Millie was the light in everyone’s day. She was bubbly and cute and talked to anyone. Almost everyone liked her and she made friends with as many people as possible. Whenever the guards or workers weren’t around she would talk about escaping the lab. It made everyone hopeful, because she was always working on a plan to get out, and Millie promised everyone she would get out someday, and then she’d find a way to get them all out. After she disappeared, no one knew what to do anymore.

Millie had done her plan to escape – she had taken five of her closest and most powerful friends and forced her way into the forbidden wing. Millie believed they could get out of the lab this way and reach the surface. She was wrong. After all six of them were reported missing for a day, Millie suddenly reappeared out of the forbidden wing – alone. She barely spoke about what happened, and tried to pretend to be her old self.

After that, Millie was taken to the research wing for a day for some kind of punishment. Very few people saw her on her way back to her room, but the rumors spread that she was in really bad shape. She stayed in her room for an entire week afterward, but then on the eighth day was reported missing again. No one saw her again after that. A month went by.

Everything settled down again in the lab. People got used to missing Millie and her friends, and people got used to being hopeless again. Every day forced to train their powers, but watched closely by android guards and scientists, and punished harshly if they step out of line. There’s plenty of nothing to do, and every day feels a lot like the last one.

You can’t remember how long you’ve been here. You just remember that one day as a teenager you discovered a magic power, and then suddenly you were captured and woke up in this place. It’s a sprawling containment facility with no contact with the outside world.

You’re surrounded by others like you, and all you can do is what you’re told. You don’t know what all the training is for, you don’t know if they’ll ever let you go, and all you know about the outside world is that you’re told it’s not for you.

You can walk freely in the lab, but if you break the rules or cause problems you’ll get in trouble. Getting in trouble gets you locked in your room. If you get caught too many times or do something serious you can face a more serious punishments. Some subjects get brought to the research wing to be used in experiments, and you’ll go here a lot if you act out too much. If you break the rules too many times you could get sent to the forbidden wing. No one knows what’s in the forbidden wing, but no one ever comes back from there.

The rules are enforced by a team of androids armed with stunguns and different tools to apprehend subjects who misuse their powers or act up. There is an endless supply of androids from the production wing since they are easy to fabricate. The head of security is a huge man in a robotic suit known as Mr. Shocker. He has a powerful exo-skeleton which emits electricity and will stun you if you touch it. He can also cast bolts of electricity to catch subjects at a distance. No one has ever beat him before, and it’s scary if he’s around.

The subjects have to spend time training almost every day in the training room to get better at using their powers. The lab enforcers in the training room push the subjects to improve, and track their progress. If you do really well, you might be rewarded with bonus allowance. Allowance is currency you can use in different parts of the lab to buy better food or different things for your room. The other way to get it is by taking courses in the academy, or sometimes lab workers will give out extra allowance to subjects to help them with random odd jobs.

Life isn’t horrible in the lab as long as you follow the rules... but is this how you want to live?

Welcome to Life in The Lab! This is a thread where we play superhumans locked in a secret laboratory. Ever since you discovered your power you’ve been trapped here, forced to train and live life by their rules or else! Those who have tried to escape have disappeared or worse, and now the most popular girl in the lab – Millie – has joined them, taking away the last hope for a lot of us. What will you do now? Will you try to figure out what happened to Millie? Will you try to escape like she did? Or will you accept your new life here and just try to get by? Maybe something else entirely? That’s all up to you!

THE LABYRINTH

Another name for the facility that usually gets shortened to “The Lab.” It’s a massive underground facility containing living quarters and all the amenities you could want. There are wide open corridors and vast environment chambers that look like pieces of the outside world. The main corridor is called Main Street and looks similar to a shopping mall layout. There’s a huge cafeteria with all kinds of food available and all different kinds of seating. Everything in the mall area costs allowance, and without any allowance you can only get very bland and basic food.

There are four giant environment chambers in the main part of the lab which are open to the subjects. One is a big open field with small hills and a slight artificial breeze. The walls and ceiling are made up of seamless display panels that project a sunny sky with small clouds and the weather settings in the room can change. The second environment is the academy and on the inside it is like a really upscale school with all kinds of classrooms and facilities. The third room is a massive gym with room for all different sports and with all the equipment for them. The fourth room is the training room which has moveable walls and floors to transform into different layouts to simulate different situations. This room is almost indestructible and its where the subjects train their powers. It also has a full armory to use for combat training or sparring.

On the outer layers of the lab are the living quarters for the subjects. They each get a tiny 10x10 room with a bed, a toilet, and a wardrobe. The basic rooms have cement or metal walls on three sides, with a sliding glass door as the fourth wall. The glass is virtually indestructible, and the doors can be locked down by lab workers either remotely or with a panel next to the door.

Rooms can be upgraded or have furniture added if the person who lives there does well with their training. The first upgrade is usually a curtain for privacy. Everyone’s basic wardrobe is filled with simple clothes in solid colors, and anything extra costs allowance.

All of this makes up the main wing.

The other four wings are separated by heavily monitored security checkpoints with massive doors that cannot be broken down – except for the forbidden wing which has the same massive doors, but no checkpoint since it is not visited.

THE ADMINISTRATIVE WING

This is where the lab workers live and work when they aren’t dealing directly with subjects in the main wing. Subjects are not allowed in the administrative wing, and no one knows what it’s like in there.

THE RESEARCH WING

Where all the experiments and research happens. There are several laboratories and facilities here for all kinds of scientific procedures, but most of it is off limits to subjects. Subjects sometimes get brought here for direct experimentation, but they aren’t allowed to roam freely and are only brought in if restrained or escorted. A lot of subjects that get taken to the research wing don’t come back, and the ones that do are never the same. It’s a horrible place and you’re lucky if you don’t remember going there.

THE PRODUCTION WING

This is where all of the food and resources are made. It’s mostly automated. Subjects aren’t allowed in here and most lab workers aren’t either unless they are directly involved in production. This is where the generators, water main, ventilation, filtration, farming, and fabricators are located. The fabricators are advanced forms of 3d printing that can create almost anything. This is how most non-food items are supplied to the lab.

THE FORBIDDEN WING

Also known as “the place where the walls wail.” It’s said to be a horrific nightmare place where subjects who don’t follow the rules get exiled to. Millie is the only one who ever came back from the forbidden wing, but she would never talk much about it when she was around. It is closed off with a massive security door same as the other wings, and no one knows how it could be opened without clearance.

THE SCIENTISTS

The entire lab is controlled by someone called “The Director” who is never seen and doesn’t speak directly to the subjects in any way. The lab is run by workers who have different jobs for each different sector in the facility. Most of the lab workers seem like scientists or scholars even if they’re doing simple work. They all have different levels of clearance and you need a separate clearance to get to each of the different wings. Workers with clearance for more than one wing are usually higher rank, but subjects don’t know the whole power structure or chain of command.

The highest rank worker that subjects see is a woman called The Mayor who is in charge of The Main Wing where subjects are kept. The other wings of the facility each have different heads. Staff members of the facility are protected by the android guards, and are almost never out of sight of them. The Mayor is usually escorted by Mr. Shocker himself when she’s out in the facility.

Subjects have to listen to lab workers, and if they don’t do what they’re told they could face punishment. If you resist or act violent you’ll be detained by the androids. If you disobey nonviolently you’ll get sentenced to “time-out” being locked in your room. The lab workers aren’t all evil, but most of them look at subjects like objects for their research and don’t treat them like people.
