Good day,

I recently recovered my account and am trying to establish my character name.

When I use the Change Character Name function on the account page, it says the character name is unavailable.

However, when I check the friends list / ignore list for the character name it says there is no player known by that name.

Is the name locked or permanently unavailable? Is there any way to obtain the desired character name even though no one is using it? The desired name has been the only name of this account

I have not tried logging in using RS3 or OSRS clients to change name yet as I don't want to end up being forced to select a an autogenerated name

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

So, you are trying to set your display name back to its original login username?

This might not be possible.
The original name would have been removed due to account inactivity. When a name is removed due to inactivity, it is thrown back into the name pool for anybody to take.

There are two reasons why you are being prevented from selecting the name:
1. If someone else selected the name and, later, their account received a permanent ban, the name might be locked to the banned account.
2. If the name is free but your account is too low in total levels, you won't be able to select the name until you train your account higher.

Do you know what total level your account has? If the issue is total levels, you have no choice but to set another name, train your account up then add membership and try to select the name later on.
The minimum total level number is usually 1000 (though it might be lower depending on when the old name was removed).
If you train your account up to 1000 total levels, add membership then find you still can't choose the name, it will mean the problem is it has been locked to a banned account.
You won't be able to get the name removed from a banned account.

Finally, to be honest, it is a security risk using your login username as the visible display name nowadays. I don't recommend it.

Yes, that is correct. I was trying to set it to the original login username (though I may reconsider given the security risk).

I checked my runemetrics profile the account's total level is 492, so I am well below the 1000 total level mark. I will train to the 1000 total level and attempt to rename it for curiosity's sake.

The username was taken during the first purge since this account has been inactive for so long. I'll make my goal 1000 nonetheless to see what happens

Now to think of a new username!

Not to revive an old thread, but I'm having this issue and I wanted to get some clarification?

So... for what reason may we not be allowed to use a name until we reach a certain account level?

And why is it that I can log in with the name I have (and it's literally the only way I CAN log in) but I can't set it as my character name? Did I make a mistake, and there's a security block based on me using it to log-in?

Thanks Because you are a F2P-player there is a limitation ...
This means free players will retain their character names if they have logged into their account in the past year, or if they have any skills over level 30
... so become a 'member' and you're free to change your name.

If you have an account older than 2010 you can login with your 'account name' but that's not your 'display name' in RuneScape. Your display name can be changed, your login (account-) name can't be changed, just like an login emailaddress for younger accounts can't be changed.

They have never removed those restrictions. Meowscadada said :

It wouldn't matter whether the account was a member or non-member, your total levels are not high enough to take a "released" name.
