I got banned for using a Macro despite not using a macro or anything related.
Appealed it and one painful week later they denied the appeal. Their boilerplate twitter responses frequently note they will not re-review appeals that are denied just to shut you down but I can categorically state I didn't cheat in any way nor do anything to deserve a ban. I was also not hacked, I had 2FA and a unique password. It was an Iron account so it's kinda messed up to think an iron would even have incentive to cheat. I was enjoying the game legitimately, and did nothing to rub the community the wrong way either.

Does anyone know what I can do? I have tried reaching out like 40 times on twitter and had generic responses at best. It was a member account. I'm pretty sure my vpn put me on a server which flagged Jagex because it's IP was likely shared by someone legitimately banned for botting.

Their "evidence" is this (i'm writing in my own words but changing none of the context/how it reads to conform to community guidelines):
"You're banned for macroing. We reviewed your details closely and our detection system has seen you used an illegal 3rd party software against the rules and TOS. Our team has reviewed the evidence and confirm you are using illegal bot software.
Please re-read the rules if you want to make a new account"

Appealing the ban meant I had to somehow disprove the "evidence" above? I just told them I didnt use any such software/code etc and unfortunately didnt think of the vpn thing til later, not that it should matter - they are professionals and should know this could flag false positives. No shocker the appeal was denied, it's like the spagetti monster argument.

I only had 3 applications running. discord, firefox and runelite. I think they denied my appeal since they would only be able to do so on the proviso they admit to lying per above. Should have known it was a dead end. Seems to be happening frequently lately. Please help :(

I will point out that I am painfully aware of what would constitute as illegal third party software. My PC is very well maintained and there is nothing running that I'm not aware of. I am also fully aware of Jagex rules on OSRS and can confirm, and am willing to prove in any way, that no such program has nor has ever existed on my PC. I just want to be given a legit chance to prove innocence here.

Please read the following: Third Party Clients Update .

RuneLite might be the culprit here. Since they are saying that you utilized illegal third-party software, it may mean that you were using illegal add-ons on RuneLite. Unfortunately, we regular players here are unable to decipher why exactly you were banned, but considering that you were using RuneLite, then the reason may be the use of unauthorized add-ons.

I'd recommend that you double check the article I linked above. It'll have all the information that you may require regarding the use of third-party software while playing RuneScape. Although you will not get banned for merely using RuneLite, you will definitely get banned if you use add-ons that are considered against the rules . A list of illegal add-ons -- NOT all of them are listed and the list may change at any given time without prior notice -- may be found in the article above.

See straight away we have another. Why is this happening so often? I appreciate you can't provide your full evidence and method of collecting but at least give us something so that we can explain how we are not macroing. There isn't any evidence in your evidence.
If you know the software, state it please and we can show you whether or not we use it. If it just merely looks like a macro because of the inputs into the game then maybe look at the skills and activity on the account. My account basically only did quests, maybe 5-10 laps of the first 3 agility courses and like 10 mins fishing. A macro literally wouldn't have helped and certainly wasn't used. I'm trying to be diplomatic and patient but you haven't accused us of cheating, you've told us that we are. You have to appreciate how upsetting that can be if you're wrong (which you are) so please look into this ASAP.

Thanks Mrs Ana.
Sadly this wouldn't explain the problem. Agreed, vanilla runelite wouldn't be a problem since it's now endorsed via Jagex post. But all the external applications that you can download directly from within Runelite are verified to not be mailicious or rule breaking (though may cause bugs or instability) - Quoted directly from the runelite client. If I can assure you of anything, it's that this ban had nothing to do with how I operated my account and more about how they pick up false positive bot detection. My main account has 800+hours to date and uses the same pc and setup as this new Jipopotomaid account. I know the rules and would never cheat. If Jipopotomaid was banned, my 800+ hour one would surely be banned to for doing the same things for far longer.

Jipopotoman,
Posting in the forums is not a contact point to Jagex about ban reviews. The only people reading this thread are other players.

VPN use: Yes, players have been banned in the past due to using the same VPN as persistent rule breakers. VPN use is not recommended for RuneScape. It muddies Jagex record keeping of account use and ownership. It makes accounts almost impossible to recover if they ever get hijacked. It makes accounts vulnerable to being banned if the player inadvertently uses a dodgy VPN.

Thanks Malua, I am aware of this, I'm merely here to reach out to the community to see if they knew anything I could do to escalate this or at least get any help they might have, this has been extremely upsetting to me.

Also, I understand how VPNs are not easy for the bot detection to differentiate about, but that's certainly not justification for banning those using one. VPNs are well within the rules, for good reasons. Until Jagex bans VPNs, they can't ban players for using them. They have to be able to discern between legit players and bot accounts in some other way. Rules are there for a reason, it's so we can all have a good time knowing when we log on in 10 days time after playing for 100+ hours it wasn't for nothing.
