Hey guys,

This Friday mods Rowley, Stu, Jack, Chaose and myself will be on livestream discussing everyone's favourite topic, Lore and Story. However, we're currently trying not to answer lore specifics or spoil specific story moments, i.e no we won't tell you where the Staff of Armadyl is. No we won't tell you how the Elder God's are going to be appeased or not appeased. No we won't tell you how all the gods ascended.

Instead, we'd like you to think about more general discussion points, things that might explain how we come to story decisions, or that give you an insight into what could have been.

So we'd like your topics.

Good Topics

* What if's - Take an event from RuneScape's past and ask us what would have happened if it played out differently. I.e what if Bandos had won world event two? What if Tuska had smashed into the planet? What if Guthix never evicted the gods with the edicts in the first place?
* How do you ... - How do we decide what quests to do? How do we decide which characters to use? Questions to understand how our minds work and how we tell stories.
* If you could .... - Questions that get to know how we operate as writers. What stories that we can't tell would we tell? What would happen if we had complete free reign of the narrative.
* Why did you ... - Sometimes it's interesting to know why a particular plot point was chosen. Why did we decide to kill a character? Why did we choose Sliske for a major villain? However see the caveat in the section below.

Note how all of the above don't spoil the existing story.

Bad Topics

* What is the future of ... - Questions asking about spoilers for upcoming content. We won't be answering these.
* Back in X quest Y says Z but then later A says B, doesn't this conflict with .... - Questions about specific lore questions, based on story hooks from past content aren't great. They're either too obscure and won't be terribly interesting to discuss, or they're something we're planning on resolving in future, in which case they're a spoiler.
* I hated X in Y quest why did you ... - Unless we can invent time travel, these sorts of questions aren't really satisfying for anyone to answer and the answer given rarely satisfies the asker. Also note if anyone one of us had access to time travel we would all be living in some nightmare distopia with us as the god kinds of everything. Yes, even Stu.

So with these guidelines please post your questions in this thread. We'll collate a few of them and ask them at the stream.

Discussion point/question:
How do you go about creating compelling & engaging stories when substantially raising the narrative stakes (e.g. The Elder Gods potentially destroying everything & moving to the next universe cycle), without breaking player immersion thanks to the gameplay implications of RuneScape being a persistent, online game, leading to the 4th wall being broken as the player knows their character & game world will be relatively “safe” from harm in order for the game to continue being playable.

Who most commonly contributes corny dialogue and puns to quests?

Do you have an example of a quest, where the ending diverted wildly from what was originally planned and what were the reasons behind the change?

What is the thought process when deciding how difficult a boss fight in a quest should be? Will we ever have a boss fight as difficult as Araxxor or Telos?

Could a character use divination energy to ascend?

What if V had survived? Would he have been able to call the other "hero gods" to Gielinor? Would the bandosians join him as willingly as he anticipated?

If you could have one character ascend who would it be?

If you had unlimited resources what quest/quest series/lore thing would you make?

If you could remake any quest, either an old one you weren't around for or a more recent one you'd like to flip the concept for which one would you redo?

If you could get rid of one character from the lore who would it be?

If you could rework any quest in the game, which one would it be?

Now that two and a half are dead, how do you think the Signature Heroes turned out? What would you do differently if you were to introduce them today?
-
I have noticed your kind does tend to blindly stumble forward towards danger simply because it exists. What is your word for that?
- We call it being a hero.

Not so serious questions:

Prior to the Salve barrier weakening, if you got a vampyre juvinate, put them in a catapult and tried to fire them over the river, what would happen? Would they hit an invisible wall and fall back to earth, die, make it through and be incredibly weakened?

Is the fact you can breed and raise dragons on a farm meant to be taken seriously?

If you got a transformed werewolf, shaved off all their fur, then they transformed back, would their human form still have hair (Provided their human form wasn't bald)

How come every Christmas, the world guardian has to work for his present?

Do all female Aviansie, like Famine, have breasts?

What would Saradomin, Armadyl, and Zamorak have done to kill/finish off Tuska (instead of Vorago)?

What would have happened if the Lumbridge Cook was actually good at his job and didn't need the player's help to make the cake?

Why do we have to kill the Wild Kebbit in the Eagle's Peak quest? Why could we use a hunter method to trap/snare it? What was going thru it's mind as it died? Why was it even there in teh first place?

What if the world of Gielinor discovered sugar? Would it have made baking cakes a lot better?

What would the world be like if chinchomapas weren't explosive breeders?

If you could rewrite the Knights of the Round Table quest line, would you completely change the narrative? or would you keep most of what's there but make Arthur and his knights (and the Renegades) from Saradomin's homeworld?

Versus matchups: who would win the following matchups?
- ghost vs skeleton vs zombie?
- bunny vs chicken?
- Evil Dave's Mom vs the Lumbridge Chef in a cookoff?
- Wise Old Man vs Mysterious Old Man vs Odd Old Man vs Strange Old Man in an old man competition?

1. One regarding Needle Skips. One thing that I enjoyed about the quest was how it fit into the world. There are references to sea trolls and the nearby gnomes, appearances by Hannibus and Thok (though as a very different characters), and a reference to the Elder Gods in the form of the pause word, Wenla. These are all references to other portions of the world that make sense within the quest, but attention is not called to them and you do not need to understand the references in order to play and enjoy the quest.

Is this the sort of storytelling you plan on doing more of, in lieu of quests with many requirements?

2. This is more of a meta question than a direct lore question, but still relevant to quests.

The Needle Skips was the first voiced quest in many years. Given the nature of how the quest works and the role dialogue plays, I can see why this was done.
So what exactly is the current policy on voicing quests? Is it done on a case-by-case basis? Does the quest need special justification/few characters for you to do it now? Or was this just a one off/rare thing and we should not expect more voiced quests in the future?
