The rules say not to use bad language, especially targeted at someone. It doesn't matter if someone else starts something, if you respond in kind, you can get in trouble also. And because you did, this popped up. Just because they started it, that doesn't magically void the rules to let you respond in kind.
The other person might've received an offense also we dunno, but Jagex isn't going to show someone else's chat log. There's privacy issues (and laws Jagex has to follow) there where it's between Jagex and that player.
You have the ability to report them, and also to ignore list them. Iggy listing is a lovely tool tbh...solves a lot of problems.
Ignore them, they don't get the response they want, and you can continue doing what your group was doing. That's how you defend yourself with trolls, not giving them the reaction they want.
