~ Smoke has unmasked my companion! A small fox-like creature has been lured by the foreign scent. It had a single flame-like light burning on each of its several tails, and its eyes glowed.
My small bonfire was enough to get its attention. I reached out my hand, and called to it, and to my surprise it echoed my call. I stood and signaled to my chest and said, “Man.” My friend stared at me, its head cocked to the side…”Man!” it said back. This prompted me to test the extent of its mimicry. I pointed to the lean-to and said, “Tent!” The creature stared for a moment then called, “Tent!” I sat and observed my friend for some time, all the while teaching it new words. It was not an hour after sundown, and it disappeared back into the thick. Perhaps tomorrow, I will see my friend again.
~Today, a second small fox has returned to me with the original not to be found. I deduced quickly that the two knew of each other, as my newest visitor had snuck up behind me and started crying, “man! Man! Man!” The fur was smoother, and it seemed to carry itself better than the other, but it seemed just as interested in myself. I made up my mind to take a walk towards the nearest cliff-face. The shiny black obsidian structures had caught my attention upon my arrival, and I intended to see one in person. For now, my companion follows me, recalling words that I teach it.
