blade, or the swiftest arrow.

~~~~
The battle lasted for hours. Almost a half an hour into it, Kashan noticed that the colossal greater demon he had seen before was giving orders to the others.
“To kill a serpent, you must take off its head,” Kashan thought, and started twirling throwing knives into the air towards the demon.
Kashan had around a dozen of them, originally, and threw half of them to the demon. Five of them hit their target, which was astonishing, given that he had never thrown one before and that the range was almost seventy-five yards, straight up. One of the knives hit his left sole, another hit his long, lumbering arm, and three hit him in the chest, as he was at a slight angle in the air.
He looked down at this annoyance, and saw Kashan, standing still amidst all the chaos, looking up with a slight grin. Then he felt a sudden pain in the back of his head. The knife that had missed had flown by, and fallen back to him.
He roared, and dropped to the ground, stopping himself only inches from the ground.
“Foolish human! Do you not know who I am? I am Chronozon, the blood demon. You can’t possibly kill me, no warrior can!” as he said that, he swung his arm with surprising speed at Kashan, who just managed to dodge. His arm kept going, however, and hit a fire giant in the chest, producing a strange crushing sound as the giant limped to the ground.
Kashan retaliated, and swung himself at his head like an arrow, hands held out for the impact. It was a perfect hit. His claws protruded through the back of Chronozon’s head, and he fell down.
Kashan turned around, ready to fight a pack of chaos dwarves that stood right behind him, maces held out high. He suddenly jumped to the right, even though he didn’t know why. He found out soon enough.
Behind him stood Chronozon, furious that his attack had missed. Kashan was filled with desperation.
“He should be dead! I pierced through his head!” He thought in fear, as he dodged another blow, and then another.
~~~~

“Timier! He’s fighting Chronozon! He doesn’t know, Timier!” Arya shouted to Timier as she watched Kashan dodge, blow after blow. It was quite a spectacular sight, really, as he was also dodging attacks from the creatures around him at the same time as he was slashing, and slicing at the demon in front of him, but to no avail. Chronozon simply regenerated every time he should have died.

Timier looked towards Kashan, and his face turned to that of horror and fear

“That fool! He needs a mage!” Timier snapped, more to himself then anyone else. He ordered a group of mages to cast the four element blast spells, and they reacted with astonishing speed.

Kashan was hard pressed. He was dodging and attacking faster then he had ever before, but every time he got what seemed to be a fatal attack, the demon stood back up, ready for a new strike.

Suddenly, four wisps of light came from the air, and fell on Chronozon. One was white, one was blue, one was green, and the last was red. Chronozon screamed in anguish, as he made a last hit towards Kashan, and flew into the air.

Kashan didn’t know why, but Chronozon was suddenly scared. He threw one of his last throwing knives at him, hitting him square in the middle of his stomach. He doubled over, and crashed to the ground. The impact didn’t kill him, though, as he was not even forty feet off the ground.

He rose up, prepared to fight to the death, even with the bleeding wound on his stomach. He didn’t get that chance, though, as Kashan immediately threw another knife at him, this one going between his eyes.

A demon’s skull is thicker than that of a human’s, and didn’t kill him. It gave Kashan ample time, however, and he threw himself at him again, as he had when he had first returned to the ground. This time he died permanently.

This victory was a big morale boost for Varrock’s troops, as Chronozon had been one of the Wilderness* highest-ranking generals.

The good people of Varrock fought valiantly. However, they were not enough of a match for the hordes of the Wilderness, even without the ruling of Chronozon, and were forced to give ground.

The booming voice of Reol was suddenly sounded over the fighting. “Retreat to the wall! Retreat!”

~~~~
“What is he doing? We agreed not to do that!” Kai asked the air angrily as he noticed Reol signalling for the troops to retreat.
Timier sighed. “Some do not heed reason. He is only doing what he thinks best for his troops, even though it will probably be their doom.”
They saw the troops below retreat. Archers and mages going on the wall, warriors behind it. Then they saw it. At the end of the horizon, they saw what trump the Wilderness had in store.
The Chaos Elemental had turned from the deep Wilderness to take part in the destruction of Varrock.
The wall suddenly became very odd. Individual bricks began teleporting away in a purple bubble, appearing behind the wall itself, in front of it or even above it. It did not take long for the wild creatures of the Wilderness to break through the wall, which was now almost in pieces.
The Wilderness was inside Varrock.
End of Chapter 16.
Chapter 17 - Chaos in Varrock
The majority of Varrock’s mages and archers died with the wall, and now it was almost purely the warriors that held the Wilderness’ forces at bay.
They were not enough, and were slowly giving ground, towards the centre of town.
The battle was in the palace garden, now, and the only mages or archers left in Varrock’s troops were the ones on the palace top.
The Chaos Elemental was wreaking havoc, sending out powerful spells that left small craters where they hit. Anyone that came within striking range with it was instantly killed, as it acted like a rally point for the hordes that once inhabited the Wilderness. Any spell or arrow that was shot at it got teleported away with a different trajectory, sometimes hitting a warrior, sometimes a chaos dwarf, and sometimes going straight back at the palace, forcing the people on top to dodge their own missiles.
Kashan was fighting a hellhound, alongside Toin. When the battle had started, Toin had immediately gotten back in a good mood, the incident at the inn forgotten.
He was swinging his ax wildly, yet strategically. It seemed as though he never needed to stop, all his strikes were in the same continuous motion. He took down one, two of the hellhounds legs, tore a rip in a nearby chaos dwarf’s chest, and then the third leg.
The hellhound toppled over, allowing Toin to slash at his neck, severing an artery.
Kashan decided that he needed no help, and turned to help Reol, who was fighting some black knights. Watching him fight was like a display that one would pay for seeing, rather then notice in a battle. He seemed to have at least three whips, it flicked so fast, and his shield seemed to be a dome around him, rather then a four by two piece of metal.
Xen suddenly appeared behind him.
