Jaden had entered a very simple room. It was purely white in colour, the only other interesting features of it being the unimpressive door opposite him. Jaden contemplated turning back but considered his current circumstance to his previous, back through the door. With a yawn, Jaden adjusted his cap and sat down in a corner of the room. Such strenuous activities had taken their toll on Jaden's sleep deprived body and a quick power-nap was required for him to keep going. Before he drifted off into dreamland however, he cast a quick fire strike spell upon the doorknob of the door he had entered. It instantly glowed a bright red, indicating that it would severely scald anyone who came in contact with it. As it was a magic flame, it would burn for hours.
Satisfied with the security of the room, Jaden drooped his eyes and prepared to sleep.

"Are you alright?" Natalie asked the limping Robert.
Initially, his response was a woebegone groan, but added afterwards "I'm fine."
Satisfied with the circumstances, Robert and Natalie regarded their surroundings with awe. Somehow, they were back in the ruins that was once Edgeville. If not for the out-of-place door floating behind them on the Edgeville bridge, Robert and Natalie could have mistaken it for the real thing.
"Is this some kind of illusion?" said Robert and he ran over to inspect the surreal environment they were amidst. As he went to touch some of the rubble, it quavered strangely and Robert saw his hand pass through it like water.
"That's weird. I guess this is just an illusion." Robert concluded. "But why is it here?"
"Observation?" Natalie suggested.
Robert mulled it over but didn't comment on Natalie's theory. He looked around and noticed another door identical to the one they came through floating before the Monastery.

"Hey Natalie." Robert intended to show her the door but her attention was elsewhere. She was standing at the Wilderness Ditch and looking out into the distance. Robert approached her and tapped her on the shoulder.
"What are you doing?" he inquired.
Instead of answering, Natalie stuck out her hand only to have it stop before the boundary of the ditch. Like the rubble before, the air seemed to quaver where her hand was but instead of her hand passing through it, the air seemed to repel her. Curious, Robert pressed his hand against the barrier. It was like touching a wall composed of Jelly monsters and as cold as a winter's breeze.
A thought formed in Robert's head and he dashed off to the river where another strange barrier was found. He followed it and came to the conclusion that it ran the exact same perimeter as the invisible wall of heat in the real Edgeville extended. He returned to Natalie with his findings and asked for her thoughts.
"I don't know." she stated.
"Well, what do you think we should do now?"
"I don't know."
"Should we go back the way we came or through the new door?"
Natalie didn't answer, just turned her head aside and looked out into The Wilderness again. When Robert moved closer to ask her more questions, he was surprised to see tears streaming from her eyes.
"Hey, wha-?"
Natalie suddenly started sobbing deeply and wrapped her arms around Robert. Her glasses clattered to the ground because of her sudden movements and her tears splashed on them momentarily after. She buried her head in Robert's chest and wailed with intensity to rival Edward's strident blubbering.
Not knowing what to do, Robert just held her protectively close and waited for her to stop crying.

For the first time in ten years, Georgia displayed a shred of fear.
The room was a manifestation of everything vile and repulsive; a visual nightmare.

The wall behind her was simply red in colour and hardly frightening at all. It was the rest of the room that froze Georgia's blood. Blood seeped down the walls of the room like a grisly waterfall and flooded the floor up to Georgia's ankles. Large, blood-stained spikes jutted out from numerous places in the room, the ones on the ceiling dripping like gruesome stalactites. Trees that resembled spines sprouted from the wall and ceiling. Every now and then a branch would snap and land with a sickening splash in the blood. It seemed there had been a normal room here once as evidenced from the presence of regular furniture like tables and chairs. Now they were smashed and shattered, splattered with the lurid red substance. To make the situation more dire, the room was immense and easily exceeded the size of the mansion from an outside view.
But worst of all were the 'things'.
They twisted themselves out of the walls, floor and ceiling; demented and disfigured creatures with claws larger than Georgia's sword and significantly more intimidating. They varied in shape and size, some had four arms, some only had one; some had blades protruding from various points on their distorted bodies and some were adorned with bulbous, blood filled sores. They all shared one thing in common and that was their eyes. All of their huge eyes were a sinister crimson and lacked any pupil or iris. They all seemed to be rooted to the room, lunging savagely towards Georgia when she looked at them but unable to move from their position.
"Wha-what the hell is this?" Georgia stammered. She turned around to inspect the door behind her but the blades piercing it told her that she couldn't go back that way.
Anyone else in this circumstance would have screamed, wildly beat against the door until it opened, gone insane or even killed themselves upon witnessing such a macabre sight. But Georgia, bravest girl in all of Misthalin, chose to prevail.

"Guess I gotta go this way," she said to herself. "Maybe there's a door on the other side of the room..."
She took four steps into the room when suddenly fell down under the pool of blood. She hastily swam up and found out that the pool varied in depth randomly. Right now she was in a deep section and would need to swim through the gore to get through.
"Ugh, this is gonna be gross," she sighed. "And now it's in my hai-"
Something cold and strong gripped Georgia's leg and began to pull her under with great force. With a startled cry, Georgia submerged.

~Chapter XIX~
Veronica had been dreaming of the past when Edward roughly shook her awake. Reluctantly, she opened her eyes and saw the pale, terror stricken face of her young companion.
"Are you okay?" he inquired.
Veronica nodded and sat up, averting her eyes from the gruesome ceiling decorations. She rubbed her eyes and stood up but still kept her gaze focused on the floor.
"I'm scared, what should we do?" trembled Edward.
"I don't know." Veronica mumbled. She didn't want to be the one with responsibility, she just wanted to go home to her family and friends.
"It looks like we only have one way to go anyway. We should try and find a way out of here." Edward suggested.
Veronica nodded and began moving forward towards the end of the hall. She felt a sudden grip at her hand and jumped, only to find out it was Edward clutching at her like he would for a teddy bear. Veronica responded in kind and held his hand until they reached the end of the hallway.
Edward peered around the corner and said "It's okay, there's just another door."
The two approached the door and hesitantly twisted the handle. Edward was the first to go in but immediately rushed back in.
"Is it bad?" Veronica queried. Edward nodded madly.
"But is there any...?"
Edward shook his head and said "No blood, but..."
"We'll have to stomach it," she groaned. "We've got nowhere else to go."
Edward grimaced and swallowed, then held the door open for Veronica to enter.
Inside was a dining room, large and exquisite with a table grand enough to seat twelve people on each side and two at each head. But like the hallway before, this luxurious and magnificent room had been spoilt by sickening abominations. There were picture frames around the room but instead of holding marvelous, expensive paintings the frames bore various human internal organs.

They had been artistically arranged into images depicting various scenes and figures. The one closest to Veronica and Edward portrayed a pair of men locked in combat, each man composed of a heart for a body, intestines for the limbs and a slice of brain for the head. They stood on a couple of stomachs and did battle with swords made of teeth.
Like the previous room, mutilated corpses hung from the ceiling as lamps which illuminated the room with a eerie, reddish hue.
Veronica swallowed deeply and tried to focus on the less vulgar portions of the room as she led Edward around the table and towards the other side of the room. There she could see a door which would hopefully lead somewhere less gory.
"V-veronica?" Edward stammered whilst shivering wildly.
"Yes?"
"Who did this?"
"I'd assume Evan did-"
"But why? And who did he-gulp-who did he use?"
Veronica moaned and tried to ignore Edward's question, though he had raised a curious and worrying thought.
They reached the doorway and hastily entered through it. They breathed a sigh of relief when they found this room utterly untouched and as pristine clean as the foyer had been.
It was a bedroom with one bed, a desk and a window; and it was considerably smaller than the previous space. The desk itself was large enough however, to expand over the right wall of the room. The bed was oddly unimpressive in contrast to the rest of the estate. Indeed, the entire room seemed out of place.
Edward trotted over to the window on the left wall and peered out. He had a view of an expansive ocean, though its lack of any motion and grey skies made it lifeless and intimidating.
Veronica had travelled over to the desk and inspected its contents. It had four drawers as the supports, a small bookcase on the end furthest from the door they entered and an assortment of items scattered about it. Perfectly aligned at the centre of it all was a meagre little chair, small enough for Edward to sit in comfortably.

Veronica decided to inspect the bookcase but there wasn't much among them. 'Cooking for the family', 'Chess for beginners', a romantic fiction novel and a bestiary on the monsters of The Wilderness were some of the titles Veronica examined but there wasn't much beyond that.
"That's weird..." Veronica murmured.
"What?" inquired Edward as he seated himself at the desk.
"Why would a psychotic zombie, ghost thing have all of these normal, innocent books?"
Edward shrugged and started tinkering with the objects littered about the desk. There were numerous toys and models lying about, which Edward played with briefly. Veronica commenced her search through the drawers and found a few items of note. In the first drawer was another book, different from the others as it had no cover and was in incredibly poor condition. The second and third drawers held no value but the final contained a tiny painting. It was Evan, standing in between a male and a female adult. They were in front of a sign that said 'Welcome to Edgeville' that stood before a tree sapling.
"Hey Edward, have a look at this."
Veronica gestured towards the painting, which Edward stared at with interest.
"That must have been when he was alive."
"Yeah, when he had no power..."
"What's in the book?"
Veronica flipped it open to the first page and read its contents aloud.
"Hi! I am Evan Edgevil. I'm ten years old and live with my mummy and daddy. A few days ago, Daddy and his friends decided they were going to build a town where we could all live. To celebrate, daddy gave me this book and I get to write down everything that happens! Mummy says its a really important job and I should feel proud that daddy gave it to me. I do.
"So I'll start with today. A few days ago, daddy and his friends got together and said 'we're going to build a town!' So we walked around for a while and finally found a place to start. Since daddy made the decision, we got to name the town after ourselves! Yay!

It's going to be called Edgeville, but with an extra l and e so it looks official. After that, daddy sent some people into the town next door so they could get some stuff to build with! There's also this big hole in the ground we need to cover up, so he sent for some of that stuff too. I wonder what's in that hole? Maybe I'll have a look before they fill it up. Anyway, mummy's calling me to do something so I have to go. I'll write more the next time something else happens."
Veronica flipped ahead a few pages and read snippets to herself but most of it was just childish nonsense.
"So this was his diary." Edward concluded.
"Must have been. But he seems so different in here then he does now." Veronica stated.
"What's at the very end of the diary? Maybe that'll tell us."
Veronica turned to the last entry in the ancient text but was disappointed to see that it was no different to the rest of the book. It described Evan's day when the construction of the bank had been completed and how nice he thought the church looked today.
"It's useless," she declared. "But maybe there's something else in the other drawers over here."
She approached the row of cabinets on the opposite side of the room and initiated her rummaging. The first three compartments contained absolutely nothing. It was the fourth drawer that contained the treasure.
Veronica lifted the immaculately clean and ostentatious book from its chest and read the cover to Edward.
"Diary of Evan Edgevil. Death 'till Present".
"Ah, so he kept a diary even after he died. What's it say?"
Veronica opened the extravagant journal with care and began reading the first page.
But after the first sentence, her skin had gone pale and her eyes widened in sheer terror.

~Chapter XX~
Natalie didn't stop crying for quite some time. When she finally did, she held close to Robert for a moment and then bent down to retrieve her glasses.
"We should keep moving." she said in her usual tone, as if nothing had happened.
"Wai-hold on!" Robert interjected. "What was that about? I've never seen you so upset."
Natalie looked towards the distant sky of the false realm. It didn't exist, but Natalie still wondered what was out there.
"I miss Tristan," she said softly. "And everyone else. I'm really scared and don't want to lose any more of my loved ones."
She turned to him, her expression awash with desperation.
"Life shouldn't be taken. Nobody deserves to die...Robert, will you protect me? And yourself? And all our other friends? Please?"
Robert stood close to her.
"With you helping me, I can keep that promise."
Natalie turned faced the doorway opposite them and repeated her statement: "We should keep moving."
"Right, let's go."
Robert led the way, his hands jammed in his pockets with runes at the ready. He cautiously opened the door and peered through. He scowled, but headed in regardless.
The inside was a cramped and confined room. The walls were adorned with a variety of gore much like the areas of the house visited by Veronica and Edward, only this room hadn't been so neatly arranged. There was only one corpse-lantern dangling in the centre of the room and the rest of the 'decorations' were messily strewn about the walls. In the centre of the room was a small table with two chairs on each end and on the opposing end of the space was another door.
"Let's not waste time. We should see if there are any stairs that lead to the lower levels. Then we mi-"
"The stairwell is through this entrance." A sinisterly familiar voice announced from behind the other door. Robert whipped out his runes as the door slowly swung ajar but Evan didn't respond with any hostility.
"How did you get there?" Robert inquired. "You were behind us."

"This is my house," Evan responded. "It will do as I command."
"You haven't attacked yet so that means you want something."
"Indeed." he said, taking a step into the room. Robert could see him moving something out from behind his back and prepared to fire but stopped when he saw what it was.
"A chess board? You want to play a game of chess?" Robert asked perplexedly.
"Quite so. Here and now." was Evan's curt response.
"Why?"
"I'm bored. I also believe you and I could profit from this experience."
"How so?"
"We could learn more about each other," he set the board down on the table and produced a bag of pieces from his pocket. "For every piece you capture, I will relinquish the honest answer to any inquiry you may possess. The same will apply for you."
"Is that it?"
"Yes."
"And if I say no?"
"Then I will add another stake to the game."
Natalie screamed and was suddenly seized by a pair of rotten arms protruding from the wall. Robert spun and prepared to incinerate the limbs when a blade shot up from the ground and stopped a mere centimetre from Natalie's throat.
"This game's victor will have the honour of leaving with all precious items they entered with," Evan explained. "You win and you may continue further into my abode with Miss Hammond. I win and I will be leaving with my chess set."
"So if I checkmate you first all you lose is the board and if I lose I lose Natalie?"
"Precisely. If you choose not to participate however, I will treat it as a forfeit."
"You're a monster." Robert snarled as he sat at the table.
"Good. Now then, you may choose which side you wish to play as."
Robert though about it momentarily but then chose to utilise his turn priority as the white side.
"I understand you know how to play?"
"That's right."
"Then make your first move."
Robert stole a glance back at Natalie, who looked at him with an unfazed expression. She mouthed the word 'win' before he turned back around. Robert studied the board intently.
