Well usually i would agree the problem being an older model phone but in this case he has been playing mobile since it was released on mobile, just recently these events have occurred it’s definitely something to do with the app update and not the phone.

This probably isn't the cause of the issue, but it's still something to keep in mind. The iPhone 7 was released approximately four years ago. Despite your friend updating to the latest current software, the phone's hardware may not be up to par despite minimum requirements/recommendations for playing OSRS.
Something like this could be attributing to the reason why your friend is having random lag spikes or freezes, whereas you can play smoothly (you mentioned you had a newer model iPhone).
