RS3 Mobile Public Chat no work

I use rs3 mobile on Samsung Galaxy S9. This has been happening for a while, and I've tried a few things to try and get it to work, but no luck so far.
Symptoms:
-When I login, or if I close/reopen the app, my chat box defaults to "friends chat:". If I try sending text, it tells me I'm not in a friends chat (which I'm not, so true)
-I am able to send private messages by normal means, and use clan chat by typing in // before my text
-what seems to be the correct method to change it to public chat does not work for me. I press and hold over the "friends chat" text, and press "public chat" on the dropdown menu. But when I try that method, it gives me the error "quick chat is currently disabled on runescape mobile." It also gives me that error if I press any other option on the dropdown menu.

I've tried looking at communication settings, but did not find anything that looked applicable. Help would be greatly appreciated!
