On the soft sands of the beach, the elder Shaman removed their emblems and passed them to their students. Lata looked to her fellow students, without words and with sad eyes she told them not to protest. This had to happen to save the others and they needed to remain strong for their people - they were the masters now.

“Spirits of Earth, I summon you. Rise for my people,” the Shaman of Earth said.

She clutched her back in her hand and clawed it open. The stones glowed and the power flowed into her. There was a rumble, the waves lapped against the shore faster. The Shaman fell to her knees but her eyes stayed fixed on the horizon. She channelled her power into the waters and stones rose from the depths over five miles from the shores. The people bowed their heads as a great mountain appeared in the sea.

It rose up, moving higher and higher, and wider the more that it appeared. Salt water rushed from the rock, but it didn’t take long for it to dry. Then the peak of the mountain flattened, it looked as though some great blade had just cut cleanly through the top of the mountain to leave a surface as smooth as rock could be. Then came the rings - flattened areas of the mountain that became larger the lower to the base they went.

The last thing the Shaman of Earth achieved was several flights of stairs running up the mountain, going from ring to ring until it reached the top. Then the Shaman succumbed to the drain of her life and lay dead on the shoreline.

The next Shaman stepped forward and clutched at his bag, “Spirit of Water, I summon you. Grant us life and let the waters flow,” he said as he cut the bag.

On the mountain top, the rock cracked and splintered. It collapsed into a smooth basin from the bottom of which fresh spring water bubbled up and filled. As it reached to top the spring burst forth into a fountain and the water spilled out over the rock. It flowed to the edges in eight streams and fell down to the next ring where it ran around it before falling down into the next ring, then again, and again until all rings had water. With each ring, the waterfalls flowed more forcefully than the one above.

With that, he died and the next came forward the Shaman of Air. With the mountain so high, the air above would be too thin to breath. With his sacrifice, a bubble of air surrounded the upper levels of the mountain.

The Shaman of Fire brought forth springs of molten rock from the depths of the planet. Fires to provide them with all the heat they’d need.

From the Shaman of the Jungles, after cutting open his bag he pulled another bag from his belt. He loosened the knot on the tie and threw the bag toward the new land. A rush of wind caught the bag and spilled countless seeds out to be carried to the land. On each ring of the mountain, rock became soil. Trees, plants, vines and moss and started to sprout and grow faster than anything on Gielinor ever had before.

With a bag small bone fragments from many of the lost species of Vareeni, the Shaman of Animals called forth their spirits and sent them to the newly formed jungles. The glowing spirit animals roamed in among the trees where spirit energy became flesh, bone and blood. The once non-existent island was now bustling with life.

Kita smiled as she looked upon the land. She took a step onto the water and as she did a rock rose beneath her. With each step there was another rock until she arrived on the island. He people picked up the bodies of the Shamans and crossed the path. When the last of them arrived, the path vanished back beneath the waves.

Lata looked at her fellow Shaman, now the Eldest of the Shaman before turning to her people. “In memory of our home, and all those left behind to give us this chance of life, I name this new home Vareen,” she said.

Soon they made their way up the great staircases, now hidden by the jungle, until they reached the top. Here they would build their new home.

Back at the Shore...

The World Guardian had checked the gate but found nothing of note, nothing but a massive tail of tracks that even a novice hunter could not miss. Following the trail, the guardian stopped dead at the shore and looked at the mass in the distance.

“Huh,” the guardian said.

After pulling out the world map and examining it closely, he nodded.

“Yeah, thought so. You are not supposed to be there,” he said.

There was no clear way to the mountain, certainly nothing in the immediate area that he could use to get there and he couldn’t make it just with a swim. Fortunately, there were a number of ships that could carry him. Given the questions yet to be answered, they’d be few crews that would take the risk, but many of which had captains that owed the World Guardian more than a few favours.

So, with a quick teleport to Rellekka...and a word with the captain that normally sailed to Miscellania, the World Guardian set sail. On a heading around the northern coast of Waterbirth Island and the past the Fishing Colony, the ship continued on south west into open water. The crew hadn’t sailed their waters often but they knew them well enough to know a big junk of rock was not supposed to be there.

Once close enough, the World Guardian ordered the ship to keep a slight distance but circle the mountain. They wanted to find some way up the sheer rock onto the first ring, there certainly wasn’t a beach to send a launch toward. As they searched a great beast, unknown to the world guardian, rose up from the sea and dived back down. A brief glimpse but it looked as though the creature was some kind of aquatic cat. The main part of its body was distinctly feline, yet there was a long, strong tail with fins. The mane, not fur but appeared similar to webbed skin with spines every few inches.

“What the hell was that?” one crew-member asked.

After an hour of sailing, the captain looked to the Guardian and shook his head.

“Looks like I’m going to have to climb,” the guardian said.

“There’s no way. Those cliffs are too steep, even with a grapple, I doubt you have a rope long enough...I may, however, have an alternative,” the captain said.

“Oh?” the guardian asked.

“I recently helped a young Adventurer called Meg. I was giving her a lift when we encountered a Sea Witch. The witch had been trapped on an island by some really angry druid who she refused to assist with raising a new god somewhere in Feldip....freaky, I know. Anyway, Meg insisted we help, we did and as a reward she gave me an escape spell,” the captain said.

“A spell...teleportation?” the guardian asked.

The captain nodded and from his belt pulled off an old bottle of rum.

“Yeah, that kind of escape...I don’t quite think it would help,” the guardian said.

“Oh the rum’s all gone...the rum always seems to be gone,” the captain said glumly, “The spell was trapped in the bottle by the witch. She said, where ever I found myself on the sea, if I was in trouble I should break the bottle and the spell would carry me to the nearest dry land where I could be safe. And that...that rock is the nearest dry land for miles.”

The captain tossed the guardian the bottle and the guardian smiled as he broke the bottle against the edge of the ship. Blue smoke rose and swirled around the guardian before it carried him into the air, over the sea and landed him squarely in the lower ring of the mountain. The jungle around the guardian was thick, thankfully he had a machete in the tool-belt and started to cut a trail to begin his explorations.

The Guardian charted the new island’s lower ring. There wasn’t much to see except the variety of animals, some the guardian wouldn’t mind testing his hunting skills on at some point in the future. It took a while to cover the ring, to topple a couple of trees to act as bridges over the river at various points. The waterfalls put out sprays that made a bridge a little slippery at times but he was agile enough to cross it when needed. Then he found a staircase.

Up in the next ring, the guardian didn’t think it was possible but the jungle was even denser. No matter how strong the hatchet or machete, nothing could cut through...at least not with any meaningful measure of time. However, it was more than strong enough to carry significant weight. The guardian climbed a tree and started to jump from branch to branch, swung on vines and ran through a practical labyrinth akin to what was experienced on the rooftops of Meiyerditch. It was practically an agility course, one that ran around the entire second ring.

However, there at the end, barely five foot from where the course began and completely unseen at the time thanks to the density of the trees, was another staircase formed of the rock.

Ring three, another jungle, but the trees and vines glowed with a divine energy. There was no distinct chasms like other spots found over Gielinor but the surface had cracked and cast off light, the guardian’s divine powers naturally understood these cracks were the chasm. This ring was smaller than the last but it was covered with silvery wisps, There weren’t any diviners channelling the power back into the cracks - he’d have to speak to someone about that.

Another ring up was strange. A single line of trees on the outer rim shielded viewers from seeing what was beyond - a flat surface of soil. It was nutrient rich and superior in quality to anything across the farming spots he used. The crops that could be planted here would be bountiful.

The fifth ring, the final ring was another plain, but hope to cats. Great cats, some wore an armour that was shaped at the back. It was clearly intended to allow someone to ride. Some cats had magnificent wings and flew around the ring. Some saw the Guardian and thrust their front paws forward, sharp claws darted out and pierced the ground at the Guardians’ feet. Before a weapon could be drawn, a sudden sharp pain knocked the Guardian cold.

The Peak of Vareen...

The Guardian awoke on a mat. The stars shone above but as his eyes adjusted and sat up, he could see numerous cat-like people around him. Each worked, some built what appeared to be a forge. Others examined protrusions of rock that were rich in metals, metals they didn’t recognise or knew how to work sufficiently. Others had piled the trunks of some trees and were working them into planks. They looked as though they weren’t wasting time and set about making shelters. It would be some time before they had homes of the quality they were used to but that wasn’t their need at the moment.

Hunters arrived with food they had gathered since their arrival while a small group of cats dressed in grey robes gathered around a great pile of glowing rocks. It appeared to be a summoning obelisk but the Guardian couldn’t believe the power being sensed from it. If these people were summoners, they knew things beyond what was currently known.

There were three around the guardian, a swordsman, mage and ranger. They didn’t know the skills of this intruder and weren’t taking chances.

“It’s awake,” one of the guards yelled.

Lata broke away from the Shamans and walked over to the Guardian. “What are you?” she asked.

“I’m human, I...well, I’m one of many races on Gielinor. I was tasked by finding out what happened...I tracked it to the World Gate and then out here where I found this island. And you?” the Guardian said.

“Vasir. We are the last of the Vasir of Vareeni, we called this place Vareen. Why you? Are you chief or king? Soldier or advisor?” Lata asked.

“None. I’m known as the World Guardian,” the guardian said.

Everyone heard and stopped what they were doing. They looked at the strange human before they turned to Lata. A wave of her hand and they were sent back to their tasks. “Come with me World Guardian,” she said.

She helped him stand and walked the Guardian through the camp toward a cave that shone with a blue light.

“Enter, she awaits you,” Lata said.

“Who?” the guardian asked.

“Kita,” Lata said, before going back to work at the obelisk.

Inside the cave, the World Guardian found a woman, bathed in blue light despite the red and yellow flickering from the small fire. A small gesture from her hand and the loose dirt of the cave floor coalesced into a figurine of her brother. The guardian could feel the god-power coming from her. Behind her, a young Vasir woman of sixteen, shivering and sweating.

“Your kind...it is different than anything on Vareeni,” Kita said, another wave of her hand and her fire burst out with more intensity. “Come, sit with me. It is the Vasir’s custom to treat, or welcome strangers, by the light of our fire.”

The Guardian nodded and sat near the flames. “Thank you. I am...”

“The World Guardian, yes. My brother said you would find me...even at the end of our world he always saw more of the future than I did. Your power, it’s impressive for one who is not a god. Tell me, how did it come to you?” Kita asked.

“Shouldn’t you know already...as a god?” The guardian asked.

“On my world I would. Here, here I am new. It will take time for me to acclimate, for my power to attune to the harmonies of this world. However, this close to you, tell me this story will help me see it,” Kita said.

“Well, there was a powerful god, Guthix. Guthix was killed but named me one of the Guardians...but it all started back when...” the World Guardian proceeded to tell the goddess details of his adventures. From the first moments exploring Lumbridge and the first quests to Sliske and his great game.

“You have come far for one so young and your skills are impressive. Tell me, the great cracks...you have experience with them?” Kita asked.

“A result of Guthix’s death...and the god battles,” the guardian said.

“Neri, the girl behind me, she was one of your young hunters but was drawn to the crack...the only one of my people who seemed to understand it, or at the very least could feel it. She tried to channel the power, I cannot help her...I don’t know how,” Kita said.

“Channelling divine energy that powerful, she’s lucky she didn’t die immediately. Someone inexperienced as she is, the Chasm near Draynor would have been better to start with,” the guardian said while leaving the fire to the girl’s side.

The guardian hovered a hand over the girl and focused. Neri glowed slightly, a glow that followed the Guardian’s hand up toward her mouth where it escaped out of Neri. The Guardian caught it before taking it to the cave entrance and blowing it away. Neri immediately sat up and coughed before she took a deep breath. She looked around, saw Kits and immediately fell to her knees.

“Thank you Great One,” Neri said.

“No, do not thank me, thank the World Guardian. Now, run off just now. Join the others,” Kita said.

Neri bowed her head to the stranger before speeding out of the cave.

“I owe you Guardian for not letting another of my people die this day. I have some requests of you if you are willing,” Kita said.

The Guardian nodded.

“First, my people are not the Dishonoured, we do not take what is not ours. Thank is why, with sacrifice, this new land was formed. I ask that you, one who has the ear of kings and queens, of gods and devils, go to them and tell them they have no need to fear the Vasir or me. The Vasir are my only concern, and here we shall remain to rebuilt our civilisation in some small way. However, if they challenge them or me...we shall fight with all we have until they are dead or we are,” Kita said.

“I’ll do what I can. Most will listen, some wont. There’s another god nearby you may wish to get to know, Seren. She’s likeminded. She has no interest in the God Wars, or her brother’s plans with regard to the elders. Her elves are skilled and may help you,” The Guardian said.

“I would be grateful to all that you could do. Additionally, the metals of this land are unknown to us. If you could teach my miners and metal-workers all that you know, they will teach you all they know in return,” Kita said.

“If you don’t know the metals, they what use is that knowledge on Gielinor?” the guardian asked.

“We know of much. We learned how to increase our speed in both skills of metal, not to mention that we honour the spirits of metal and that reforms the metals in the rock that they were mined from much faster than without our rituals. In fact, my people have many skills that we can further educate you with. And with an understanding of our ways, you in turn can better speak for the Vasir to the other races of this Gielinor,” Kita said.

“Like your agility labyrinth?” the guardian asked.

“Indeed. Now that you know the route through, I could block all unnecessary paths for you. This would give you a great challenge with which to train your skill without getting lost as others who come here may. Our hunting skills are second to known, and our new hunting grounds are filled with life,” Kita said.

“I would be glad to help in any way I can, I would be glad to assist building your settlement, and upgrading buildings are more resources become available. Although, a bank would probably be a good idea. Accessing my personal materials would help, not to mention money,” the guardian said.

“Bank? What is a bank? And money?” Kita asked.
