This theory came to me after thinking about Mah's origins:
She was the last borne of the elder gods, believed to be dead and left behind on Freneskae, and later created Zaros and Seren. Examining her egg in the Freneskae e;der halls reveals it to have been tampered with. The wounds to her body and her egg are described as ice and black stone (And Azzandra confirmed the ice did not come from Wen which only really leaves incredibly powerful ancient magicks as an option if it could hurt an elder god and wasn't done by the known elder god with ice powers).

I had always assumed Xau or Vos had come to the Elder Halls and siphoned energy from Mah while the eggs slumbered but I realized that doesn't make sense because elder gods get their energy by draining the anima at the heart of the planet so if the intruder wanted energy they just needed to consume the anima all around them and they would have gotten far more. And if the intruder was just there to kill the elder gods in egg form why only target a single egg and not destroy all of them? Also the eggs are born in order of the pattern on their shells so Mah with a pentagon shape would be the last born and weakest of the elder gods as she would have the least anima to feed on.

So logically this means Mah was targeted for some reason other than her strength or eliminating the elder gods. We have had the existence of a 6th shadowy elder god confirmed for ages now and Vos conforms to the 3 letter naming scheme of the elder gods (And Xau-Tak has two 3 letter names which is almost certainly elder god related; perhaps a sign they have been an elder god for more than one revision, or shorter names could indicate strength and they could be a lesser elder god/on their way to becoming one, or simply were named by an elder god). And that is when I realized that if shadow anima is poisonous to elder gods and we have at least one elder god on Erebus that was born/existed separate from the rest then that is probably their nature.

Meaning that I don't believe that an elder god could become shadow anima in nature if it was born like the elder gods we know of normal anima. So if Vos did not have their nature twisted to end up based in shadow anima then there are likely two types of elder gods, anima and shadow anima based. And if Vos is the last/only one (with the possible exception of Xau-Tak) and there were 5 of the other type of elder god that would make them in serious danger of extinction and if they are supposed to exist that could throw the universe out of whack without the proper balance between types of anima. So what would an extinct species want with the egg of a similar species? To make more of its kind.

So I believe what was done to Mah was an attempt to either create another elder god with shadow anima powers or one that had a balance between the two much like the way our world guardian soul contains both. Except it appears that attempt did not go as intended and the results were Mah almost dying. Our soul not exploding or turning us into an abomination despite containing shadow anima has been considered a miracle and was only capable because of the procedure being performed by Guthix who perhaps was more in tune with anima than the elder gods (he was able to sense the destruction of Forinthry and awaken meanwhile the elder gods slept on despite the damage done to the anima).

So based on what we know I believe Mah to have been a failed attempt to make a shadow anima elder god from an anima elder god egg. This theory is supported by the creation of Seren and Zaros. Seren is very clearly light based in nature and Zaros is very clearly shadow based in nature which supports Mah having both types of anima inside her. Zaros was even able to travel to Erebus which I'm presuming he wouldn't do if it would poison and kill him so if Mah created him from her own shadow anima that would explain his symbiotic nature with shadow anima.

Also there being two types of Elder Gods and the ones we know all identifying as female makes me wonder if perhaps Vos/Xau might be male. But that isn't a theory I have anything other than a hunch to support.

Also I wonder if in previous revisions the number of elder gods with anima and shadow anima natures was more balanced and those numbers have dwindled over the years. Perhaps elder gods were not even supposed to be one type or the other exclusively and were meant to be a mixture of both. Or maybe they were supposed to travel in pairs(or the anima and shadow anima teams had separate tasks that contributed to a shared goal) and elder gods with dual natured anima that is balanced like the world guardian could become an evolutionary leap in their species.

tl;dr Zaros went to visit his grandpa.

Seems interesting. Giving the hypothetical shadow anima elder gods a motive that isn't just destroying the universe and making it about finding balance between different but equally vital aspects of the world would circle back to Guthix quite nicely. Seren, Zaros, the World Guardian and the Mahjarrat all seem to suggest that coexistence between anima and shadow anima is possible and I'd personally find that preferable to a narrative where dark shadowy entities are inherently evil and need to either be converted into something else or destroyed.

It'd also tie nicely into what Seren and Zaros have going on in balancing eachother without either of them being entirely good or bad. Seren's light and empathy generally makes her more personable and appealing but it's also what led to her making questionable choices that harmed a lot of people. Zaros' more logically minded approach allowed him to create a vast and very successful empire many people thrived in but his detachment from others also caused a number of problems that eventually led to its downfall.
