Hello, everyone. I have been a part of this story forum for a long time--about four years. And I have decided to make my own short story thread. My other one died as I left, so now this is the return, but I am only putting my better entries on here.
I will probably only be writing contest entries and put them up here, but regardless, I hope you enjoy what I decide to put up here. They are all recent works of mine, so hopefully they are better than what I have written in the past.

~~The Brink of Madness~~

Cold, black, and endless describes what was in the Tzharr’s cracked, lava-flown hands as he walked through the city of the Tzharr. The story behind this marvel knows no bounds like a man whose path is endless—never to return, never to share the elixir of knowledge. The rock knows nothing—nothing of where it is or where it will end up. Is the onyx important, or does the importance lie deeper within?

A black gem, the darkest and least attractive of them all, costing as much as it does sounds like a hoax—an impossibility that should be challenged much like the ways of the council of Falador. How does such a dark thing have such value? Darkness symbolizes a lack of hope; it symbolizes depression and death. People, however, embrace the darkness. It is an escape to people who have lost hope.

The Tzharr doesn’t understand about the darkness, lack of hope, or anything negative, however. How could such an innocent creature understand the terror of the world above him? The Tzharrs, as menacing as they look, are actually creatures of peace, negligent of the pointless violence above. Their only act is to defend their own—no more violence than that is a part of their society. It is the humans who bring violence into their peaceful land.

The gem in his hand represents not only darkness, but it also represents unity of the world. Darkness is part of everything and everyone—humans, plants, Tzharrs, rocks, and much more. The influence of the darkness varies for each, and this is why the Tzharrs don’t understand what humans do—they experience very little depression due to their peaceful and solitary nature under the earth above.

As with all things in life, the gem—this gem specifically—shows a flaw. The Tzharr, before bringing it to his boss, checked the gem he found carefully. He felt it, looked at it, and did whatever else he could to make sure it was perfect. “Uh oh, a crack,” the Tzharr said under his breath in his native tongue. “Worthless.”

Without looking back, he tossed it behind him, and it landed in a pit of lava and started to sink. The onyx with its dark decorum, for the last time, looks upon the light of this world to be surrounded by lava—never to melt, never to be retrieved, but instead just be that solitary item with nothing to interact with. The situation represents society; every person is alone and surrounded by everything around him/her. Not a person, but a tool, the same applies for the onyx.

People are like that poor onyx. People are social creatures bound by rules and gagged if order is not followed. Merely existing breaks the rules somehow, and people are left alone. The darkness is an escape and the value of escape from madness knows no bounds. All people are a little mad; all people need the escape from madness. The darkness is always open.

This entry was for round two of Lebbeh's Survivor story contest. The entry had to be about a skill in RuneScape. Enjoy.

---

Blood… The blood is everywhere. Screams filled the air—terrible cries, ear-shattering screams, and a roar that will never be forgotten even after death. I am the last survivor, but not for long; once that beasts comes for me, I have no chance. Devouring my partner, my friend, I could hear the sound of flesh sliced, crushed, and grinded. The sound was sickening enough to make me puke. How are these creatures so menacing, so disgusting, so…?

What were we thinking, he and I? We listened to that man. He said there were treasures to unlock and mysteries to unravel. An easy time, we thought. Oh how wrong we were. The treasures, we found out after venturing in, cannot be brought back to the surface due to the magic surrounding it. And the mysteries… The real mystery lies in these disturbing beasts—where did they come from, and why are they the way they are?

My partner’s screams have stopped; he must be dead now. As the beast continues to chew and tear, my hands shake, my face is covered with sweat, and my body nearly convulses. It’s a terrible sight—a sight one would expect in his/her worst nightmare. This is no nightmare. This is reality, a revolting sight.

This beast, with its rough-hide skin and grotesque complexion, made me wonder where these ugly and disturbing beasts come from. Are they naturally this vicious, or is there some sort of evil person who would concoct a beast like this? What a bone-chilling thought.

The beast, once done with my friend, turned to me and roared so loud and with such a harsh growl that it felt like the flesh was being stripped from my bones, leaving nothing but a skeleton—exactly the way the beast left my friend.

I pulled out my sword in an attempt to defeat this monster, afraid that I will be its next victim. Praying to Saradomin to protect me from its vicious teeth and claws, I ran after it with the intent of spilling its blood. The beast roared again, but this time, a ball of fire came out and hit me square in the chest, knocking me back into the wall. I screamed in agony as the heat penetrated my armour, leaving me cooked inside.

No more energy from a single attack. This beast is more powerful than any of us expected. I coughed blood, a sign of dying. By its eyes, I could tell the beast was ready for the killing blow. The protection from Saradomin died out, and I was left powerless. This is the end, and all for some stupid treasure.

The beast squatted down, the muscles growing about two times their normal size, and then it made a large leap towards me. I could feel the teeth sink into my shoulders. Screaming again for the last time, with my dying breath, I yelled out:

“Curse you Daemonheim!”

For round three of Lebbeh's survivor contest, I was tasked to write an entry about fire. Here it is. Enjoy.

---

“What you see before you is more than what meets the eye. What you see represents acts of love, hate, compassion, and malice. The amount of emotions and drive behind what you see is beyond comprehension.

“For you see, child, like water, what you see before you has many useful applications, whether it be to warm up something that’s cold, cook something that is raw, or even to kill a man. Like water, the uses of this beauty can be both helpful and hurtful.

“The creator of life, they call water, eh? Well what you see before you is the fuel of life. Use it well and it will aid you and others throughout your life. However, if you use it poorly, death and destruction will rein upon you and those around you. The choice is yours. But please, my child, know that no matter what choice you make, be yourself. What you see before you burns brightest in your heart. Remember that.”

“What path did you take?” the little girl asked. She sat there, staring at the flame, pondering the many things that can be done with the beauty in front of her. “Are you a good man, or a bad man?”

“Well,” he said as he snapped his fingers. “I use it as I need it.” A log on the ground suddenly combusted into flames. The man took out a piece of raw meat from his backpack which made his cape, orange with a log lit on fire etched in it, flow in the wind. He picked up a nice looking stick on the ground, skewered the meat, and held it over the fire.

“Rabbit!* the girl exclaimed, licking her lips.

“Indeed,” the man said, smiling. “So you see, as I mentioned before, cooking is just one of the many useful aspects of fire.” Once the rabbit was cooked, the man took it off the skewer and placed it on a clean patch of grass. Sifting through his bag again, he took out a knife this time and cleanly cut the rabbit into manageable pieces to eat.

“Dig in,” he said as he took a piece and chewed it. The girl looked at him as he was chewing, and she couldn’t help but smile and take a piece for herself.

As she was eating, she asked with her mouth half-full, “I never got your name. What is it?”

The man wiped the few pieces of meat that the girl accidently spat at him, and then he said with pride, “I am Ignatius Vulcan, a pyre master. No one knows more of the art of fire than I. This is why I plead of you to take my words wisely. Fire is very helpful—as our ancestors a long, long time ago have figured out—but at the same time, it is extremely dangerous. Pick your use of fire wisely, and life will go well for everyone who deserves peace. You understand?”

The girl, still baffled by all this, nodded and smiled without uttering another word.

“Good,” he said.

“Vulcan,” the girl said, now eager to say something. “Why did you rescue me? Why did you take me in?”

“No reason at all,” Vulcan said. “You were in need, and I answered your cries. Also, I have made many mistakes in my past. I must make up for them. Take that whatever way you want. Just be happy I saved your life, and nothing more needs to be said.”

Both of them stayed quiet after that, sat down, and ate until the rabbit was completely gone. Vulcan got up and doused the fire with his foot, looked at the girl, and then smiled. “Let’s go.”

She got up and walked alongside him, and they walked along the fields near Seer’s as the sun set behind them.

For the penultimate round of Lebbeh's survivor contest, we had to write a haiku and write a story around it. I got first place with this one. Enjoy.

---

“Celestial night
Come to me and close my eyes
Give me hopes and dreams”

Cars—some with their high beams on—passed swiftly by the young teenage girl as she walked along the side of the road. Pitch black outside and with no light source other than the passing cars, still the girl walked as if fate was showing her the path she must take.

“I hate you all!” she yelled out as if to send a message to those she came to despise throughout the short fifteen years of her life. “Nothing is worth it anymore. Is there anything you all want to say to me? No, nothing? Fine. You will all regret it.”

Looking up at the stars as if to calm herself, she said in a much lighter tone, “At least there is hope. I see it within you, celestial body of masses oh so far away, spread about within the cosmos. How—”

She was interrupted by the honk of a car horn and by a splash of water from the ground. She screamed, and started running towards the car. She knew she would not catch up, but her thoughts had a different path.

After walking a few more miles along the road, she took a path through the forest, as if to avoid all hints of society. Even darker in the forest, she continued to march through brush, bramble, and thorns. Pricked a few times, and blood flowing down her arms and legs, she still did*’t care and just kept on moving. She knew her path, and that was the only thing on her mind.

In time—her digital watch said two in the morning—she made it. The cliff awaited her—has been awaiting her for quite some time; she had also been awaiting it. The synchronization between the two entities couldn’t be any more solid than a husband and wife on the first day of marriage.
