When I accepted the Jagex "Account" I then added all my characters; thus, if I'm understanding correctly, they can no longer be played as before because their login user names & passwords were wiped when they went onto the "account". All these characters can now only be played via the "account".
Correct. Instead of say, logging in using jodie + password to log in to jodie , you now use a NEW email address + password to log in to jodie AND 19 more characters that you may or may not have added to your Jagex Account. Any prior login -- either a username + password or email + password -- becomes useless and obsolete; you may now only use an email address + password for your Jagex Account where you have access to 20 characters total to select from.

I also noticed just today that the "manage character" hyperlink on the Jagex Launcher pulls up a different window than it had been doing when I was adding characters to it "prior" to my accepting the "account". Before it would simply pull up a window where I could place a character's user name & password & that would then add that character onto the Jagex "Launcher". Now, however, the "manage character" hyperlink on the Jagex "Launcher" pulls up what appears to be a web page where all the characters already on the "account" show up & I can "manage" each one individually.
This is probably because the Jagex Account system was still in beta and since it has been fully released, it may now function as they had initially intended. The new page that opens up is your Jagex Account Management section where you are able to manage each character individually as it was originally planned.

Now, as it stands, for security reasons, once you add a character to a Jagex Account, it cannot be removed; however, on July 10th, 2023, Jagex gave us an update on a possible feature that would allow you to archive characters, giving you more space to add other desired ones; however, this will not remove the character from the Jagex Account:

"I saw something that mentioned the ability to archive characters, is this still in the works?

You may have seen the concept of Character Archiving in the recent Jagex Account Survey. This feature would allow you to hide redundant characters from your list, freeing up space for more active accounts without unbinding any characters. This is not a confirmed feature, but the Publishing Platform team are looking into it. Please note that It would NOT unbind the character from the Jagex Account!"

Well I do so hope Jagex keeps the "account" safe; because as it stands now, should something go wrong with the Jagex Account, we have lost all characters we placed on it. And since so many of us value our characters, I suspect I'm not the only one who placed all the most valued characters onto it. Feeling rather helpless at this point and dependant on Jagex to keep my account safe...................(Since I've kept them all safe for over 20 years, this helpless feeling does not set well with me.)

If Jagex had even the slightest concern there would be issues of people losing their characters because of something on their end, this new system would not be out yet for any player to use.

On Jagex's end, everything is set and working as intended....I've heard of accounts having issues, but every single incident of someone losing an account has been entirely on the user's end. Either an insecure account being hijacked and imported to someone else's character, account sharing mishaps, or not following basic account security protocols and losing access to their authentication devices/backup codes and getting locked out.

Jagex has provided us everything, we have the responsibility to maintain our account access and security....just like we had to do before Jagex Accounts were a thing.

Keep your new login credentials secure, keep your email secure, and keep your authenticator/backup codes secure...and no matter where you log in at, your account will be fine.

YtHaar-Mej, it is real nice you're ability to trust Jagex so much. I would like to myself; but my trust lvl is quite low.

I have kept all my characters safe for over 20 yrs which should let all know I am not one to risk losing control of anything that would affect the safety of my RuneScape characters. So should something go wrong now I will know it was not on my side that it did so!

One last question: There have been times when I've had to re-download the Jagex Launcher...always due to some fluke on my end. Downloading the launcher again has never been problematic! Now I'm wondering that, should I have to download the Jagex Launcher again, will it have all my characters on it? (It is a certainty I will not be able to put them on it as I've lost control of this by putting them on the Jagex "account".)

If you have to redownload it, it'll prompt you to sign into either an RS or Jagex account.

Once you sign into your Jagex Account, it will load all your characters tied to that account login.

You are "sure" about this? You have experienced it first hand?

Another question: Awhile back I stopped playing RuneScape for about 5 yrs (give or take). Upon my return "all" ... yes all ... my characters were just as I had left them. Now my question is: Should I leave the game for another few years, will all my characters (on account) still be available or will, after some time limit, I find that Jagex has closed them for not being worked; and if closed, how will I get them back?

Given that Jagex Accounts are not tied to the launcher program...yes.

That and macOS had a little bug once where we had to reinstall the launcher to be able to update it. It might remember your session, might not. Either it does and once you load the program, everything is ready to go; or, it'll prompt you to log in....and then everything will be ready to go.

Also, I have 2 computers which I'm signed on to, and 2 devices for mobile, and have had to log in/out to test a couple of things over the past few months. As always, my characters were.

Even if I went to a friends house, downloaded the launcher, and signed in...i'd be able to access my account on their computer. And vice versa...they came here, i sign out, they sign in, they'd be able to play their characters.

Accounts don't get closed for being inactive. At most, accounts have had display names reset. This hasn't been done in a number of years, and don't think there's any planned in the future.

So should any break occur, once you return....sign in, and everything is still there just like it has always been...provided you keep your credentials secure ofc.

Redownloading the Launcher will never have any affect on your Jagex Account , just the same as whenever you may have had to redownload the stand alone OSRS/RS3 clients, nothing happens to your characters. :)

That is because the Jagex Launcher and Jagex Accounts are not tied together. Just like how before, your standalone client wasn't tied to your single character you'd login with. So if you uninstalled the RS3 client, you're not deleting your character, just the client. It's the same with the Launcher.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Jagex Launcher several times, on different PCs, and time and time again, because the Jagex Launcher and Jagex Accounts are not tied together, nothing happens to my characters, and nothing ever will if I decided to reinstall it again.
Keep it fun, friendly, and helpful.

I do so appreciate the responses from each of you. I'm sure it is taking a log of patience to deal with me; so I'm grateful.

I keep hearing the "account" is not connected to the "launcher"; however, it is the launcher that has the characters on it. If the launcher is re-downloaded, how does it get the characters back on ? (This is the part I am having a hard time grasping.) And if the launcher (freshly downloaded) shows up WITHOUT the names of my characters on it?????
