I was the second person to 99 magic and the first person with 2 99 combat stats in 07rs (range and mage), so I'll offer my input:
I quit the game 2 weeks after I got my stats. I realized that it wasn't worth playing as a mage/range hybrid. The game strongly favors melee, and there's nothing that comes close to the dds for rangers/mages. It has always been this way. If GWD were to come out, especially with the same AGS and no rewards for magic/ranged skills, then 07rs would simply turn into meleescape 2.0
I eventually got melee stats in EoC because one couldn't really compete fairly otherwise, but I refused to do the same again with 07rs.
When one goes back to look at the updates that were released throughout the years, melee was always favored. For a while, there were only melee prayers, but this is only one of the many times mage/range were neglected. There was a thread titled "2005-2007 Rise and Fall of RuneScape" that highlighted the updates of RS and color coded them by the combat triangle they represented (I think you can still find a cached version on Google). Anyway, the results showed that melee received the majority of the updates, and range and especially mage received very little in comparison. The conclusion was that range should have never had its MSB spec nerfed (how Jagex devs can justify a 2x ags spec and a 4x dds spec but not a 2x msc spec is beyond me). Magic, meanwhile, should have received equal and considerable attention.
Many will say that changing the GWD rewards will deviate from the 07 nature, but one must ask themselves if they want a balanced game or not.
Absolutely perfect post.
Even what little they are willing to offer to magic (sol) still shows a melee bias by requiring ''Level 75 Attack + level 75 Magic to wield''. If the players don't support it, we end up with the very same melee favouring rubbish it was originally.
They don't appear to care about balance. At all
