Earlier today, I was killing imps, trying to hunt down their champion scroll when a thought crossed my mind. As I'm sure most of you know, imps are demons, who are canonically shown to be sentient and able to converse with humans on their level; yet, we treat the imps essentially like cattle, skinning them and using their hides to make robes. The same thing is also applicable to dragons; while highly aggressive, they are still intelligent beings, yet we make armor from their hides.

Now, of course, one could argue that this is okay because imp and dragons are "evil" or "dangerous." And that much is true; however, there are plenty of evil and dangerous humans, gnomes, and other such races across Gielinor, yet I'm fairly certain no one would condone using their hides for armor.

So, with that, I leave you with one question: is it really ethically justifiable to skin a sentient creature and wear it?

Sounds like something that various denizens of Gielinor would have differing opinions on based off their philosophy or religion. There are probably some who would consider even human hide to be ethically justifiable to be used for crafting if it actually had useful properties. It's all kind of arbitrary. The imp is no longer conscious or aware that its body is being used to increase one's spell casting abilities, so why would anyone care? It's only a lump of material that is no longer serving as the host of a soul or consciousness.

Us runecrafters use the body of a dead god to get to the altars quicker. Is that wrong? Personally, if the hypothetical imp was quite distinguished - having achieved great things in life and gathered a reputation, I'd consider it disrespectful to use it for such ends. But even that's getting into arbitrary territory. That's just it, though, isn't it? No matter what conclusion we come to, it's all subjective. So go ahead, skin the little bugger if it proves to be useful. The only judge in this case is the thing's ability to defend itself.

One man's wrong is another man's right, and vice versa - in all possible iterations, degrees, or combinations. This is why humans are always, and will always be, at war with each other. Our minds are hard wired to base most of our decisions off emotion and subjectivity. You have different factions of world views clawing for power until one of them becomes bigger than the rest and can enforce their code. The ultimate judge is always dominance. Power is everything.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk. :D

Imps are thieves. Most of the stuff that is on them was stolen from somewhere else. We're just enacting justice.

Demonic creatures are usually considered to have a projection of themselves here, not exactly "here" persay. (Sadly, this is something that came up in a lore chat. I'm not sure if it is in game dialogue.)
Under this, the demons aren't really losing anything.

Most things respawn. You kill men, women, even you die. You see their bones (even yours). But they respawn in the same place later. Same could be said for the imps. They just keep coming back.
That or we don't know how they breed. They could be like a demonic form of Chinchompa or Kebbit (they are slightly higher up the food chain than rats). And we do have kebbit hides for use. What we could be doing is little more than a demonic form of pest control.

While we've never killed other humans for their skin (at least I don't think we have), we're certainly not above killing and just looting the poor guy's armour. In fact, the Master Quest Cape (which I take to mean canon) requires the killing of 1,300 Black Knights.

If a Black Knight and an Imp are equally Zamorakian, it's a little difficult justifying killing one, but sparing the other. Then again, a lot of Zamorak's "followers" have different "interpretations" of his words, so I guess the analogy doesn't really work.

Glad to know Bandos found a more modern method of expressing his beliefs.
The legendary creators have been long gone from this world. When they return, they'll be surprised and angered of their creations' new sapience. Meanwhile, the world's most elite, summoned to be its guardians, have abandoned their purpose and intend to plunge the world into chaos. -- Bionicle or RS?

My heresy senses are tingling.

Sympathy for demons? Please report to your nearest temple knight for flagellation.

Demons are incarnation of evil, therefore any harm befallen them are both deserved and righteous, skinning demons for their hide is probably the closest thing these wretched creature could ever hope for as a salvation, atleast their hide maybe used for someone who is good, righteous or even holy.

One can hope atleast, who knows what kind of corrupting influence it’s foul skin has on an innocent individual, by the light of Saradomin, even thinking about it makes me want to go on rampage purging every demon I see.

If the Imp or Dragon had their way, you would be their food. Why would it be unethical for me to kill them first? And if their hides allow me to survive I would skin them every time. If you think this is bad another game I play allows you to eat human flesh for sustenance, even your own. Jax Artis, the Warrior Smith

It's been quite nice reading these arguments; is anyone here willing to play devil's advocate (heh) and argue against skinning imps?

They should consider their little red hides fortunate that they only make level 10 armor.
Otherwise, we'd be hunting them for more often.

in addition, better training methods exist for low level crafting training (even for ironmen)
