The title is an over generalization. But it holds truth.

At the end of any conflict, the price is high. Often making anyone wonder if such a concept of "victory" has any meaning.
But at the root of a conflict, one or more sides have an objective. And in the end, one or more sides will achieve their objective. And others will not obtain theirs.

In the Runescape Godwars of the 6th Age, many factions emerged. Each with their own agendas.

Listed below is a rough summary:

The Godless

The militant faction under Kara Meir wanted the gods to be killed off or to leave the world.

Many within the faction would have accepted a peaceful coexistence, but not wanting gods meddling in their affairs.

Saradominists
With the return of Saradomin, the faction sought to bring order to the land and to continue to eliminate the historical rivals of Saradomin: Zamorakians and Zarosians.
All with Saradomin seeing himself as the one true king of Gielinor and the one to bring his vision of order.

Zarosians
Zaros himself had 1 goal: to achieve elder godhood.
The remnants of his followers sought to aid Zaros in any way possible.
They also sought to oppose Zamorakians in any way.

Sliske
The newest "faction".
Sliske himself was bored. He wanted change. He wanted mayhem. He wanted entertainment.
Any that followed him sought the same.
But unlike any other faction, Sliske had little to no interest in his "followers" or "faction".

Zamorakians
Strength through chaos. But many followers of the tenet tended to take a rather warped or extreme view of it.
Zamorakians had not changed in ages. Their primary motivations were to bring about a world of chaos and change. They would oppose Saradomin and Zaros at any oppurtunity.

Bandosians
Might makes right.
The goal was war. The goal was to prove themselves. The goal was to prove their way was right.

Serenists
Thru the phase of the initial god war, their was no goal as Seren herself was still shattered. Only after she was reformed, did the elves take some sort of role. Often merely to oppose Sliske, Zamorak, and Zaros.
The Cywir Clan was active in 1 battle for the hope to release the elves from their attunement to Seren.
Seren's personal goals changed with the Elder Gods appeared.

V
A short term player in events. Shared some philosophy with Guthix and the Godless that gods have no part to play in Gielinor. Unlike Guthix was in the past, he was prepared to go to war to evict the other gods.

Armadyl
Another agent of order, but preferred the "gods to let mortals do their own thing" and gods being more of a committee of advisors to mortals rather than direct leaders.
Historically one of the ones preferring peace, but also often called a hypocrite.

The Elder Gods
Creators of the universe. Life is seen as an accident.
Each elder god had their own view of mortals. Jas was the only one to be ... curious ... and let mortals test themselves.
Once the eggs were in danger though, the Elder Gods declared war on all life on Gielinor.

In short:
- lots of fighting, death destruction
- several gods die (V, Tuska, Bandos, Sliske)
- several Elder Artifacts are destroyed (Needle, Stone) or lost (Siphon) or repurposed (the measure)
- Seren, Bik, Wen, and Ful are on the dead remains of Iaia
- Jas and Zaros are "gone" (future fate TBD)
- Azzanadra ascended and had to leave
- Zamorak, Saradomin, and Aramdyl had to leave
- World Guardian powers were created and lost

Victory can sometimes be determined by who got what their objectives in the end.

In reality ........ only the Godless truly got what they wanted.
- Elder Gods AND their eggs are gone
- all gods, excluding Brassica and the Desert Pantheon, are gone
- V, Tuska, Bandos, and the one who started it all Sliske are all dead

True, Bandosians like to fight. They got to fight a lot. Their mantra of might makes right was proven when Armadyl defeated Bandos. But they lost Bandos. They lost a lot of their followers. Several times, their faction was forced to rethink what exactly their own mantra meant (see The Mighty Fall).

Seren, personally got what she always wanted. A family. She loved her elves dearly, but she abandoned them for the Elder Gods. She was willingly left the Elves to a potentially horrible fate (just look at what happened to the elves on their homeworld).

Zaros sought to become an Elder God and failed to have it happen. The Zarosians as a faction are now led by Azzanadra and took solace in they helped to scuttle Zamorak's plans.

Saradomin sought to lead Gielinor into a new age as its new high king. He had to settle for Zamorak being humiliated and his adopted daughter becoming Bascilica (empress) of the Saradominst regions.

Armadyl got his "council of gods" but had to go through Infernus and back twice to get it. Had to see more people die than he would have liked.

Zamorak is the biggest loser out of the entire chain of events. Lost to Saradomin. Regained his power. Gained more power siphoning the Elder Gods Eggs. And then even more power from the eye of Het. And on the cusp of final victory, only to get kicked out of Gielinor and the Edicts barrier returned. His only consolation prize was Moia becoming the new leader of the Zamorakian faction.

Many of the factions had to make compromises to achieve ... something.

Saradominists ended up with a return to the status quo, but are left in a painfully weakened state.

The Dragonkin could be said to be even bigger winners out of all of this. Afterall, they gained their independence from the chain of events with the destruction of the Stone of Jas. Kerapac did try to kill the Elder God eggs (and in turn the Elder Gods), and ended up getting some of his Dragonkin re-enslaved to the Elder Gods. They had to fight ... again ... and again ... they regained their freedom. And, Anachronia is there again to give them some sort of home. (Hard to say if any faction suffered more.)

For many factions, the were also defined by the god they followed. Their gods walked among them again. Now, many of those gods are gone or dead. The lives of their followers must return to knowing that their gods can never come back.

Only those that sought to free the world from the influence of the gods got what they wanted.
