Ember awoke to the stomping of hooves above her. That sound was like a rooster crowing, it was her wake up call that the sun had broke through the darkness. Rolling over, Ember crawled her way out from underneath the old stable. Once out, she pushed herself up off the ground and stretched. Looking around, she began taking in the sight of the now becoming busy city. She had to watch herself out there, people were greedy and mean. Life here wasn’t easy for anyone.

Ember slowly began to walk, hiding behind wagons as trying not to be seen. This was the easiest way to spot someone with food, which is what she stole most of the time. It was her only way of survival.

Scanning the busy street, Ember caught glimpse of a man. He looked like he was trading something with a street merchant. “Bows my chance” she whispered to herself. The man was busy and his coin bag was hanging on his waste. Inhaling a deep breath, Ember sprinted out from behind the wagon. Reaching out she grabbed the coin bag only to be pulled down as though someone closed lined her. The man had the coin bag tied extra well.

Ember hit the ground hard, knocking the breath out from her. Shaking her head, she gazed up, meeting the eyes of the man.

((In stoping there so if someone wants to be the man, they can create who he is and jump in))

Name- Kibou Matsuzaka
Age- 37
Race- Human

Description- 6’0”, 190 lbs., short black hair, bearded, dark brown eyes, muscular build, noble look.

His mighty o-dachi is of great length, power, leverage and cutting potential, capable of dividing a man apart, and even disemboweling a horse in a single stroke. The o-dachi is so immense, it can also be used as a short polearm. He also has a sheathed katana, wakizashi, and tachi. He can also use yumi and daiyku, as archery is part of samurai training, however, he currently does not have a bow.

His armour consists of o-yoroi with a jinbaori (surcoat worn over armour) and large shoulder guards, an anachronistic feature for samurai armour. Although not as solidly armoured as plated knights, o-yoroi is nevertheless a good balance of protection and adaptability, allowing samurai to climb trees and mountains, swim across rivers and lakes, and serve as flexible, good armour.

Kibou fully equipped, swinging his o-dachi against soldiers:

Magical ability- Kibou’s intense meditation beyond the portal increases his physical and mental prowess, enabling him to perform superhuman feats of martial arts.

History- Kibou is a kensei, meaning ‘sword-saint’. He spent his life in strict meditation, training, and war. Like many samurai, Kibou would wander the land to seek out worthy foes to fight. Having survived dozens of duels and many battles, he is an experienced, knowledgeable warrior. Kibou hails from a faraway land of marshes and forests, well beyond Melendar.

Name: Veliaf
Age: 404
Race: Vampire

Description: Veliaf stands at six foot five, with a pale complexion and handsome angular features. His hair is a midnight black, and his eyes are a dark blue. Moving down to the rest of his body, he has a slim agile build, but is still capable of feats of strength when necessary.

Magical ability: First and foremost, as a Vampire, Veliaf does not age. Secondly, he also possesses the ability to regenerate if struck, though if he loses a limb or a head he must then locate the missing appendage if he wants to reattach it (you can prevent him from doing this by burning the stump.) He is also invulnerable to most conventional methods of murder. Then there is the fact that he was both quicker and stronger than the average human, able to outrun or outmatch even the best of them in feats of strength or speed.

As for his other powers, he is capable of invisibility, to shapeshifting into a bat, and seeing in the darkness. He also possesses some low level mind control - he can make suggestions which the weak-minded feel compelled to follow, though these can be resisted if the victim has enough willpower or the 'suggestion' goes too far.

There are some downsides, however. He has to drink blood in order to fuel his powers. And he does have plenty of weaknesses. Silver, garlic, and holy water will burn him to the touch. A piece of silver or wood to the heart will kill him instantly, while ingesting garlic or holy water will burn him from the inside and potentially kill him if he consumes enough. Sunlight is extremely uncomfortable for him, but not fatal. Fire can also be used to burn him to ash, and once those ashes are scattered he can never be resurrected. Lastly, one may also decapitate him and simply keep his head separated from his body.

History: Veliaf was born in a small, unimportant village. His mother died in childbirth, and his father died when he was only four years old, so the priest at the local temple took him in and raised him. There he was granted a decent education, learning to read while attentively listening to lessons on history and scripture. In truth, he found all the religious texts to be rather dull, but paid attention mainly out of gratitude.

Then one day, when Veliaf was 20, a stranger came to town and stayed for a number of weeks. All the villagers hung on his every word, and he was rarely seen outside at night time. Eventually people began to disappear, but only a handful were actually suspicious of their new visitor, and soon they began to vanish as well.

Veliaf and the priest immediately consulted their books, which confirmed their suspicions on what this stranger was. They equipped themselves to deal with this threat - the priest carried a wooden stake, while Veliaf carried a vial of holy water and a silver knife.

They awaited around the corner of the inn the creature was staying at. And when he exited, they struck. The priest threw his holy water, but the creature reacted just in time to bring his cloak up and absorb most of the liquid. Veliaf closed in with the stake, but the vampire grabbed it with one hand and shoved him backwards with the other. The creature then turned and rammed the stake into the priest's heart before he could close in with the silver knife.

The last thing Veliaf remembered before losing consciousness was the vampire standing over him...

He woke up in the care of the herbalist, who told him that the stranger had brought him in unconscious and then left town. Veliaf asked which direction, and immediately moved to follow, when he was struck with a sudden hunger...

He left the town after that, fleeing for his life with the herbalist's blood on his lips and hands. He tried to track down the stranger - whether it was for vengeance or for answers, he could not say. But it was to no avail. He knew exactly what he had become, yet the curse had darkened his heart as much as his soul, so eventually he stopped caring. He became stronger and stronger, learning to use his powers that were fueled by the blood of innocents.

And then one day, those powers vanished.

He was devastated. All he had was the hunger, and he soon realized he had to sate that hunger without his abilities. So he learned to move stealthily, to pick locks and pockets, to charm people without suggestion spells. With his invulnerability gone, he also needed to defend himself, so he studied the blade.

Others of his kind had been less able to adapt. They were killed in their dozens, and hunted to near extinction. For all Veliaf knew, he could be the last one. Life continued on, survival for survival's sake, as he desperately wished his powers would soon return, or that he would find some sort of purpose...

Name: Aria Silber
Age: 16
Race: Human/Demon

Description:
A tall, lithe, if not bottom heavy woman with a modest bust. Her long jet black hair cascades down her back, tied in a high ponytail with a red ribbon. Below her bangs are a pair of rounded amber eyes.

Aria moves so gracefully one would never hear her footfall even in a forest of twigs, yet her demeanour comes across as modest, nervous and reserved… if not a little clumsy.

Due to the comparatively hot temperatures of the south, Aria has shed a few layers on her travels. She presently wears a black short cut jumper dress over a whit(ish) blouse. Her arms are bare but for a pair of tightly fastened leather vambraces, her legs similarly clad in over-the-knee riding boots.

Powers: Kitsune Physiology

History:
An expert with the bow, Aria grew up at one of the many spiritual shrines found within the far northern forests. Though they once offered divine fortune in return for offerings, the spirits of the shrines seemed to disappear one by one as the magic faded from the world. Without the spirits blessing, the encroaching frost continually destroyed villagers crops, pests ravaged village stores and rabid beasts and bandits encroached brazenly on populated settlements.

Even in the north, Amber is a rare eye colour, often given to those blessed with strong connections to the spirits – or, at least, so the folklore goes. It was believed by the elders that Aria alone could end their trials and bring the spirits back to this world.

Enough is enough! I shall meet this Farius and learn of his secrets. I will bring back Fox's – no – Valen’s blessing! ” Aria had pledged, before beginning her first steps on the long trail south.

Veliaf

"I'm telling you, the knife isn't worth that much."

Veliaf stood before the merchant, an blacksmith's apprentice who had been sent to sell his master's works. The object he was haggling over was a simple dagger, newly made and of good quality steel.

Veliaf himself was clad in a vest of boiled leather, with a pair of quilted cotton pants and some soft-soled leather shoes. A black cape hung from his neck, and a steel sword was sheathed at his left hip. He pointing to the dagger sheathed on his other hip. "See? I already have one just like it!" Though a spare is always useful ...

The apprentice looked uncertain. He was clearly unused to this task. No surprise - the blacksmith usually manned the stall himself. Veliaf concluded that he must be otherwise occupied. Finally, the apprentice spoke. "My master was clear on the price, sir. He won't be happy if I just charge whatever I want."

Does this fool not know about haggling? Veliaf thought to himself curiously. For one wistful moment he wished he had still his powers - he could likely persuade the fool to give him the dagger for free.

Veliaf was just about to respond when somebody bumped into him. Frowning, the vampire immediately dropped one hand to the hilt of his sword, and the other to his coin purse. Upon noticing that it was still there he looked down at the girl now sprawled across the ground.

Reaching down, Veliaf grabbed the girl by the wrist and attempted to haul her to her feet with a surprising amount of strength. His frown shifted into a slightly amused smirk. "I suppose I should call the guards, then?" He asked her, studying her face for a response. His eyes briefly shifted down to her neck, but he wasn't thirsty. Nonetheless, his grip on her wrist remained iron tight, and his hand had not left his weapon.

Melendar, Markets

The raggedy girl ran forth and bumped into some guy, falling down. Kibou had noticed this from across the street, having been walking the opposite direction. His o-dachi was sheathed down his back, and his three other blades sheathed as well.

“Huh... how stereotypical.” Kibou remarked, stopping, then turning to the side and crossing his arms. “A thief’s trade is to walk casually, snatch casually, then leave casually, all the while paying attention elsewhere. But going to jail is not a bad thing, you can learn much from prisoners. Unless jail in this land is... different.” he commented. He then looked at Veliaf. “Are you the baker? Surely, you could spare the little one a coin. I do not think my own foreign currency would work here.”
