Apologies for what might be considered a silly question, but I've read a few things lately about setting goals within the game. But how do you set goals when you're a new player and don't know how everything works yet? Any suggestions please?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you can set skill objectives via the skills tab. You can right click on any skill and you should see the following options:

View Skillguide
Set Level Target
Set XP Target
Clear Target
Cancel

By clicking on Set Level Target or Set XP Target, you can set a specific objective you'd like to achieve.

I hope this helps!

Thank you so much, I'll have a look at this! :)

Spr1ngz provided you some good information on how to set specific skill goals.

Personally, I have never used this feature. However, you may find it useful.

Instead, I keep a few tabs open in the lower-right corner of my screen. One of these is the Skills tab, where I can view all my skills anytime with a single click. Mousing over any skill tells me how much XP I need in order to gain the next level. I find this tab to be useful, as it will show me which skills I might want to work on more, as well as which skill might be best for me to increase by using an XP lamp on that skill.

To more broadly answer your question, the good news is it's entirely up to you which goals you set for yourself, and these goals will probably change many times - or you may have multiple goals you will work towards together. Some goals may involve training several skills.

For example, say you like melee combat and wish to take on tougher monsters worth more XP...but you want better gear. Therefore, you train Mining, so you can access better ores. Then, you train Smithing, so you can make stronger armor and weapons. If you prefer Magic or Ranged combat, you would train Crafting and Fletching instead. Maybe you'd rather train Fishing, Woodcutting, Runecrafting, or Archaeology instead. Then you can sell resources to earn enough coins to buy better gear. There is no set path. It is up to you.

Maybe doing quests are goals you'll want to focus on. Maybe you want to work on a few skills, or work on a lot of them, or all of them. Especially when you are starting out, I'd suggest trying a bit of everything and see what you really enjoy, and what you might not like as much.

Of course, the most important goal is to have fun. :)

You can buy XP. You can't buy experience.
"...From The 'Scape" is very nearly here.

Thanks Aslon, there does seem to be much to do. I'm following two quest lines just now and while quite different in nature, I'm having a lot of fun with them. Guess I'll just see what I feel like doing when I log in each day! :)

Welcome and good luck with your goals.

I've been here about a year and a half now. Yes, there is much to do, but that is a good thing.

It all may seem overwhelming at times, but you'll find your way.

Who knows...you might even decide to detail your adventures in a diary. ;)
I've been putting out fire with gasoline! ^_^
