Dwarven Religion

The Dwarves follow a monotheistic religion, in which they revere a god known as the Forgefather. He made the world and all that was in it. However, they do not pray to the Forgefather directly. Instead, they pray to what he has built.

The Forgefather's Foundation
The Foundation represents the world around us, and the very fabric of reality. To swear by the Foundation is to swear by your very existence.

The Forgefather's Pillars
There are four pillars, each representing a particular aspect of Dwarven life. The Pillar of Valour represents strength and bravery, the Pillar of Labour represents hard work and dedication, the Pillar of Honour represents honesty and loyalty, and lastly the Pillar of Revelry represents the ability to enjoy life itself.

Dwarves are encouraged to maintain a balance between the four pillars, but that does not necessarily mean they have to do so in moderation. To swear by a Pillar is to swear by every achievement you have ever made which could be classified under that Pillar. To swear by every Pillar at once is to swear by everything you have ever accomplished.

The Forgefather's Wall
The Wall represents what makes Dwarves separate and unique from other races. To swear by the Wall is to swear by your identity as a Dwarf.

The Forgefather's Roof
The Roof represents Dwarven Society itself. Held up by the Pillars, protected by the Wall, all of which rest on the Foundation. To swear by the Roof is to swear by your place in this society.

If a Dwarf wishes to swear upon all of these things at once, they must simply say: "I swear by the Forgefather's Hall."
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

The Dwarven Army

Unlike the humans who rely on peasant conscripts, the dwarves maintain a professional army, usually around 6,000 strong. This force consists primarily of heavy infantry, clad in steel plate. Of this number, approximately 2,000 are spearmen, 1,500 wield two handed weapons, and another 1,000 favor one-handed weapons accompanied by shields. For archers, they have 1,000 crossbowmen. They also maintain a force of 500 or so light cavalry, but this force is generally reserved for scouting, skirmishing, and escort duties.

When the Kingdom goes to war, the army opens its ranks to volunteers. The bulk of these volunteers end up becoming crossbowmen, as it requires less equipment and skill than a melee combatant. Others will become either spearmen or axe-and-shield infantry.

The army's commanders are almost exclusively dwarves of noble birth.

The army currently possesses a strength of 12,000, and is organized as follows:
-3000 spearmen.
-2000 axe-and-shield infantry.
-3000 two-handed infantry.
-3000 crossbowmen.
-500 gunmen.
-500 light cavalry.

Technology

The world is currently at medieval-level tech. Black-powder weaponry does exist, however only the dwarves are in possession of it. They have been extremely reluctant to adopt it, due to their lack of respect for ranged weaponry in general. As a result, it is not something that is carried in vast quantities.
