Just voted and filled out the survey. As an Ironman, someone who has been playing since they were in 4th grade (now 30 years old) I am in a stage in life and in-game where much of what I enjoy is chill skilling. Gathering + Item creation is at the top of that list; I love me some woodcut / fletch, mine / smith / craft. I was filling everything out with high interest in the gathering and adventuring categories, that was until I saw...
ENGINEERING
as a submitted idea. It wasn't even on my radar until the last page! Now I am 1000% on board for it.
A Case for Engineering:
To contextualize, I have played a variety of other MMOs and RPGs where skills such as Engineering are involved and I believe OSRS is primed to utilize this skill better than many others. This also would fit well into the 'old school' aspect of the game, not only by pairing with existing skills, but also wouldn't need to expand new world content and could be implemented without changing much. All that would be needed is new items, quests, skill tree and maybe a Engineering guild or hub. Maybe dwarves or gnomes?
Skills that could pair for it:
-Mining (ores and gems for raw materials)
-Smithing (Would need those ores to be smithed to bars for Engineering creations)
-Farming + Herbalism (Plants or seeds for oils, glues)
-Combat (Using engineered items such as mines, bombs, flaming arrows)
-Fishing (Engineered poles or nets that could increase catch rate that runs on consumables?)
-Construction (Engineer items to be used in construction in POH)
I think the Engineering skill tree would ultimately funnel into 2 aspects:
-Pieces / Parts (Bronze wire, cogs, plating, wheels etc)
-Products (Gizmos that augment existing skills: birdhouse coocoos to increase rates, fishing pole reels to increase rates, combat items etc.)
As someone who has been playing for the majority of 20 years, primarily enjoying skilling and adventuring, I think this skill fits to just about anyone else's play style.
