Edit: THE BELOW CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS FOR ARCHAEOLOGY

At Runefest 2018 a journal from a Fremminik warrior named Fell Arnesson was shared. In this journal we find that Fell accidentally travelled into Leng from Gielinor via a cave north of Relleka while seeking to travel to the White Lands. Leng was a cold, icy, apparently uninhabited world characterized first by ice, which went on as far as the eye could see, perpetuated by massive snowstorms and blizzards in the distance. However, Fell came to find that Leng was inhabited by at least three creatures- the first two of these were a giant, glacial-sized glacors, and a repulsive slug-like creature which was easy enough to slay but (unfortunately) inedible. The third was what he described as a cloaked man whose face he couldn't make out who did not respond to any of his attempts to stop him, talk to him, or anything else- this presumably frozen wanderer simply walked in circles around the world of Leng, oblivious to all that surrounded him and all that he did.

Originally, this thread purported to argue that this man was Zaros himself, wandering aimlessly as he regained enough essence to make his way back to Freneskae. However, with a recent discovery at Kharid Et whilst training archaeology, I'd like to change gears a little bit. This one little bit of information offers what, is in my opinion, specific proof that Zaros was behind the agile-sluglike creatures, as well as the condition of the wandering man.

Firstly, the agile slug-like creatures only really match to one known creature in the RuneScape universe: Muspah. They are vile creatures created of the nightmares of Mah.

Secondly, at Kharid Et, after powering the shadow pylon, you see the spirit of a cursed Zarosian Legionary. After initially interacting with him, he gives you materials, but further interaction goes as follows: You attempt talking to him, to no response. You attempt moving your hand in front of his face to no response. Eventually, you...

Of the few in-game existing references to Leng, one comes from Zaros who reveals to Nex that he created one of the crystals which gifted her with power by fusing Elder God essence with that of a Glacor from the plane of Leng, which is from whence they originate. Zaros created four of these crystals, one each of Smoke, Ice, Blood, and Shadow and bestowed them to her so that she might gain further power and be able to fulfill her role as essentially his general. These crystals were created originally for the purpose of Zaros focusing their energy while attempting to create life, which he failed to do despite his ability to corrupt other life with certain elements to achieve distinct life.

Though this happened within the current age, long after Zaros had been re-gifted corporeal form by the adventurer and reabsorbed enough power from Muspah, we know that similar crystals existed even before and immediately after his banishment- these crystals were known as the diamonds of Azzanadra. These gemstones played a pivotal role in the quest "Desert Treasure" in which it was revealed that Azzanadra was imprisoned by Zamorakian warriors in the desert, and that they stole his gemstones which were said to bring him power. Though fifth-age folklore around the diamonds described them as being created from Azzanadra's soul, we know Azzanadra to have been one of the highest ranking members in the Zarosian church system and one of Zaros's closest allies.

I belive that sometime before his banishment, Zaros had been to the plane of Leng all these ages ago and brought with him Muspah, the foul slug-like creature described by Fell in his journal, so as to have elder god energy on hand as he sought to create crystals which would allow him to manipulate and create life. An early attempt at this led to the creation of the crystals which he then gifted to Azzanadra, the very crystals which were later used to imprison him.

After the creation of these crystals, Zaros abandoned the Muspah on the homeworld of Leng, having served their immediate purpose. Fortunately for Zaros, their role would become much larger in his life in the future.

What if after Zaros's transformation into ethereal form, he didn't aimlessly wander the multiverse? What if instead his soul was transported to somewhere evidently closer to Gielinor than Freneskae even, with a portal that allowed even humans to travel through it at random? Zaros was Leng's Wordless Wanderer. His ethereal self, inability to think or perceive, found itself there, where Fell later encountered it and found he was unable to speak and apparently unwilling or unable to acknowledge what went on around him. Here Zaros was able to absorb enough power from his previously abandoned Muspah to have the basic instinct and idea to return to his home plane of Freneskae, where he was able to regain enough power to communicate with his followers and seek help forming a new body by the adventurer in the sixth age after the end of the Edicts of Guthix.

For now the thread is open for discussion :) . This is crudely written up and has to do mostly with frantic thinking before I go to bed, so it may not read as well as I'd like nor contain all of the information which I linked to come to this conclusion. Tomorrow I'll seek to clean up any grammatical errors and add any info that might be missing.

I could agree that the wanderer is quite possibly a byproduct of Zaros' actions (intentionally or unintentionally) ... I don't think the wanderer was Zaros or an aftereffect as you described.

The issue is we just don't have enough information.

I could counter that it is possible that the wanderer is someone that is stuck between realms.
We know the "shadow realm" has been stretching for some time.
We've seen people use magics to cross into it. Other times, people just fall into it (ie: Relmonia). When they come out, they are changed.
Here, you have someone that may have partially crossed over. Just enough that they appear as a voidless entity, but still present enough that they appear physically.
The poor creature/individual may be trying to find a way out, only to just keep waling in a straight line. Who knows, from their own perspective, they may have been trapped there for mere hours or days, but in reality, thousands of years have passed.

I think the evidence is definitely there that Zaros had been here at some point before Fell’s journal- a big detail of that story which is missing is when Fell existed and when the journal was written, but we know Zaros has been there recently and I think the argument I had for Azzanadra’s diamonds is a good one too as they just don’t make any sense.

I like the idea of the entity being something Zaros did if it wasn’t actually him in ethereal form, but I also think there’s more evidence for my theory than that one. If Zaros couldn’t think or perceive, then there isn’t really any good explanation for how he ended up back at Freneskae where he was able to build himself back up- there is an argument to be made that Zaros was simply being reabsirbed into Mah, much like the mahjarrat were, but then why wasn’t he? Not like he could have done anything about it. The evidence is conjectural in nature for sure, and it makes some leaps, but evidently Leng

As a realm is close enough to Gielinor for there to be a portal which at least one person has accidentally wandered into before, and there are fierce agile-slug like creatures which basically match the description of Muspah from freneskae, a necessary elements of Zaros’s rebirth, that definitely seem out of place as being native to Leng, an icy hellscape with only one wandering entity, ice glacors, and snow.

Desert Treasure 2 could be about retrieving the Miasma Diamond (if it even exists) to further increase Azzanadra's power in preparation for Zaros' plans. Since his power ceiling has been removed after Children of Mah.

Well now i really rally on to the other three crystals here, where are they from? The Ice comes from this Leng place, but what about smoke, blood & shadow? uhuhuhu
No but i deem logics towards blood coming from the Vampyriumperiumwhatever, while smoke would have crackled from the infernal dimension and finally to shadow behind... I'll leave that aside as it seems too cloaked for this urgence.
