Jagex, you are killing me
New update, now no client works on linux
Again, using linux mint with intel GPU, client is stuck at loading application resources.
This makes me think about quitting, apparently there is no support for linux even if there is a client present.
Funny part is that snap client worked this morning

Got to spend a little time debugging. When I ran the runescape-launcher form the command line it said:
Gtk-Message: 22:04:01.608: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module"
I've got the latest version of gtk3 and a `ldd runescape` didn't give me any missing .so
Thx, for "downgrading" the snap client
and provide instructions to launch in debug mode
I get this message in when using runescape.rs3 -l :
Launching RuneScape
Gtk-Message: 11:14:29.218: Failed to load module "gail"
Gtk-Message: 11:14:29.219: Failed to load module "atk-bridge"
Even tough x64 and x32 packages are installed :
libgail-common is already the newest version (2.24.32-4ubuntu4).
libatk-adaptor is already the newest version (2.34.2-0ubuntu2~20.04.1).
libgail-common:i386 is already the newest version (2.24.32-4ubuntu4).
libatk-adaptor:i386 is already the newest version (2.34.2-0ubuntu2~20.04.1).
And true, the performance is awful we can only wait for jagex to fix this issues, and I'm willing to bet that it will take a while.

A second issue is that they've transitioned from using GLX to EGL as backends for the graphics system, and this is triggering driver bugs that result in the splash screen getting stuck at "Loading application resources"; and becoming unresponsive, it doesn't shut down by itself.
This is news to me. So from my vantage point with my NVIDIA card, it looks like either NVIDIA proprietary driver v355.06 is needed at minimum for EGL, or open source drivers. v355.06 appears to require at least GeForce 400 Series, a bump up from the previously required GeForce 100 Series presently listed as a minimum req for Runescape. Per the release notes for v355.06:
"Added experimental full OpenGL support to EGL."
But the last NVIDIA proprietary driver that supports my card is v340. My card is a GeForce 9800 GTX, roughly equivalent to a GeForce GTS 150.

For Intel/AMD/NVidia open source drivers, the snap and flatpak contain their own internal versions of some of the Mesa libs, which form a large part of the graphics stack on open source drivers. It's possible that either of the two packages individually might work even if your host system does not.
It's preferable to use them if so than to mess around with the system installation of Mesa, because it isolates the libraries to the individual applications and doesn't risk screwing up your system in the same way as say, using a PPA.
For NVidia proprietary graphics, Snap and Flatpak MUST use the system driver and cannot substitute any of their own components, the only valid option here is to change the NVidia d
Thank you very much for the excellent in depth explanation. While the open source drivers are nice, IIRC there are downsides such as poor video-in-browser performance so I'll just keep using v340 proprietary driver and play something else sadly... maybe I'll be back in later years.
