Two Accounts One Email?

This post is not for me but for a buddy who just started to play the game and has started having a lot of fun. He started his account on his phone and wanted to play the game on his laptop but when he attempts to use his account info on his desktop he logs into a level 3 new account with a different name? We have made sure his account info is correct and we have changed the password twice but when we send the email it only lets us change the password for the level 3 account on the desktop but not the one on his phone? We are really stumped and we are not sure what is going on.

When an account is created on mobile, you need to add an email and password if he wants to log in via another device (desktop/laptop).

If he uses an Android: Add a login email to Google created accounts

If he uses an iOS: Add a login email to Game Center accounts

The account he has been logging in to on his laptop is a completely separate account. He may have created it by accident!
