ME 1 fixed device problem

I am trying to do the Mourning's End Part 1 quest, and I'm stuck at dying sheep. I have the fixed device loaded, but the arrow keys do not work - that is, they work for a short while, then become unresponsive to mouse-clicks, so I can't aim the device.

Not sure if this is related, but if I stand facing the sheep, then use the Fire Device to get cross-hairs, then immediately X from it, I am now facing in a random different direction - this appears to be reflected in the cross-hairs in that when I use Fire Device, the cross-hair view is completely different to what it should look like given the direction I was facing when I used Fire Device.

After a little research, the direction I am facing is irrelevant, when I use Fire Device, my character is turned to face north - this can be seen in the cross-hairs view - when I then X from the cross-hairs, my character is indeed facing North. Together with the non-responding arrow buttons, this mean I can only really aim at the sheep if i am standing south of them - I assume this is not intended behaviour!
