Hi. I recently recovered my Runescape account. I had also bought a membership on my OSRS account. I was under the impression that if i bought a membership on OSRS then i'd also be a member in RS3.

However my membership didn't activate on RS3? Both account are under the same email address. This is especially frustrating because I can't find the Jagex Billing Support contact. Can anyone point me in the right direction or offer help?

You are correct that membership for a single account will give you access to both OSRS and RS3 member content. This would mean you are logging into either game with the same account details.

The Support Centre for billing concerns can be accessed here , which can also be accessed by clicking the Support button in the upper-right corner of the homepage.

They may both use the same email address for security purposes, but they are indeed two separate accounts - one account uses a traditional username and the other uses a login email address. The login email address is simply a type of username; you can change the security email address that's attached to the account, but you will always log in with the login email.

The problem in your situation is that the account you purchased membership for has access to both RS3 and OSRS. If you try logging into both games with that particular account, they will both have access to member content. The second account won't have access to that content unless it also purchases membership.

To confirm, since you are logging in with a username for one account and a login email for the second account, they are indeed two separate accounts in the system. Using the same security email address on the accounts will not link those accounts.

So you’re saying I have 2 runescape accounts with the same email address? I’m sorry but this can’t be accurate. It’s impossible to have two runescape accounts with the same email address; I know this because just now I tried to make a new runescape account under this email address, but it says I’m not able to create a 2nd account under the same email.

And both my RSOS & RS3 are registered under the same email because I get emails from both versions of RuneScape sent to my single email. To me it seems like my RS3 and OS aren’t “talking to each other in their system” despite being under one account

Yes and no. Traditional accounts that still utilize the username are accessed using the account's username. Players with these accounts can register an email address to their account for security purposes (changing password, recovery, etc.). The security email address can be changed at any time to another email address.

The second, newer type of account is created strictly with an email address. When you create an account with an email address, that email address functions as the account's username - it will always be used to log in to the account. However, the system also automatically registers this email address as your security email address, too. Similar to a traditional account, the security email address can be changed at any time. However, you will always log in with the original email address. If you change the security email address on a newer account, the old email address pretty much becomes a username.

Therefore, you can have one account with a username and a security email address and a second account with that same email address as the login email and security email.

It's impossible to use the same email address as the login email address (essentially functioning as the username). However, it is possible to use the same email address as the security email address. Additional, one account's security email address can be the same address as another account's login email.

Hypothetical example: (the following email addresses are fabricated)
Account one:
Username/login email address: Billybob24245
Registered email: [email protected]

Account two:
Username/login email address: [email protected]
Registered email address: [email protected]

Okay, I see that I’m wrong about having one account. But surely Jagex can take my RS3 character on my first account, and overwrite RS3 it to my 2nd account and the delete my first account, correct?

I just used my RS3 login to access RSOS and the character has never been played & is on tutorial island.

I never used my OSRS login to play RS3, so that character would also be in tutorial island.

I put a lot of time into RS3 on my first account (but none in OS), and put a lot of time into OS in my second account (but none in RS3).

With these circumstances can you take RS3 from my first account and OS from my 2nd account to merge into a single account? This way I would only be paying for one account, and have 1 playable character on each version of runescape.

Otherwise I’d have to pay for 2 memberships.

Unfortunately, this is not a service that Jagex offers. You would either have to purchase membership for the second account or start fresh on one of the versions of the game, depending on the account you choose.

Okay can you please cancel my membership then?

Jagex should be able to do this; I’ve purchased subscriptions from companies outside of the tech industry that allow you to merge separate accounts into a single subscription/account (even if they were originally different accounts & paying separate subscriptions). Therefore I think it’s safe to assume that Jagex could do this as well (being a tech company), but just refuses to. If you’re only giving me the option to pay for two subscriptions then I’d rather pay for none.

Honestly this comes off as Jagex being very deceptive and profit hungry. The fact that you can make two accounts under the same security email to give players the impression that they have a single account, and then it’s too late after the player realizes? This seems like Jagex is trying to force some players into buying multiple subscriptions. Even if the intent wasn’t to be deceitful i highly doubt Jagex is incapable of merging these accounts. I’m sure Jagex is preying on all the people that are coming back to RS.

If the point of a security email is “security” then you would think that you would only be a able to attach a single security email to one account. If someone hacks my security email then they would have access to all my accounts. That’s not secure.

Please cancel my membership. Please confirm when complete. Thank you.
